The heatsink for the GTX 880m, and the placement of the electrical components on the video card is different. The heatsink wouldn't match up with the GTX 1060 without cutting some parts out of the heatsink is what I was told by a vendor on ebay and that you also have to use the 120hz display in order to run the GTX 1060 MXM. That being said I wonder if the same would work with a 1070 or 1080 MXM...

  2. Did you ever get an answer on this? Even if it does work what GPU are you running? The R1 was either 780m or 880m unless you upgraded to 980m and I wouldn't want to be trying to push games at 4k on any of those cards TBH

Tech at XOTIC PC said it can only be upgraded up to 980m and display cannot because the chipsets are different. No 1070 or 1080 because of chipsets as well. I bet someone has done it though.

  3. Making sure that the low power C States are enabled in the bios and are working correctly is the best way to reduce power consumption. You can use RealTemp to check what C States are being used.

    RealTemp T|I Edition

When an individual core enters C6 or C7, the core is removed from the voltage rail so it is getting zero volts. It's internal clock is also stopped so that core is running at zero MHz. When C States are enabled and a computer is idle, individual cores can be spending 99% of the time in this state. Changing the MHz or core voltage is not going to make any difference because the CPU is already as low as it can go. Skylake CPUs use the new C8 C State for further power savings as more parts of the core go dormant when not needed.

Under clocking and using a high turbo boost is not necessary. With C States enabled, this is all taken care of by the CPU.

Under volting will help when the CPU has a load on it.

Here is an interesting paper about power consumption.

Power Optimization – a Reality Check

Perfect Thank you so much for all the information. So I guess all I need to do is find a motherboard which most efficient in the the way c state is implemented in their bios.

  4. I'm thinking of purchasing a 5960x for my multi purpose 24/7 server. I've been testing Wake On Lan with my current setup and it's not consistent in terms of always being able to wake up. So I rather just have it always running. My current server is an Intel i7 875k with an evga p55 sli motherboard. I have it idling at about 65 watts at the wall measured with a killawatt. So finally to my question. What's the best motherboard for both over clocking and saving power? Also what tips to lower power consumption other then under clocking and under volting ram and cpu? Is there any motherboard that can run less cores as needed with the 5960x? I plan on under clocking it very low and have a very high turbo boost.

  5. There is the AGA (Alienware Graphics Amplifier) which allows you to connect a desktop GPU to your laptop.

I know that much thanks (about the amplifier). I just wanted a full gaming experience on the go with a 980m and the 4980hq for video rendering. The amplifier is just a bonus for me cause I have a gaming desktop and that defeats the purpose of being mobile. I'll just stick to my Alienware 17 R5 for work/play and my personal grid(GameStream) server + Shield when I need to be extra mobile. Thank you guys for the quick response.

  6. Update so the only way to get one is to order a laptop with it or know someone in the system. Also Alienware, XoticPC, Clevo do not have any info/deny any compatibility with replacing say clevo gtx 980m in to the alienware 17. Card might fit but between bios and heat sink it may not work out at the moment. Doing the above will also void warranty so I've been told numerous times today.

  7. GTX 900M Series dropped for the Asus G751 and Sager/Clevo and MSI. Does anyone have one in their AW 17? I have the newest model and after calling Alienware and Xotic PC they haven't officially tested it in house so I wanted to know if any of you guys have gotten a chance to test it? I'm in the process of acquiring one although its not 100% guarantee that will be able to get it yet. If someone beats me to it LMK how it goes.

  8. Essentially I want to build the most power efficient/effective personal GRID(Nvidia) server as the title states Nuc vs Mac Mini vs Other(recommendations).

Would like to compare gaming performance and power consumption for a personal GRID Server In the works. My old eGPU Setup

My cpu throttled even after getting 2 different units and undervolting so I returned the MacBook Pro. Now I want to build an always on GRID Server with as little hit in the power consumption department as possible at least in idle. Nuc's have very low idle and load power consumption vs Mac Mini which has low idle but 3-4 times higher load power consumption and desktop CPU's are out of the question as far as idle Power Consumption goes (unless someone could point me in the right direction not looking for atoms lol).

What ever platform I end up using I will additionally use

-GTX 970 or 980 most likely 970 less power enough performance

    -Sonnet Echo Express III-D

-Corsair 550 RM if need be.

  9. Can you do a Unigine Heaven Benchmark (v4) and also Cinebench(vR15) please. Would like to compare gaming performance and power consumption for a personal GRID Server In the works. My old eGPU Setup

  10. @squinks I have a mid 2014 Macbook Pro 15" 2.8GHz (4.0Ghz Turbo Boost) 16GB Ram GT 750M 1TB PCI SSD + (External GPU) GTX 780 Ti SC + Sonnet Thunderbolt 2 III-D Chassis. Im getting the same +/- scores as you with and without external PSU (Corsair RM 550). So my question is do I really need lug around my 550 Watt PSU when clearly its not a factor in stability or benchmarks? Will or can I damage the GTX 780 Ti by not using the external PSU?
