  1. I am running the A10 modded bios but with no overcloking or increased voltages. I tried giving dell a call this morning and after being transferred the call disconnected Where would i stand with requesting a new PSU from dell? its a shame because i was hoping to do some benching this weekend but if the PSU dies at 49% load then that wont be much help lol Going to try dell again....and again.....and again until someone sends me a new PSU or tells me to bugger off! Will post back when i get some information back from them
  2. Now this is a strange one, i have tried looking through the forum and have found nothing (or not looking in the right places) About 4 months ago i was playing something pretty heavy on my R2 when the frame rate dropped, upon looking for possible causes i saw that i was running on battery power BUT the power adapter was plugged in on both ends and the little blue light was NOT on at the end of the plug. Setting the game on low was not a problem but i was able to re create the issue by bumping the settings up and right on time the frame rate would die as the adapter did. I called dell and they had a tech come out and have a look, i re created the problem when he was watching and he said it was a fault adapter so gave me a replacement while mine was sent off for analysis. STUPIDLY i did not test the replacement due to holiday timing but a few days later i received my old adapter back with a letter explaining that nothing was detected even when the same stress test was run, as advised by the tech that saw the problem occur. Strangely enough the problem disappeared until NOW...... Playing Battlefield 3 completely fine on ultra (with a few tweaks for about 60-100FPS) for about 4 hours with a friend when just like before the frame rate dropped and a quick shift back to desktop showed that i was indeed running on battery power and the adapter was completely dead but simply moving the adapter plug to another socket brought it back, a few minutes later it happened again but this time a socket change did not bring it back and i had to unplug it for about 5 mins and back in for it to work. Monitoring Temps and power usage shows i am nowhere near my limits in either resources, power usage or temps so i am not overloading, i have tried three different surge protectors and i am not running overclocked or using throttlestop ect... Is there any chance this is a laptop sided problem? i have no problem sending the adapter back to dell for another checkup but i have been assured by email that the tests carried out will be 100% accurate and that the fault does not rest with the adapter :S
  3. Thanks for the reply's guys, downloaded the programs and have bookmarked the web pages ready for the weekend, got a few assignments due so going to get them done before i start messing with the deadly stuff lol
  4. Wow looks like a nice bit of software, i shall download have a have a play with it Thanks svl7
  5. Hi Guys/Gal's I am planning on upgrading from my Xfire 48702's to some Xfire 6x series but i don't have the funds yet, in the mean time i want to try playing with overcloking them, i already have the modded A10 BIOS chilling at 3% overclock, 5% if i know i am going to be doing some modeling. Anyway is there any way to overclock the 4870's? or is it only the 5x series that can be overclocked?
  6. Just managed to get it out, it seems that once the tag snapped a small amount of glue that holds the strip to the caddy then stuck the caddy to the frame :S had a go at removing the glue with a plastic pry tool but it snapped so had to use a metal one and it has scratched the crud out of my frame Anyway all went well and now my new SSD and HDD is installed and the difference is insane xD
  7. Thanks StamatisX, a full re-install is in the books but for now i just want to test the hardware out, so far i have the OS whittled down to around 30Gb ready for the cloning. My test clone of a 300gb onto a portable drive took around 19 hours but that was 300Gb onto 500gb so it is going to be quicker.....hopefully on another note i have tried to remove the primary drive and the little strip that allows for easy retraction has snapped and it is making it impossible to remove any easy way to do it without the strip?
  8. Hi Guys and Gal's i need some input. I have ready my new HDD & SSD waiting to be installed but i am in a bit of a tricky time frame with Uni work so instead of doing it right i am going to; * Switch the primary HDD for the SSD (120GB SanDisk Ultra SSD G25) (pure OS and programs) * Switch the secondary drive out for the 1Tb Drive (1TB SSUNG 2.5 SATA HN-M101MBB) (formatted to 100Gb, 400Gb and 500Gb Partitions) I am going to do it right with a full windows re-install when i have a safe week to do it but for now what i was planning on doing was sticking the new drives in some caddys and cloning the OS onto the SSD and manually moving the remaining media (Moves, Pictures, Songs and Steam Games) onto the respective partitions then when all was fine an tested switching the drives and running some directory and location updates. Is this possible? as i said this is just to get the new hardware running and tested and i will do a full re work closer to Christmas when my entire world does not depend on my R2 lol
  9. Hehe thank god that did the trick, could not work out why it would not give an external source too, anyway its going fine now thanks again =)
  10. Awww i broke my Audio I have not made any changes or modifications but this morning i booted it up and got no startup sound so i rooted around and found that i get no sound period. Diagnostic claims everything is ok and even makes sounds during bios tests but i cant get sound once logged in i have tried removing and re installing the drivers with no luck, any ideas? EDIT: Right this s looking strange, every troubleshoot i run says that i am getting an audio source but i am not, even when i use and external source like my Logitech Z4 or my Alienware headset i still don't get any output :S could the unlocked A10 bios cause this because i flashed that a couple of days ago but i had sound yesterday when i was testing OC settings with Rage. any suggestions or should i open a new thread?
  11. Right i have the new HDD's ready and being cloned as we speak, i have also sourced a couple of sandybridges and some new 6x ATI's but i want to play with overclocking before i retrofit the thing, could i get a nudge in the right direction for CPU and GPU overclocking and monitoring?
  12. Thanks for the replies guys, i now have my SSD and HDD on order and i can now look into the new graphics cards, i think you are right and i will try and get two of them for Xfire, if now i may pass for now. i can see a lot of time spent on here Thanks again Nobby
  13. Hi Guys and Gal's I am new to the forums having only just discovered that such a vast resource existed I have had my R2 for about 12 months give or take a few weeks. I had searched the net for some information regarding swapping out my Xfire 4870's for a single 6x or even remain in XFire with a pair, i also wanted to swap out the CPU and HDD's but after a few weeks of searching i could not find anything besides what was on the Alienware wiki (this was around 3-4 months ago) so to cut a long story short i could not find anything and gave up the idea of a overhaul. But then after searching the other day i went back onto the wiki to look for anything to do with HDD's and was linked here.......Alienware Valhalla!! so i have dug up my old list and i am going to ask you inhabitants of TechInferno my questions i will post my build first as it may help; Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 1.7Ghz Core i7 Q820 Crossfire HD Radeon 4870’s 4Gb Ram 2 x 350Gb HDD RAID0 Configuration DW1520 Wireless-N Network Card Sot-loading Dual Layer Blue-ray Burner Now for my questions which looking back on them may be silly but i need to know from people i know use Alienware's not from people who claim have "Computer Knowledge", my questions/problems are; * I want to upgrade my HDD's, i already have 2x350Gb 7200rpm drives in RAID0 but i want to replace them with a 150Gb SSD for system only and a 1Tb HDD that i will partition into 2 drives, one for media and the other for Steam + Games. I took the back off my beloved and took the existing drives out and saw that they are listed at Sata but the drives i want are listed as SATA2, is this going to be a problem? can i install to SATA2 drives into slots that used to hold SATA1 drives? i would just normally just try and order SATA1 drives but i cant find any larger than 60Gb if someone could point out a good SSD that would be cool * I have been on the page about getting the Alien back into Alienware with all the links to backgrounds, sounds and programs and it reminded me of a small problem....actually two problems i have. 1 of them is when i use the touch controls on the top i will get double icons come up :S and now that i have changed the icons i have two sets of icons come up :S it is not the mods i have done as it has done it since day one but i cant seem to find a hit on the net for the problem. the second problem is that when i try and create a new AlienFX profile it crashes to desktop without an error. Well that's it......for now i may be back depending on the remaining mods left to try out Thanks NOBBY
