Hopefully someone else with some more knowledge can chime in, but I agree that it shouldn't matter if it was originally from a R4 that had the upgraded display.  It sounds like it's been flashed too but other than a weird driver issue, I'm not sure what the issue could be :/

Sounds like it was throttling back, especially if temps were fine.

I love my little M11x.  It's not the fastest laptop around, especially not now, but it's small enough to throw in a bag and carry with me anywhere I have to go.

It's a 970m man, I'd be careful pushing it.  Mobile GPU's aren't always the most receptive to being messed around with.

I'd always buy a better quality, smaller monitor over one a few inches larger, that's not as nice.  There's a lot more to monitors than just screen size.

Even now I don't think 4k is worth it unless you have money to blow.  The difference between 1080p and 4K is definitely noticeable, but the price difference doesn't justify it IMO.

I heard the automatic setting can cause issues though?
