A bit more digging and I came up with the following:
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Alienware On-Screen Display\SwitchGPU.exe
--- running this provides the same functionality as the Fn-F7 keypress
So, now that only the 7970m shows up in Win 8.0 Device Manager and GPUz, I have a followup question for those that might know. Are there any critical differences between disabling the iGPU this way and through an unlocked BIOS?

Laptop: M17x R4
dGPU: stock 7970m
CCC: 14
Bios: stock A12
Currently the fn-F7 does not bring up the reboot screen. To the best of my knowledge is does nothing at all.
Other osd functions appear to work fine. Latest osd version is installed.
Is there a command line equivalent? What exactly does the Fn-F7 routine do? Does it reset a BIOS switch otherwise hidden, set a driver flag, test user anger management, or something else entirely? Thanks.

I've heard, but have no personal experience, that the charger sends a data signal to the laptop to confirm capabilities and authenticity.

Hi,
I'm looking to build a system for use in a mobile office setting. Vehicle is relatively typical diesel engine with a 12 volt system. We do have a true sine inverter, but would rather power directly from 12 volt if possible and avoid the conversion inefficiency.
System usage is typical of a video / cad station with 2 to 3 monitors.
The system will be used both when the vehicle is at rest and in motion.
I'm looking for general suggestions, and specifically ones with regard to case and power supply.

I have had little but trouble with the 7970m from when it arrived and am looking for a upgrade GPU.
The main reason I went with the 7970m was the ability to operate 3 screens (built in, HDMI, mp) -- which it did.
The main reason I am displeased with the 7970m is the lousy driver updates, frequent crashes, and errant pixles.
I'd appreciate suggestions for another card, ideally that can still natively handle 3 screens.
Bypassing iGPU on M17x R4 - Method Differences (Fn-F7 vs. Bios)
in Alienware M17x / AW 17

I believe that Fn-F7 simply triggers: %ProgramFiles(x86)%Alienware On-Screen DisplaySwitchGPU.exe
What are the pros/cons/functional differences between these two methods of bypassing the iGPU?
Some obvious ones:
