  1. I just got a 980m and got the Prema V2 vbios installed and everything is working great.  I was playing Division and my temps started to creep up a bit.  I was at 90c and the fan was barely going so I installed HWinfo and got the temps under control. With the fan running with hwinfo the temps got back down to 75-80c. I imaging thermal paste needs some settle time as well. I just got it running yesterday.

I was just wondering what the max RPM for the gpu fan is?  I've been using 5000 rpm as a top and it rarely gets going that fast but I don't want to wreck something either.

Recommendations for custom GPU fan speeds?

Update: I dug out my old CoolerMaster laptop cooler.  It has three fans powered by a usb port and pushes right into the three fan ports on the bottom of the laptop.  It's dropped the in use temp down to 70c. These cheesy laptop coolers do make a difference.

  2. BREAKTHROUGH!

I had the wrong Section number.

    When I put in %NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0550.1028% = Section227, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05501028

I used the section from a different card not the 13d7.

The section should be 115 116 0r 117. I just entered all three.

    %NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0550.1028% = Section115, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05501028

    %NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0550.1028% = Section116, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05501028

    %NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0550.1028% = Section117, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05501028

    and the driver installed.

Now to see how well it does on some Division.

When installing, select option to custom install. Then just install the driver and the phsyx or whatever. see if that works. I never install the geforce bloatware or the hd driver thingy

I'm trying to install 368.38.  I''ve deleted everything from the install package but the folders specified.  The option don't show physx.  Just hd audio and driver.

The hd audio driver never gets a chance to try to install. The display driver fails and the install process stops.

If I only check display driver it does the same thing.

  4. I still don't have download rights so I tried to edit the driver myself.

Im on an Alienware m18x r2.

I'm on stock bios A12. I'm on windows 10 home on uefi with secure boot turned off.

CPU Z sees the card fine and the fan is running.

    Following the guide at http://null-bin.blogspot.ca/2015/08/how-to-modify-nvidia-notebook-driver.html

    I edited the nvdmi.inf for dell/alienware

    My hardware id is:

    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05501028&REV_A1

    So i put

     %NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0550.1028% = Section227, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05501028

in the right place and added

    NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0550.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M"

    to the [strings] section

    I turned off driver signing.

Deleted all the folders except the ones listed in this post.

    Ran setup as admin.

The red unsigned driver windows popped up and I said install anyway.

Then almost immediately the install fails.  It says HD Audio not installed and driver install failed.

Can someone please help me please.

I just upgraded to win 10 using J95's modded drivers.  These ones to be exact.  GeForce 364.72 Win10  and  nv_dispi.inf_v364.72_Win10_PEG_Dedicated.zip

The way I did it was:

-Uninstall gpu drivers via device manager and disabled

    -flashed prema v2 bios

    -upgraded via windows update

    -installed  GeForce 364.72 Win10  and  nv_dispi.inf_v364.72_Win10_PEG_Dedicated.zip

You can find detailed instructions from J95 here (last post):

    https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/4906-alienware-aftermarket-upgrades-driver-support-modded-inf/&page=46

Everything worked great at that point, but I wanted to start with a clean install, so I went ahead and formatted via USB win10 installation.

Installed all the drivers from the Dell support site for win8.1 and  reinstalled GPU drivers mentioned above.

I've played a few games for 20+ minutes and have 0 throttling.

    Hope it works for you!

    Specs:

    Alienware M18x R2

    GPU: 980m SLI

    CPU: 3920xm

    RAM: 32gb

    SSD: Sandisk Extreme Pro

Thanks for the info.  I need to get my posts up to download the inf file and use my new gpu.
