  1. I read somewhere that this is also due to FCC regulations. I don't remember the details but it was something to do with getting the laptop certified by the FCC for use and not having to vet each and every wireless card out there. Not sure why it would apply here but not on a desktop computer.

I did a quick google search but I was unable to find the original thread I read about this but here is a quote:

The Wireless card Whitelisting is due to FCC regulation, which states that certain classes of devices must be Certified by the FCC themselves in the "End-Use Configuration" to be legal to sell, use, take on Airplanes etc...IBM (Now Lenovo) Whitelist Wireless cards to ensure that the device will always conform to the FCC approval that the device was evaluated for.
  2. That's unfortunate, that's exactly what I did as well. Won't be messing with that next time. How long did it take to get it fixed? Also do I have to worry about my data or my 128gb m.2 ssd?

You don't need to worry about the data on your SSD. The firmware update flashes the BIOS chip on your MOBO. The HDD/SSD should remain undisturbed. If you do brick your laptop though you should be able to remove the SSD and put it in another computer and retrieve the data but I would backup your data prior to the firmware update in case you do brick it you don't have to figure out a way to retrieve data should you need it urgently.

  3. I found two ways to fix the issue temporarily. 1. Reboot the router. Most times my laptop wireless will sync for longer than a day. Sometimes I only get a few hours out of it. 2. completely uninstall the wifi drivers. reboot and then install the latest drivers from scratch.

It's not a permanent solution but hopefully it bides some time for those who are thinking of upgrading. I am reading through the forums here and I will likely be updating to the modded BIOS and upgrading to a 7260 card with AC so I can start getting some 5GHz networking going. I love the Y410p minus this awful wireless card.
