  1. This has been such a HUGE help. I too had the Error 28 when booting up from the USB drive, but went back and read that I needed the PRR2.exe on the drive. After running that before running "fpt.exe -f modname.bin -bios", it sayed it is safe to flash and everything went off without a hitch.

Some smart SOB's on this forum, and MANY thanks to SVL7 for this guide.

  2. I ordered the 6235 and will be installing it tomorrow. Ordered the first thing I saw, and never purchasing a laptop wifi card I thought $24 was a steal. After ordering it and doing some research, I should have went for the 7260 :(

O well, if home network transfer rates are slowing down, I will probably spend $26 and get the 7260. ANYTHING has to be better than this 2230 though!

    Edit: Installed!

    3mbps at work to 12mbps.

    VERY satisfied!

    Edit 2:

    18mbps at home to 57mbps.

    12mbps at work to 20mbps.

After I left work, I completely uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. Then got 57mbps at home and just updated the newest speed test on works network.

Extremely happy with the 6235, and would recommend it to anyone!

  3. I'm enjoying the Y500 I have. Dual 750M's, with 120GB mSATA and 256GB SSD. It screams for the amount of money spent. Picked up a BDRW drive for it and an HD caddy for my linux boot (still dual booting W8.1 and Ubuntu seem to have some issues when you install Ubuntu on another drive. I wont get into that part because I've many options with no such luck. The only problem I've had with this laptop is the whitelisted BIOS junk... I would like my wirelessAC card to work. I found the forum here about modifying the BIOS, but now waiting to be approved for downloads.

I bought the y500 with dual 650's from a friend for around $500. I am jealous seeing everyone with the dual 700 series and the i7's, but for the price I couldn't pass it up. As now I will be more of a traveling tech with my job, a laptop is a great investment and couldnt argue the price. Hoping the dual 650's will be able to game somewhat!

The only thing I am disappointed in (besides windows 8) is the WIFI card. My new one comes in tomorrow, but my modified bios isn't taking (error 28). Hopefully by this weekend I can be on my 5ghz network at home and gaming away though :)

Edit: Figured out the error 28 problem, now COME ON WIFI CARD!

  4. I got a 256gb when it was about $1 per gb. If I had to do it again I would get a 512gb with the prices dropping like they are. I have a storage server with 6tb of space, but I find myself deleting a lot of games to make room for other stuff to keep everything I use on the fast drive.

As per your question, yeah 64gb IS enough, but with price drops I would go 128gb if you can afford it to be safe.

  5. So far i dont mind windows 8..or rather 8.1. in 8.1 they got the startmenu back which was pretty nice. =]

Also to make things look a bit more nerdy i add a few skins with Rainmeter. You should check it out it has soon CPU temps and other things. You can add some GPU graphs, clock speeds, and temp using Afterburner.

8.1 did make Windows 8 more manageable for me, but as an IT guy I can not see implementing this stuff in out work environment. It works much better on touch screens as well.

  6. I have had pretty good luck with Ebay knock off parts for PC's. Caddies are one of those things that cost an arm and a leg for factory ones, where as Ebay knock offs do they same job and look the same to the naked eye. Thanks for this TS, as I am sure I will probably order one for my SSD :)
