I see someone else say not to use a riser cable... Is this the issue?  I'd have to bend my akito thunder case to plug in directly, should I do that?

I have also heard this many times now but nobody can give me a reason why. I am having problems with stability with my eGPU, constant crashes now while eGPU is running and using Cinema 4D or rendering with Octane. Basically if the eGPU is on, I am working very nervously. I can't pin point if my problem is my eGPU hardware or conflict with my iMac. I am at a point where I am thinking about abandoning this DIY eGPU and just going with a Bizon box. I just can't get any straight answer around the forum here, and every time someone redirects me to the "right topic" on another forum for trouble shooting I run into broken links and dead ends. I'm also not a gamer, so that doesn't help me either.

  2. So, I have been running my eGPU for about two weeks now, with about a 95% success! That means for me, minimal problems and successful rendering with Octane render engine. I have had some crashes, about once a day but it hasn't been a huge problem, its usually with the first start up of the eGPU in the morning. Having said all that, today has been different, not only is it unusually hot here in Berlin but I am getting constant crashes when the eGPU is on. The crashes happen when rendering or just randomly when working in Cinema 4D, my computer freezes and then reboots from the "multi language" Apple screen. Remember, this only happens when the eGPU is on, otherwise my computer is running fine. I provided the Panic Report below, its all 'Chinese' to me, maybe someone is better at reading it.

My eGPU unit is sitting on my desk "ghetto style," while I wait for some parts to start building a enclosure for the components. Could that be causing stability issues?

    Thanks in advance!

  3. Hopefully this is a simply question with a simple answer.

Ive looked around on the forums regarding my issue but not finding an answer. Basically, I ran the install script successfully, I noticed that when the script was running in Terminal that it even detected the eGPU but after the script ran successfully and I restarted my computer there is no detection of the eGPU in Nvidia driver manager or in the system report. Sooooo what could I be missing? It seems that all hardware is up and running, all fans spinning.

Is there any other way of avoiding the paperclip trick? I have a be quiet! DARK POWER PRO 750W PSU and all the wires/cables are black. This is all very confusing because it seems that I have seen other people online set all of this up without any 'tricks,' for example in this video, seems to be no paperclip tricks. It seems the PSU powers through the molex connection.

  5. Hello,

I ran the script and i get this message "Thunderbolt device is connected, but no external GPUs detected." I am pretty sure its a hardware issue but I am not exactly sure what.

When I use the PSU(750W) to power the GPU GTX 980 ti and the pcie riser through the molex I get nothing, no fans spinning or anything. When I use the Akitio power supply everything starts spinning and lighting up but still no GPU detected.

    Any ideas anyone?

  6. Complete noob when it comes to running this script, so, I would really appreciate some easy guidance here.

I am running OS 10.11.5 on a iMac(27-inch, Late 2012) and I am ready to run the goalque script but before I do so, I just want to make sure I do things in the right order to prevent bigger problems.

According to http://osxdaily.com/2015/10/05/disable-rootless-system-integrity-protection-mac-os-x/ I need to disable System Integrity Protection first, correct? or no?

From what I understand the goalque script should detect OS X product and build, and automatically download and install correct Nvidia web driver, sounds great! Should I uninstall old drivers?

So, download goalgue to desktop, open up Terminal and then execute the commands below?

    chmod +x automate-eGPU.sh
    sudo ./automate-eGPU.sh

    and thats it?

Oh and I found this video very helpful but I am unsure what exactly is outdated in it. What instructions to follow and what to throw out.

If I applied your logic to the GTX 750 or any lower-end card, then it would imply that those cards require 0W to function since they have no power connectors.

Thanks for your reply. I wasn't trying to "apply any logic," I am just trying to understand how this all works. You have to understand, I am a software person, not a hardware person. This is all new to me and I am just trying to make good decisions and understand why those decisions are good.

I have never built a PC or ever connected PCI cables to anything before. I have always bought Apple computers, plugged them in to the wall and started with my work.

  8. Hello,

About to set up my first eGPU but before I do so I have a couple questions.

I have been following the eGPU forums for a couple weeks now and I decided to take the dive and build one myself.

A little bit about me, I am a professional digital artist and I am starting to use the Octane render engine but I need more GPU power to do so. I am not a gamer, the eGPU is solely for rendering.

This is what I currently have for my work computer:

    iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)

Processor 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5

    Memory 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1024 MB

As you can see, pretty weak graphics, especially for using a GPU renderer like Octane.

This is what I have currently sitting on my desk still shrink wrapped in boxes for my eGPU build:

    Apple Thunderbolt Cable 2.0m

    EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Ti 6GB GDDR5

be quiet! DARK POWER PRO 11 750W PSU

    Akitio Thunderbolt2 PCIe Expansion Box

    Powered Riser Cable 16X PCI-E

    1. Question: Is there anything I am missing as far as hardware?

    2. Question: As far as I understand, my GTX 980 Ti has a 8 pin (max150W) and a 6 pin (max 75W), which if I utilize both pin sets would get me to 225W correct? But doesn't the graphic card need 250W to run at full speed? Is this a dumb question?

    3. Question: Would any of you have done this differently with the hardware?

I really appreciate any input, suggestions or constructive criticism. This is all new to me.

    Thanks in advance!!
