HDMI tends to be quieter for some reason.

I have similar issue - even on max settings, the audio from tv is very low - at first also thought there is no sound

I am seeing the MSI g-series laptops as best price\value. You might want to take a look and compare those to aliens

I am running win 8.1 dell R15 (2 years old) laptop - works fine for me.
