  1. Hey guys! I hope that you're all doing well!

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but does Setup 1.30 work on Ubuntu? Because I'm sort of getting screwed on some TOLUD issues within the OS (But with Windows 8.1, it works fine.) I have Ubuntu running on a separate HDD if that helps.

@Beer How do you do that? I'm stuck at step 4 & 5, unsure what to do.

Hey sorry for the late reply. In order to drop the files in the .img, you have to open up the .img with PowerISO (7zip didn't work for me) and add the files from there. As for step 5, you have two ways of editing it. You can either extract startup.bat and add your pt MEM script with Notepad or edit it directly in Setup 1.30

    I hope that helps!

Hey everyone, following the steps in the video I make it near the end without any errors but for some reason I am unable to load the new DSDT file. I'm not sure what is wrong but have attached a pic to show the log and file location. Hopefully someone in here can figure out what I'm doing wrong?

Yeah, for some reason, the video just ends. Are you running Windows 10? You're honestly better off using Setup 1.30 to preload you DSDT file from there. It saved me a lot of heartache

  4. Hi everyone! I complied my DSDT override with no errors! I'm doing the Windows 8 method of preloading the override through Setup 1.30 and I'm a little stuck. I compared both my original and my new .aml files, and does the new one have to be smaller? Because it's currently the same size as my original. If so, how would I go about deleting the _OSI entries?

Edit: Never mind, I figured it out haha. Managed to reduce the new .aml file down by .1 kb Though is it important to fix the warnings while I'm at it?

Edit 2: I did it :D Didn't get botched or anything like that. Did the rest with Setup 1.30 and it was smooth sailing from there. I'm a happy camper!

  5. Update: Got my Optimus drivers to work :D and it turns out I have to do a DSDT override. I've been stuck with Error 12 for a while, so I took out a stick of RAM and lo and behold, the internal display worked. I'll keep everyone posted when I do the override and/or if something horrible goes wrong haha

Edit 2: My override went smoothly! Got my internal display working! You guys are all awesome <3

  6. Hey guys! It's been a while. I finally got my eGPU running, but I cannot get it to use the internal display for the life of me. I am using the nVidia 306.97 drivers and I have Setup 1.30, but I'm kind of at a loss on what to do with it aside from whitelisting. I've been also getting Error 12, so maybe that's why the iGPU and the eGPU aren't playing nice with each other? My TOLUD I believe is 2.75GB so I'm not quite sure why it's being fussy. Maybe I should use PCI-compression on Setup 1.30?

    Just to make sure:

    Here are my specs:

    Laptop: SL400

    IGPU: GM45

    RAM: 4GB

EGPU: PNY GT 640 DDR3 (temporary)

    EXP GDC BEAST V8

    PSU: 90W Laptop Charger 12v

    OS: Windows 8.1

Let me know if you need anything else!

Edit: I was reading the FAQ about the internal LCD display, and I'm thinking maybe it could be my GPU? If so, it's not the end of the world. It works just fine, but I'll shop around for low profile cards in the meantime.

  7. Hey guys, have any of you dealt with your EXP GDC v6 just flat out dying on you? I haven't tried the ATX ports yet, but I know my DC port no longer shows any signs of life. Since the company I bought it from is giving me hell about using my warranty on it, I'm guessing it's either:

    A. The solder needs to be reheated

    B. Trying to find a similar DC part to solder on myself

     or

    C. Beer, you're crazy, none of these work. I'm still fighting with the company on getting it repaired, but I'll be $25 in the hole just in shipping costs. Either way, I'm spending more money on this, I might as well had got a PE4L had I known how much trouble this was going to be. :/

  8. Hey I've been searching all over to see if there is any information regarding my problem, but I have failed to find any information that gives any advice to solve it.

I recently decided to hook up my egpu dock, the PE4C v2.1, paired with a Thermaltake TR2 430W and a GTS450. I remember the first time I installed the egpu, it worked fine and I eventually used a GTX470 on the dock. Later I thought my laptop died because it wouldn't turn on (couple months later), but upon fumbling around with it, I got it to come back to life by taking out some faulty ram. Now that I hooked it back up like I had it before, all I'm getting is a solid red light and no power whatsoever...There is also no detection between the dock and the laptop as well. I'm truly at a loss right now...I have no idea what is wrong. I've tried turning the laptop off and turning it on while hooked up, I've tried using x1 and x2 (x2 doesn't even have any light). I really need some help figuring out how to get this to work again.

Does Setup 1.3 detect it at all? Or is this your laptop that's faulty? It sounds like it's a voltage/power issue

  9. Update: So around the same time the forums here went down, the EXP GDC died. I'm not sure if it's just solely the DC adapter that's dead and maybe it can be replaced, (the company that I bought the board is giving me hell and a limb for the past week to prove that it's actually dead. I don't think I'm going to get my money back, let alone an actual repair without being $25 in the hole.) or maybe the ATX ports work. I do have a generic 300w PSU, but I don't know if the amperage (15A) will wreck/under-power both my GPU and whatever remaining ports left.

Either way, my eGPU journey is definitely on hold. Had I known I was going to get screwed by GearBest, I would had hold off. I'm pretty sad about it, but it is what it is. Maybe I'll take a stab at trying to fix it myself. Maybe the solder needs to be reheated, I don't know lol.

  10. This can happen if you've been twisting the expresscard end of the eGPU adapter cable. Then the connecting wiring becomes frayed or disconnected and of course no signal goes through. Without signalling the eGPU adapter will never get detected.

Your EXP GDC V6 eGPU adapter which is OK for Gen1 purposes used on your SL400. However, if your contemplating ever using it on a Gen2 capable machine like a Lenovo L430/T430/T540p then you may consider getting a BPlus PE4C V3.0 instead. It's soldered cable giving more reliable operation and (imho) has better build quality.

Yeah my cable does feel a bit dinged up. Aside from the expresscard tip, I barely touched the base of it, which makes it weirder.

But yeah, I'm going to be stuck on Gen1 for a while unless I get a good deal. My SL400 is mostly for showing off to see what old hardware can do. I'll use it until nothing runs on it anymore haha

  11. Perhaps the OS downgrade is a coincidence and the eGPU hardware has failed? You could confirm by re-loading Win10 and seeing if the eGPU is still detected then.

The eGPU uses PCIe lines, the USB port is of course USB. Completely separate wiring so if the USB works it doesn't have much relevance as to the PCIe lines. PCIe runs at a much higher clock rate.

Gotcha. I thought considering it was all in one board, it would work. I'll try again on Win10 around Tuesday or Wednesday and see where it goes. If it is the hardware, I'm still eligible for a replacement.

Edit: I think you're right about the egpu board being borked. Even Setup 1.3 couldn't detect it. Nothing is ever easy with me lol

  12. Hi Beer

Suggest to buy(donate )setup x1.3 from Tech Inferno Fan.saves me from the worse scenarios, especilay with windows 7,since the 8.1 and 10 act diferently with the grafics even alow to disable primary adapter, leaving their space for the egpu.think you have resource problem.anyway try dsdt override first.

Thanks for the response, Dan! That's what I figured. I just wanted to make sure that I did some troubleshooting before shelling out more cash. I'll keep everyone posted on my progress.

Edit: Stupid question: would a DSDT override even work even if the device manager doesn't even detect it at all? I get all the lights, fans, and usb ports going, my TOLUD is 3GB, is it still relevant?

    Just to double-check:

    eq4k4ZB.png

    Possible problem children?

    pnaHB0v.png

Edit 2: ^Forgot to mention that Port 3 is where I put my egpu in (expresscard). I guess I need an override after all?

  13. Back again! So I managed to get Windows 7 on my SL400 and managed to fix devices unrelated to this. However, since downgrading from Windows 10, my eGPU no longer autodetects in the express slot. I tried all the combinations you can try in the troubleshooting, but no avail. Any thoughts?

Edit: Also, just wanted to say Happy Thanksgiving to everyone :D

Edit 2: Tested out the USB port of the EXP GDC, and the thumb drive does detect. Resource issue?

Edit 3: Tried it with Windows 8.1. No change. I'm kind of at a loss. Would DIY Setup 1.3 detect it?

  14. Hi,

based on my own experience using Win 10, I'd recommend a downgrade from Win 10 to 7 . The automated driver installation of Win 10 screwed up everything for me. Even hiding the drivers with the special tool provided for Win 10 didn't work out well.

How lame! It's been half a year and Win 10 still can't get their crap together with their drivers. I might as well downgrade back because two of my other devices got bricked from the upgrade and I don't think there's any driver support on them anymore.

  15. Update: By some miracle, I did a teardown of my expresscard and put it back together and it worked the next day. My egpu turns on fine.

Now for the fun part! I did get the drivers that last supported the Optimus drivers, but the drivers are refusing to install or they come and go. I'm tempted to downgrade to Win 7 to see if it's a driver issue because my iGPU and my eGPU are not getting along.

Thankfully no Error 12. Mostly 28

  16. 34mm EC card fits a 54mm slot. Yes, I just flattened it a bit as was catching from being a bit too thick. That was with an EXP GDC V6. Never had that problem with a BPlus adapter.

That's what I have now. In the end, still couldn't fit sadly. I'm more worried that it didn't fit in the 34mm slot than the 54mm. I'll give an update on Thursday or Friday depending when the bracket gets here.

  17. I've had some occurrences where the expresscard was a little too fat so wouldn't slide in cleanly. Just flattening it out with my fingers thinned it enough to allow easy insertion. If there is more to yours than that then consider contacting your eGPU adapter manufacturer for a replacement EC eGPU adapter or cable.

First off, thank you for the reply! I thought I was the only one who had this issue! Forgive my ignorance, but which part did you flatten? The whole expresscard or just the tip?

I had already filled out a service ticket to the manufacturer and ordered a 54mm bracket just to see if it gives leverage, but obviously I'm not interested waiting every 2-4 weeks per shipment for any replacements haha.
