After hovering for hours around the forum, I realized that there can only be one compact, elegant and efficient solution:
A thunderbolt to MXM adaptor. Here's why:
1) Size: you could easily have an external MXM board with you. It's sized almost like a 2.5'' HDD.
2) Efficiency: an MXM implementation sips WAY less power than a full sized PCIe card.
3) And finally, there are quite a few REALLY powerful MXM GPUS right now.
Now, if only someone could make such an adapter...

Indeed, only 10W are provided, but still, even the best MXM boards use up to 100W, just a fraction compared to similar desktop parts.
However, the biggest problem for now seems to be compatibility; MXM boards have too little (see: expensive) market segment to be developed in bulk and according to strict specifications. Only yesterday I received this e-mail from HWtools:
"I got several inquiries about MXM.
However, because there are many issues of MXM in mechanism and compatibility that will take us a lot of time to overcome.
So far we don’t have any plan for developing."
