Honestly, for me, I'm still a 100% linux guy. I'm just always on the look for open-sourced software, etc. Plus I'm more old school, and prefer the command line over everything else.
-
Pretty much, yes. I thought I fixed it, but the webcam and microphones still aren't detected. You think I should try a different version of the bios?
-
Heh... Yup, sounds like windows... LOL! Nothing personal against windows, but for me, linux is where it's at.
-
No worries bro! xD...
Hey, can I send you a private message in regards to my M14x?
-
Being a *nix user, how is windows 8 overall? I mean, what are the best and worst features?
-
Was anything in general really.... Bios flasher/utilities, etc
-
Im pretty old school.
Wow... That was interesting.

Hey dell, corp here. Just wondering if you guys have any open-source tools or utilities that you use, yet we wouldn't know about. Not sure if this should be here, but I have the M14x. Also, linux user here, so as well.... Any "official" linux support from Dell yet?
Cheers,

Well, makes two of us then. Running linux on my end, and had the same thing happen. Webcam, and the dual array microphones, randomly shit out a few days ago. Last time this happened, I used my old motherboard, and swapped. (I had to reflash it in order to get it working again.) Now, knowing that.... This time around, reflashing the BIOS manually did not work. Kind of sad now, since I'm moving really soon, and would like to have these features working, as I will be traveling for a small bit. Please note, I used the latest A08 unlocked BIOS, and still no go. I'm about to resort to a hammer, and cross Dell off of my list. Dell, I was counting on you to make something that worked, and you have failed me again.
PS - If any of the Dell reps see this, could you do some research for me? I really would like to fix this, instead of smashing everything but the hard drive, and switching to something else, ie System 76.....
-
EDIT: I came off way more rude than I thought. Was just a joke.... Oops!
Anywho.... Yeah, VBIOS is different
-
It does fit in the chassis but the price for the motherboard would be pretty much the same as buying a new R2.
Ehh, ok. I guess I'm not upgrading for a while then LOL

Ok, I really like you know.
On a side note... I have my 30 GB collection of metal and death metal on random. Rock on! \m/ >.< \m/
-
Well yes, I know that I mean, is it possible to upgrade? I narrowed down an issue I have been having to the motherboard, and since I need (another) new one, I figured why not try to upgrade?
-
The 650m is available in USA and it is DDR5.
How difficult would it be to get Dell to send me a new motherboard with the 650M instead of the 555M that mine currently has?
-
Did this mod for a buddy of mine a while back..... I see other people are doing this as well, awesome! I didn't even bother to search and see if someone did this at the time, but I winged it in less than 10 minutes with this mod. Quick and simple
-
New guy on the forms here.... I have the M14xR1, running Fedora 17 64 bit. Wasn't sure where to post, but I'm a linux user/dev, so if anyone needs help/assistance with anything linux related, let me know!
Over and out,
Josh

The challenge phoenix is that any bios besides A01 puts your (GPU speed) into a mobile mode and it severely downclocks it. What you can "try" to do is to see if the unlocked A08 allows you to manually clock the GPU on battery mode to something like 400/800/800.. Which is a more sensible clock speed on battery. I wish you the best of luck. the newer models of the m14x will not be able to utilize the older bios (example A01 or A03). Best wishes, StevenX
I confirm your theory; Using the A08 modified bios, and I can have the BIOS hold values by setting it manually. Just be careful while you are gaming/etc on just battery with something like this set, as your battery will drain faster; Hence, why this feature exists.

I've just installed 16Gb Vengance at 1600Mhz.. So far so good!
Can I ask what BIOS you are using?
-
I have the R1, during game it usually reaches 88-94 degree depends on what kind of game. The rest of time, ususally around 75.
Same here.... I have around the same temps with the 555M, modified and updated A08 bios.
is alienware m14x worth buying or not?
