  1. Yea just my luck that i have one bad card from each set.

What happened was a that i think when I put up the 5870 some moisture was on my hand. Probably from eating a popsicle. Lol. Anyway ot was on the corner of the card. Cause enough corrosion to eat some solder and kill the card. At least Dell will replace that. My fear is that since I've already had a mobo replacement and two gpu replacements they will push me for an M18x which I don't really want. I want to continue benching the M17x R2.

For the 6970s issue, Pkhetan is on it and working on an RMA. If I can keep the gpu at 24k and push the cpu to 22k. I think i can get a 24k overall score. If I can get a modded bios I think i can even get 25k with a 330w psu.

  2. Looks like I may have to RMA one of my cards. It's giving me BSOD, and anytime it hits the 3D Clocks now it auto shuts down the computer as if I yanked the power cord. Tested it in both slots. X-Fire it results in a BSOD since it's the slave card, when put in the master slot it auto shuts down. It has been running sketchy for a few days.

To make matters worse, when I stored the 5870s, it looks like one card had gotten some sort of condensation on the corner which ate some solder. Now it beeps and gives me the GPU signal on the scroll/caps flashing at boot. *sign* looks like I'm going single carded for a while. At least I was able to squeeze the last bench run out of it, and was able to keep the CPU score a little higher. Had I used some Dice I think I could have hit the 24K overall mark.

At least I was able to squeeze this out between issues. I prepped the system and put a little dice on it, but only made it though one run. Maybe once I get the RMA (6970s), and replacements from dell (for the 5870s) I'll be up and running full speed. Things looked so promising. :(

  3. I know! I'd easily be in the upper 23K-24K overall vantage score if I could push harder. I've scored 23K CPU on Vantage numerous times, and the GPU's could easily score 25K. Once I get moved out to VA, I'm going to get with TheWiz, and see if we can't remove the bios PSU check. If that works out, better believe I will be picking up a 330W.

  4. Here are some posts I made at NBR, easier to copy and paste, but these are my prelim benches on the 6970s in the R2.

Here is a stock GPU clock run that I did last night. I havn't gotten around to overclocking till I can get the cards flashed. I'll probably have to do them one by one in the master slot with winflash first, then I should be able to through atiflash in dos. But here it is. Only thing I changed was put the CPU TDP at 74W.

Stock GPU clocks, CPU at 140MHz FSB with a 74w TDP.

  5. There should be some interesting updates to this thread in the next few weeks. I've put in an order for two 6970's for my R2. We'll see just how far they can be pushed, I'd like to think the that would make an XM CPU based R2 capable of going head to head with an M18x. I'm sure still ths scores would not reach M18x capabilities, but it'll be interesting none the less. The one thing I have on my side is the more overclockable CPU. There are no time limits, still I don't think this will affect 3D based benchmarks.

  6. I voted 11.5. Does 11.5 show improvements over 11.4 enough to make a differance? If so I might take one of my days off for some good ole R2 benching if I can throw a few points on top of my top scores. Not going to be able to hold a candle to the Avenger, but still might be some good fun. If I remember right I was close to 22K on Vantage on the R2. Not sure if 11.5 would be able to make up for the +/- 300pts I was from 22K. But I'd definately like to see the review based on the most recent drivers, since that is what most people will be interested. Especially if it maximizes performance at stock clocks. Thats what the Aleinware crowd would want. ;) IMHO anyhow. Either way, looking forward to the review. An 18xR2 may be in my future. Especially since from the ORB Futuremark benches, the site lists the mobo as 18xR1, I figure an R2 is sure to come down the line. Ok I'm ranting, enough beer for me. 11.5! :D

  7. Tuesday would be welcomed. Not sure if I can wait much longer before I spend my money elsewhere.

Like on gas? Here it jumped from $3.70 straight to $4.15. Nothing in between. 10:30 am it jumped two days ago. /rant

Given the 18x price tag, Id be interested on thier launch sales. I just want to see the bios :P

  8. Hmm. I may call soon. Just ran WEI for the heck of it and it hosed my display drivers and now upon boot its giving me a bsod "registry error" without a few sec of the desktop. I can re image and that would probably fix it. Problem is its on my 940 and i bought with a 520m. Still May push it though. I think the 940 is good though. Just needs extra voltage if I use TS.

Thanks Brian, May be calling mid May :P

  9. Hmm, not sure whats going on, but in the last few days I've had two BSODs. Thats with the CPU Vcore at +75mv. If it persists, I may try and just get a replacement. At this point I've had two GPU replacements, a mobo replacement, and the touch strip/ribbon replaced. I'm also too lazy to trouble shoot it. Maybe I'll try for a credit towards the M18x, but I'd hate to see the RGB/19x12 go :( Those are two things i'm attached to. Maybe I'll just wait for the R2 to become unavailable in the outlet before I go that route :P

BSOD was right after coming out of Unreal Tournament 3. I was just running it real quick to get an idea of GPU temps, since I've noticed CPU temps have been up since the weather has warmed up which I expected, but in the few min I played, HWInfo32 reported a max of 87*C on the CPU. May have to eventually turn on the A/C :P

Whats the ETA on the M18x anyway?

  10. Haha, yea it is, I used it to stop the Dice cup (Koolance V2) from sliding on the CPU die. the computer was still at a slight angle and I couldn't find anything to get it perfectly level. Closest thing to keep it level was a few of my fiances chick flicks hahaha. Plus I was kinda crammed for time :P It's an old one as you can see a brown hole in it, I think from a burn lol.

  11. NBR Copy and paste ;)

    i7 920XM (ES)

    wPrime 32M @ 4.002MHz: 6.275 sec

    wPrime 1024M @ 4002.3 MHz: 192.72 sec

For some reason two cores remained at low temps, and the other two went as high as 44*C. Maybe I'll mess with it later. Cant get the mobile chips as cold as desktop chips because the cold bug real easy. At Idle, throttle stop would read as low as -20*C, though I'm sure the chips temps were even lower. Maybe the pot wasn't sitting quite right. But it's made for a desktop mobo, so I couldn't bolt it down.

I think thats the end of the line for that chip unless I can get some more voltage :D

@MW, Sorry to hear your sistem is KIA, At least your getting the 18x, I may upgrade, depends on what the costs are and what I can get for my 17x. Doubtful though lol, though I'd love to bench the 18x, only if it's as OC friendly as the 17x R2.

  12. if you look at his pic closely the only vapor is hovering around the dry ice and none if any frost has showed on his exposed metal heat sinks as one might think should happen. But i am sure that he has that rag around the area for the reason of prevention in case there is some condensation.

Yea, didn't have any issues, but actually the rag was to hold the dry ice in place. It tended to slide since I didn't have it at a perfecly flat angle, but i definately helped cool the componets. Tommorrow I may try with my dice pot and see how that works out. Don't xpect too bug a diff, since I think voltage is my limit now. But we'll see. If I can make time

  13. Sounds great !

    But I am wondering why...

They went with 2X USB 2.0 and 2X USB 3.0 instead of going 4 X USB 3.0 ??? (apart from the ESATA3/USB2 port)

To me this makes no sense at all. Since USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0 hardware, what sense does it make to put limitations on the hardware??? This has me stumped and I hope it doesn't reflect the type of thinking that went into the overall design of the system.

  14. Nice! Finally broke 6K, congrats! Thats awesome. Try lowering your TDP to about 105W and see if that prevents you from hitting the thermal limits. From my benching it didn't look like the CPU drew more than 101W according to HWinfo32.

StamatisX, Have you tried raising the BCLK with your voltage increased? Thats when the extra voltage really helps.

  15. The pot was about $170, and 183 shipped, so it definately wasn't cheap. On my other runs I had the 150mV, but I'm hoping this will give me a little more headroom, to OC, since the temps will remain lower as a whole. If only I had more voltage. But I'm also going to get a cheap mobo and some CPUs to play with as I learn more about sub zero cooling. Doesn't have to be XM CPUs, I just enjoy pushing hardware, even the low end stuff, and I figure the low end stuff will keep the hobby cheaper.
