  1. there should be a way to 'short' the connection to the CMOS battery and cause the bios to reset. done it to a few toshibas' in the past. As for making the usb drive bootable, as long as you downloaded the DOS files (win98) and the hp formatting tool it will be bootable. for me i had to put my computer into legacy mode to properly boot from it. So after you reset the bios change from UEFI to legacy and press F12 when the bios first boots up to enter the boot manager. AND VOILA

i forgot to mention, only when i was in legacy mode was i able to boot from the usb. it was not showing usb bootable in UEFI mode.

alright, thanks, I was worried about shorting the CMOS battery since its non removable, I'm thinking a 10ohm resistor should stop anything from being damaged, and I think I can borrow one from a roommate

Tried it, no luck, just used a breadboarding wire I had lying around, shorted the CMOS, and then held the power button, without battery or being pluged in, nothing

  2. Well, followed the instructions exactly for the 8.01 BIOS, but ran into an issue where my USB drive isn't being detected as bootable, running windows 8.1 and cannot access the BIOS due to forgetting the password, and not sure if theres any way to reset it as I haven't found much info on pulling the CMOS battery

  3. Honestly, I'd avoid anything with the word "Gaming" in its name, you're probably better off getting an external microphone and some good headphones, more for your money I find, but then again, I'm using a webcam for my microsphone and I have a pair of audio-technica ATH-A700, fantastic headphones if a little on the higher end price range

  4. Well, I'm in the embarrassing situation of having forgotten my BIOS password on a Y580, any way I can reset it, it looks to me like disconnecting the CMOS is a no go and that there's no jumpers for it, would re-flashing the BIOS work, only issue is I have the 8.01 version of the bios and cant find a download for it. Although I don't mind putting a custom BIOS on this thing

  5. So, maybe a year about a friend of mine got a Y580, as did I, well, about a month after she got her's the plastic bits that protect the heatsink just started to crack, she takes even better care of hers then I do, and yet now her's is missing 3 of the blastic bars and the keyboard side of the lower case is lifting off, I'm not asking how to fix this, I'm asking has anyone else seen this happen before?
