  1. Ya agree with you there. Seems to be only nvidia these days I've heard nothing out of AMD myself about them releasing anything. Would be nice to have a 3rd option... :S

I agree, it does only seem like 1. Almost forget that AMD is in existence solely because Nvidia dominates not only with performance and reliability but most major video game makers build their games around Nvidias architecture which is why you see games running better on Nvidia cards as well as the "niche" features you get. (Like the hair FX in the witcher 3 as well as in tomb raider) Its already hard for AMD to keep up (and it doesn't really even) i don't think there would even be a possibility of another company stepping into the race. Nvidia has almost monopolized the market at this point.

  2. I haven't seen the brand new AW's but i have a 2014 17 with the 880m and i love the build quality of it. I thought that the new ones with the 9 series had aluminum screen back? Mine does. If you would want something with a 8 series then i'd recommend this model. You could always sell the 880 and pay a few hundred more for the 980 upgrade if you really are looking to run a 980....... ill be upgrading mine soon as well, for the moment the 880 gets the job done. Best of luck with making your decision.

  3. As stated above the older AW 17 models that came with either a 780 or 880 with 4th gen i7's are a solid choice, only thing is you would need to shell out for a 980. Aside from that they are fully upgrade-able. I'm currently typing this from one right now, don't have any complains i love it. My setup is i7 4910mq O.C to 4.2 gigz 32 gigz ram 880m 120hz 3D 1080p display blu-ray writer/player and 2 1tb samsung evo SSD. The new models don't have disk drives and CPU and GPU i believe is soldered to the board (not 100% on that i know one if them is at least) and only upgrade-able to 16gigz of ram... but at the same time they have the graphics amplifier which is pretty cool. You can get one of those for under 2500, but i don't believe it meets your criteria.
