I can tell you now that the Intel Centrino Wireless N450 6300 works fantastically with all Debian variations (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mint..) using the iwlwifi driver.

It supports 2.4/5GhZ abgn and is rated for 450 Mbps.

How do you know that they aren't both active? Could you post some screenshots of your device manager and anything else you might find pertinent?

Have you tried a full cold boot? Remove the battery and remove the AC adapter, then hold the power button for 30 seconds. Plug the AC adapter back in and hold the power button again.

Does anything AT ALL happen?

As long as it's the same form factor, it should work just fine.

Make sure you uninstall the drivers for the previous wireless adapter first, after that install the new card then the new adapters.

The soft buttons are typically a hardware killswitch, so you won't have to worry about them not working.
