I have the m17x R4, i7 4900MQ, GTX 780m and 32GB of 1600Mhz Ram, reporting 1333 Mhz in XTU as well. I know it's running at 1600, cpu-z reports it as that, so do various other programs.

Anything Maxwell should show substantial power efficiency clock for clock compared to Kepler, Nvidia have done quite well with Maxwell. There's still a bit of ambiguity around how well it will scale to larger platforms, but the 860m should be quite a beast for it's market point.

I would say stick with the 780m, you won't need 8GB of VRAM, not at 1080p. I have the 780m in my R4, I haven't even hit 3GB of usage in even the most demanding titles, and I downsample everything from 1620P.

I couldn't see there being any problem running 16GB, i think the limitations would be more physical then anything, if any.

Can you please mod the latest bios for my Alienware 17? I haven't been able to find anything on here that works, as I did not realise Alienware 17 was a specific model. I thought I had an m17x R4, but apparently it is an Alienware 17. I am not aware of the difference, but none of the bios mods for M17x R4 work.
As per instructions, here's a link to the bios I need modded. Driver Details | Dell Australia
The .bin dump from flashChk is attached as a zip also. I apologise if this has already been done, I couldn't find much info regarding the Alienware 17 and bios modding, and whether there is a difference between this and the Alienware M17x R* range.
