Babbler I have exactly the same problem with the adapter so I'll try to fit it into additional ultrabay 750/755m chassis. I'm currently looking for broken card but if I can't find it ill use my working one and post the results.

I never thought about that. That's a good idea. It be great if it sat more firmly and it could be easily inserted and removed. I wonder if an hard drive ultrabay caddy might work.

  2. My adapter isn't under pressure or stress from anything, it just doesn't seat well.  I wish it seated better but the only reason it's annoying for me is that my girlfriend broke her monitor so she's been using mine and I've been disconnecting and reconnecting it to the egpu over the last couple of days. Once she gets another monitor/hdmi cable it's a non-issue since it's not going to happen very often that I'm fiddling with it or moving things while it's running.

I kind of managed to fit everything on my desk though cable management is a bit of a nightmare at the moment especially because of the non-modular psu (please excuse the image quality I took it with a potato).

The only problem I'm having right now with regards to the egpu setup -other than needing a bigger desk- is that the adapter won't seat very well in the connector at all so if I move anything I get an hard lock and have to reboot. Taking that picture I tried to see if I could move that cord that is sticking up behind the gpu into a different position and it was enough of a jostle to lock my computer up. I have the adapter pushed in as far as it will go.

Hi Babbler I've bought modular fanless XFX XTS, coupled with Radon Fury X fan, it fits quite well behind my 27" monitor. Unfortunately I think there is small chance that someone will find a method to send signal from eGPU to the laptop screen :( my wild guess is it should be possible with bios and drivers modding but there's not enough demand for that so no one's digging, its the same situation as with Nvidia Cards - it should be possible to unlock them as Lenovo showed with newer bioses  (which have AMD cards also blocked) that its software not hardware block but I guess its too much work for such small demand. So for now we are condemned to using external monitors only. But if we could build up solid community around this eGPU and collect enough money then we would probably be able to find someone advanced enough to help us with those problems.

Unfortunately Gerlad makes those adapters just as a side job or even for fun and he neither plan to expand production nor want to improve them so its not very likely.

I don't need the egpu going to my laptop screen. I game on my monitor connected to the egpu and use the laptop screen as a secondary monitor. I've already done some streaming with a game running on my monitor and using the laptop screen for obs and chat and that's worked perfectly fine.

yeah, need a controller for it but yeah essentially.

Then that way you can move the laptop off the desk

I like having a intact laptop that I can move in 5 minutes if I wanted to so I probably won't be dissembling it.

If I recall correctly, you can still use the panel from the panel and onboard GPU but if you move a window or application from the panel to the external monitor computer will crash. I believe this was mentioned earlier on in the thread. If this is the case then while at the desk the panel is useless. With my scenario the panel is already useless to begin with. I dont waste components that are easily put to use. So, remove the panel altogether and make it a usable panel, been done for sometime and specifically with laptop panels too since they are dirt cheap.

I can drag applications from one screen to another and it works.  I'm constantly doing it with chrome tabs and other programs. Just then to make sure it worked with something beefier, I started a game in windowed mode, dragged it over to my laptop screen, and it ran perfectly fine.

best method is to probably make a stand for the panel of the laptop and connect to the GPU itself.

You mean disassemble my laptop and connect the gpu directly to the laptop screen?

I couuld have that completely ass up.

  6. How does everyone have their adapter setup?

I do a lot of streaming so I want to see my monitor as well as my laptop screen for chat and obs and my desk is neither long enough nor wide enough for a setup like that. My laptop with the psu besides it takes up quite a bit of room.  I either have my monitor at an awkward angle and have to turn my neck to see it or I can't fit my mouse and keyboard on my desk...so annoying.

I really wish I bought a modular psu so I wouldn't have that mess of wires to deal with as well;  I actually think I got bait and switched since I swear the listing said modular when I bought it.

Dont forget though you will also likely need a keyboard, and monitor as well.

Not trying to undermine your point but just better to have full context :)

Anything if a decent gpu in it is pretty close to double -if you don't go crazy with the monitor and keyboard- what the adapter and accessories would cost....here in Canada at least.

Ok finally I seem to have a "quality post" to add - and if I'm not mistaking it will be a blast - it looks like Gerald egpu adapter work with windows 8.1 - at least with Radeon Fury X :frantics: right now I'm putting 3dmark 11 through it and it looks good - my setup is not tweaked I haven't even put throttlestop on it but it definitely works - http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/12096638 and it do gooo :hyper:

It's good to hear you got it working with Win 8.1 I was worried I'd have to finally make the change to Win 10.

:Blabber if you can show me a brand new laptop with 1070 gpu for less then 1600$ or used one under 1000$ in Europa then You just might be right ;)  - in Poland you could buy new y510p for less then 700$ Radeon fury x is a bit different story and it cost about the same as the whole Laptop so we have another 700 - in total 700+700+100 for setup+ adapter and another 150 for PSU ( but only if you want it silent, if not you can buy one for less than 40$). Unfortunately electronics in Europa are much more expensive then in USA but ... I haven't bought those components new so I've landed below 1000$ total - price  in which you cant buy anything more than used laptop with gtx1060, at least in Europe.

What's more I have lightweight functional quasi business/work laptop with really strong CPU and in conjunction with eGPU this have the power comparable to desktop gaming rig when I want to - I don't have to carry 4kg DTR, and double 755 are on par with 960m so they are enough for mobile laptop gaming. on the other hand I don't need a big desktop rig sitting in my room either - all I have are laptop + adapter with card and psu.

You both can believe me when i say I have a full context - I also have gt70 with gtx 980m and I was looking for good replacement for it whole last year - new laptops with gtx1070 start from about 7000 pln which is around 1800$ and used ones aren't much cheaper, its still quite new hardware, not to mention those "cheapest" constructions are simply really bad - overheating, loud, mediocre build-  good ones start from about 2000$.

What? I wasn't arguing it was cheaper. Electronic prices in Canada are expensive too so there's no way you're getting a decent laptop with anywhere near the price of the adapter and accessories.

In unlocked BIOS, yes, you can change all TDP values :) at least to 147w or someting like that where it becomes non-issue. But guys, anyway, if you consider buying high-end gpu and this adapter, also please consider that lenovo and others now put 1060/1070/1080 desktop versions into laptops. You might save some additional money and just buy new laptop alltogether. And from pure science/tinkering perspective, if you have some left-over gpu, it would be nice to have schematics of this adapter, maybe remove ultrabay connector and make this adapter ourselves.

Buying an adapter +psu+ gpu is definitely not cheaper than buying a brand new laptop even if you buy all the parts brand new.

Edit: That "not" shouldn't be there.

Yeah but a couple pages back people were having issues with 480s not booting because it draws too much power from the pci

Yeah, I see what you mean. Amd did update their drivers though to draw less power from the pci-e.

Was just informed that my package is already at my local post office to be picked up. So will be picking it up tomorrow morning. Will post an update here about the package. :D I'm so excited for this. I'm from the Philippines if that helps. :)

Lucky. I have my psu and gpu ready to go but it just arrived in Canada today.

It annoys me that anything coming from Europe has to pass over where I live, go 3000 km to Central Canada for processing, and then 3000 km back this way to get to me.

Hi! Is this item going to be available anytime soon? I'm willing to buy one in a heartbeat. I just discovered it now and now it's sold out. I do hope you make a new batch so I can get one for myself. Awesome invention there sir. :D

If you were a day or so quicker you could have ordered one.  You'll have to check with Gerald if there will be another batch but the last one was up for a month and barely got filled.

PLEASE! NEED HELP. I have this exact problem and still have no idea what to do. I plugged everything in correctly, downloaded the drivers needed for my graphics card through "Geforce Experience" restarted my laptop and now it shows (Code 12) in device manager. Is there a driver that is also located in the PCI bus 1 that I need to disable? I don't want to disable or uninstall the wrong thing and Idk what it is I have to do. Running on a i5 HP Pavilion dm4 and my graphics card is a Geforce 8800 Gts. Would VERY MUCH appreciate any guidance and help. I've been looking everywhere! And no luck :logik:

I don't mean to be rude but this tread is about the the y510p/y410p ultrabay graphics card not the Hp Pavillion and geforce 8800 gts.

I'm using an rx 470 with a 600W antec psu(gold rated too) and it is running like a dream. I play games for long sessions (4-5 hours) on daily basis. and I haven't experienced any major driver crashes like yours.

What version of the rx 470 did you get? Any particular reason for choosing that card.

Not being critical of your choice or anything, I'm trying to choose a gpu and I'm just curious. I haven't gotten an adapter yet so this is putting the cart before the horse a bit.
