Well we made a thread here and collected some ideas. I think Nando even mailed that to AKiTiO to make them aware of that!

Since eGPUs are now officially supported, a box with better specs and more eGPU compatible would have been great.

Maybe we will see another product of them...?!

The AKiTiO stock PSU offers (I think) 60W and some of the power is needed for the AKiTiO itself. Taking into account that the PSU will have a "bad" efficiency, I am sure that you can't even provide 60W for long period of time.

So a GTX950 will NOT work with a AKiTiO out of the box. But because we know the specs/dimensions of the plug (barrel plug 2.5 and 5.5mm) we can look around for other PSUs.

The alternative PSU only has to match the plug and provide 12V.

A lot of people are using the Dell DA-2 220W and created adapters to provide power to the GPU and the AKiTiO simultaneously.

You would still need a better PSU, e.g. a 120W 12V PSU. But even people with a 750Ti and that 120W PSU have stability issues. To be safe and guarantee the stability even with peak loads I would recommend an even more powerful PSU. Unfortunately 120W is the biggest PSU with a barrel plug and all the other PSUs will need an adapter.

Bottomline: Might work with a 120W PSU, but I'm sure you will have to underclock the card to make it stable.

Do you have the Idle CPU load bug? When you boot Windows, is there already a constant 10-20% load that does not fade?!

If yes, try and hiberante your MacBook with the eGPU for 1min and wake it up again.

Memory not used? Sounds like the GTX 970 ^^

AKiTiO confirmed on Facebook, that the case is the Thunder3. So it will be available without the SSD, but any innovation? nah

Just make sure the PSU has the correct amount of 6/8-Pin PCIe power plugs.

Mainly with MacBook Pros and Airs. Some might have problems in Windows if they have a dGPU inside as well.

Yes, but I am not sure if Windows can boot from a USB drive on a Mac. Guess you need to install it on the Mac before anyway.

Yeah it is good. 600W might be a bit of an overkill

I used an USB 3.0 SSD to put all my windows games on.

Anything should work. But using a riser will bring a "weak spot" into your system and you need to take care, that you get a propper one and that nothing else might interfere with the signals.

Brown is equal to black = ground.

The pinout of the 4-pin Molex is:

yellow = 12V

black = ground

black = ground

red = 5V

The case can only mount SFX PSUs and not the big ATX ones. I think it is possible, but not intendet by e.g. Silverstone.

If you do not want to make cuts to the case, you might want to consider using a PCIe riser cable.

Paperclip trick will work just fine.

That should work! But even when the external is displayed to work on the Iris, it is connected and running by the eGPU. Setting the external monitor as the primary will make games start with eGPU performance!

You do not really need a riser with power, but in general riser cable are often the cause of problems, since they are of poor quality.

Could be that 3dmark11 doesn't need that much bandwidth. Try Firestrike!

Could also relate to different clock speeds of the cards (overclocks).

@pixxelpusher A reference card might work, but I have my doubts if a overclocked 3rd party card will work.

Unfortunately not an easy one.

You can try to test the stability with lower power settings in Windows. If you have them you could use that to create a new GPU BIOS and flash that to the card in a normal PC.

But please try to find that settigns in Windows. Just to make sure, that it really is a power issue.

Well in that case it could work, if you are going to guide the flexible riser towards the "observer" and through the lower section back into the case. Might require a long flexible riser.
