Has any attempt ever been made to unlock the BIOS of a Dell E6420? I've got the

Intel HD graphics and I'd like to increase the VRAM to anything upwards of 64MB.

I may be shooting for the moon on this one, if anyone can offer some input I'd be

appreciative.

Did you happen to turn it on while you had it tore down and actually check the temps (with your finger or a thermometer)

while it was running?

It shut down with Diablo 3 almost instantly, have you tried running any other games on it? What were the results?

This website usually gives me a pretty good idea on what a motherboard can handle for RAM.

I don't know if unlocking the BIOS will help release some of the limitations of the board or not.

Does it feel like its getting that hot from outside the system?

Since I'm not familiar with this particular model, my process would be roughly as follows. Granted I work on laptops and desktops every day and sometimes

the more obvious solutions and answers come to me later rather than sooner, I find this relates somehow to how much coffee / sleep I've had.

There's a lot of things you could do to diagnose / confirm / resolve the issue but it depends on the how how confident you are with laptop hardware.

First check your power supply, confirm that your DC voltage matches the DC output and that the DC output matches the little label on the underside of the laptop.

Check to make sure your system is not overclocked in any way in the BIOS, minor voltage changes will drastically change the output heat of your chipset.

If it really feels hot I would tear that thing down, remove the HDD, depending upon the configuration of which way the

board faces etc, prop it up on it's side, boot into BIOS, and test the larger chips with the best temperature sensor around, my finger. You wanna check the heatsink, which

probably connects the PCH and CPU. If the heatsink is way too hot to the touch then there is definitely something wrong.

If the themal paste or pads are there and are still gooey and the heatsink seems totally secure then maybe someone else can chime in with some instruction. I'd be leaning

towards a motherboard problem.

Also do me a favor and check in your C:\Windows\ for a folder called minidump and see if there are any files in there that were created around the time you experienced those crashes.

Do a RAM test on there memtest x86, to start. You said you tried three different hard drives and got the same results on all three?

Hello all! I'm from western NY in the US. I stumbled upon this forum searching for answers and information for my MSI gx740, the current bane of my existence. This laptop was a second hand purchase intended to be used as a gaming system for my TV to be discreetly tucked away in the cabinet, but first I'd like to get it using an SSD.

I've got an ASUS G53SX which I've over-upgraded and treat better than most of my siblings. One day maybe I'd look into unlocking my BIOS and opening up more options, but for the time being, it's perfect for me as is.

Besides my two seemingly black and white laptop situations I work as a computer tech in a very small town. I've dealt with tons of computer issues, some left me scratching my head, and have developed an ethic based on service and problem resolution over sales. I love researching anything under the sun and am more than thrilled in a community where I can enhance my understanding of the machines I work with everyday.

Firstly I'd like to say thanks to everyone who contributes to this website.

I've read through countless webpages and this entire sticky, all 84 pages, and am looking to get something clarified. The unlocked BIOS for the GX740, does it or does it not support AHCI for SSDs? I've done quite a bit of unlocking on the BIOS, seemingly everything and cannot get the Chipset tab to show up or make any headway in having the BIOS recognize my SSD when it is set to AHCI mode. If anyone can let me know, it'd be greatly appreciated.
