What are your idle temps on it? I just upgraded one of my GT 240M M15x models to the GTX 660M, but despite a careful (and purposely sparse) application of Arctic Silver 5, the GPU still idles at 65C with fans at 2,8000RPM (manual with Hwinfo since the fan control doesn't seem to work automatically).
Also, you didn't get the fans to work, did you? I got the Dell 660M, but still no automatic fan control.
Automatic fan control works fine. At idle the temp is about 55C with fans at 2800RPM. The temp becomes an issue when gaming something gpu intensive, it very quickly reaches 80C then slowly towards 90C. I have a KOI cooling mod now and the temps are a bit lower, so I can game with no problems without the temps going above 80C.

Has anyone ever gotten a 780M to work with M15x? I know the 680M worked, so 780M not so different, eh? On the other hand, I've heard of 765M failures...
It works. The sound is a little tricky to enable but that works too in the end, only problems I noticed are that it gets a little hot and I could not manage to get the sound over hdmi to work.

Nice thread! I got 780M card (From Alienware 18) and wanna try with m15x. Plugged in the card, then i got 3 LED flashing. Tried with power drain, also same. Tried with 150w/240w/330w still flashing. Anything i missed here?
Thanks
Try to reseat it. It should have worked ok...at least until you boot into windows.

Here it is : link . But I see now that it's a different thing, his POSTS, yours does not.
In my case, the card used to POST but i had black screen so I used an external monitor, but after 2 minutes the screen froze and then it didn't even POST. I never figured out what the problem was.

I think I read somewhere of a video card that had the same issues, and it turned out that it wasn't completely dead. It still worked in sli as slave, but was not recognized as primary.

I had a new gtx 680m die on me in 3 days. Then I got a gtx 780m and it's working fine. I too tend to say it's bad luck.

No. Just unplug you laptop, remove your battery, perform a power drain, remove you mobo battery, then put it back on.
By the way, did you try to see if your old card works?

I'm sorry to hear that. The sound works if you follow the steps I wrote

By the way, did you flash your vbios? Did it reach stock clocks?

That's the code for a dead gpu. Happened to me with my gtx 680m. I hope you can salvage it. Try to reseat the card, try to remove the mobo battery....

Nice! Congrats for your new card. I managed to get the sound working. Disable the windows auto update and auto installation of drivers first, then uninstall the video driver and the IDT sound driver. Keep the IDT disabled in bios and boot in safe mode. Go to device manager and disable all you see about sound. Then enable IDT in bios and install the drivers for it. I don't remember if I did this in safe mode too. In the end, install the video drivers. From what I noticed, the problem is that even with IDT disabled in bios, there is a sound device in device manager(probably from the video card, and this interferes with the original sound device).
Let me know how it goes . You'll work it out in the end, don't worry.

I think on the dell version it was supposed to work without any issues. On the Clevo version...don't know.

Yea, pull out the center pin so it doesn't get limited to 180W. It won't charge your battery anymore though.

The exact thing happened to me on a 680m also. It only took 3 days in my case and I couldn't get it to work again ...I wonder what the problem was.

I'm glad it was nothing after all.
Btw, what video card do you have?

check: Alienware M17x R1, R2 and M15x LED Behavior Prior to Proceeding with No POST troubleshooting | Dell US for the error type you have. I'm sorry to say, but your video card might be dead,it happened to me too.
-
did you modify the drivers .inf file?
-
Do you have windows 7 or 8? If it's a clevo card, you should ask svl7 about a dell vbios flash, as kotek_2000 said.

Try to disable windows automatic update and windows automatic install of drivers, remove video card drivers, boot in safe mode, run a cc cleaner to make sure drivers are not installed. Boot normally into windows with the videocard that work to check that drivers are not installed and that they do not install, then disable integrated sound from bios and try the gtx 780m in windows safe mode. If THAT does not work, I don't know what else you can try.... a vbios flash maybe?

Try to disable the integrated audio from bios. I think this works for alienware m15x, not sure for the m6600.

A very clean glossy screen with maximum brightness...the colors are too rich for you not to love it.

It all depends on how much you are willing to spend. Check for the video card in the first place, as it tends to be the bottleneck in most cases.

It's like an endurance test. May the best laptop win!

I'm thinking to upgrade my m15x to win8 as well. How did you guys install all the drivers (graphic, wifi, bluetooth, etc.), and command center, fx software.
I gonna format everything and install the os so I need more info about the drivers whether it works or not.
I couldnt find any thing on google.
could you help me plz
thanks
Just go to dell support website, enter your laptop tag and you will see all the drivers you need. I'm almost 100% sure that you will not find windows 8 drivers, but the ones for win 7 work well on win8. I have windows 8 installed on my m15x for a few months now and like it, gaming is not affected in any way, I did not encounter any problems with it, it boots faster than windows 7.
If it's the first time you are reinstalling windows and you want everything to look the same as before, google: "restore the alienware look and feel"

The exact same thing happened to me about a year ago. The card was a paperweight , but the guy I bought it from agreed to change it.
