I have a Mac Mini (Late 2012) connected to an RX480 via Thunderbolt, and since installing 10.3.1 Beta 2 I no longer have a black screen on restart, and also don't need to have the monitor plugged into the internal HDMI to reboot successfully without issues. It just works. Wahoo!

Picked up an MSI AMD Radeon RX 470 Gaming X 8GB.
Seems to have solved the issue.

OK, seeing some R9 2xx related crashes and similar issues from others with this setup.
What is a good, hassle-free, card to replace it with?
Would a GTX1060 or RX480, be the better plug-n-play solution (if the extra power needs are already sorted)? This is for use with MacOS 10.2.3+.

Hi all,
Currently running a Mac mini (Late 2012), 16GB RAM, with an Akitio Thunder2, Asus R9 270 Overclocked 2GB GDDR5 DirectCU-II Cooler, powered by an EVGA 500W power supply.
OS is currently 10.12.x, but I have seen this issue with 10.9.x through 10.12.x.
Generally, it runs great. It's fast and works well. Until it doesn't.
After a random period of time (15 mins to 15 hours), things get all stuttery, gradually worsening until it eventually reboots the system.
This does not ever happen when using the built-in GPU, only when using the eGPU.
Could this be an issue with using an AMD card rather than a Nvidia card? Would a GTX likely remove this issue?
Are others seeing this, and is there a fix?
In terms of troubleshooting, it doesn't log anything when this happens.
Any ideas? Thanks!

ATI Blackscreen Issue Fixed in 10.3.1 Beta 2?

There is still some weirdness. Sometimes I get the black screen, sometimes when it goes to sleep the monitor doesn't come back on, and the computer needs to be restarted to get it to work. But all-in-all, it works 95% of the time now (10.13.1 Beta 5 now), getting really good speed, and workflow is much improved.
Lightroom & Photoshop now also correctly identify and work with the external RX480, but I'm not sure whether that's from the latest Lr & Ps updates, or from the OS changes.
