  1. Hello, this is because secure boot only works with operating system that have a signed boot key. Some versions Ubuntu have this, and some don't. The ones that do are just a recommended key and may not boot on all systems. So to start most Linux distros, secure boot needs to be off.

So it might not work on ALL PCs, but it does work on the Lenovo y510p. OP's machine.

How to Boot and Install Linux on a UEFI PC With Secure Boot

    • FTA: Modern versions of Ubuntu — starting with Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS and 12.10 — will boot and install normally on most PCs with Secure Boot enabled. This is because Ubuntu’s first-stage EFI boot loader is signed by Microsoft. However, a Ubuntu developer notes that Ubuntu’s boot loader isn’t signed with a key that’s required by Microsoft’s certification process, but simply a key Microsoft says is “recommended.” This means that Ubuntu may not boot on all UEFI PCs. Users may have to disable Secure Boot to to use Ubuntu on some PCs.

  2. Hi,

I have y510p with sli, recently I had to install ubuntu and for that had to disable secure boot.

After the installation, I have tried several times to enable Secure boot in uefi utility but the status still shows as "secure boot disabled".

Please can someone tell me why is this happening?

Hello, I have a y510p laptop also. You don't have to disable secure boot to dual boot windows and ubuntu. But it will only work if you use UEFI mode. if you have legacy bios mode enabled you can't use secure boot. Can you confirm you dont' have Legacy mode enabled?

I'm running Linux Mint which is almost the same as Ubuntu. I believe both distributions use the same signed keys..

  3. UNLESS I PUT MY LAPTOP INTO A FREEZER FOR SOME TIME!

Ok, if that worked multiple times I am amazed. Who told you to do that? or WHere did you learn that?

Have you tried doing this with the battery removed? I have a y510p also, and to boot into the UEFI/BIOS menu with the machine off, press the button on the left side of the machine near the power adapter port.

Do you have a 2nd GPU in the ultrabay slot? Remove it then try again.

Stop putting your laptop in the freezer. seriously, you shouldn't have to do that. and i wouldn't be surprised if water could condense in places you wouldn't want. (after taking it out)

I'm sure there is a verbose boot option, or diagnostic log available on the machine to help figure out what is causing the 3-4 second delay.

My guess would be a hardware problem, which is why i recommended removing the ultrabay card. bad CPU/memory can also result in similar behavior, although this model may beep or have a special indicated for bad cpu/memory/etc

  4. I currently have a Lenovo Y410p laptop and I'm having some issues with the current network adapter (Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230). Additionally I have heard that the performance of this network adapter is sub-par. I want to replace my network adapter but I don't know where to start looking for one that is suitable. Just looking for some guidance to get started.

I've already modded the BIOS on my laptop so adapter compatibility should not be an issue... I think.

I bought a "Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 Network Adapter (7260.HMWWB.R)" for my y510p. It was around $20-25 and does everything I currently need. Having to mod the BIOS for it is truly a hassle.

  5. I have one too can confirm the issues with touchpad, wifi and sli mode.

    1. Touchpad... I'm living with the issues currently. maybe ill get a wireless mouse.

    2. Wifi - Currently trying to get 5 posts so I can download the BIOS mod to remove the Wifi card whitelist. I want to upgrade to an "unsupported" Intel AC card

    3. SLI Mode... - In addition to overheating..

    4. Battery Life - Terrible with any nvidia cards running.. seriously an hour or two at best.

Battery tip - remove the ultrabay GPU, use the onboard intel graphics.. you can double the battery life that way. good enough for a movie and a half..
