The 220W psu that I bought uses a 4 pin din connector, but I have a 4 pin din female to 5.5mmx2.5mm male connector that came with my 180W targus powers supply. So I'm just going to use that connector on my new power supply.

NVM I solved my own problem. Figured out that as long as the voltage is the same, I can use the ac adapter. Also I ended up finding a 220W adadpter on eBay that will work.

Hello I recently upgraded my MSI GX640 laptop with an AMD 7970m and Intel i7 920xm. I am currently using a 180W power supply, but it is not sufficing when I overclock my 920xm. When I overclock my 920xm to 3GHz on all threads and start gaming, my power supply will shut down and stop working until I unplug it from the wall and then plug it back in. My 7970m is also overclocked to 936/1500MHz. So I am thinking that I need an even more powerful power supply for my notebook.

The specs of my current power supply are the following:

Input: 100-240V ~ 50-60Hz x 2.5A

Output: 19V x 9.5A = 180W

Connector size: 5x2.5mm

I am looking at a power supply that has the following specs:

Input: 100-240V ~ 50-60Hz x 4A

Output: 19.5V x 11.8A = 230W

Connector size: 5x2.5mm

Wow I didn't even realize you can add heatsinks like that! I will be taking mine apart shortly and doing that as well as it should improve overclocking results substantially. What type of thermal paste/glue did you use?

Your just use double-sided thermal tape to keep the small heatsinks in place. I use arctic cooling's mx-3.

Hello I just wanted to share my experience with upgrading my MSI GX640 with a Dell 7970m ES flashed with the Clevo HM Enduro Off vbios. I have the card up and running nicely with an idle temp of around 38C at clocks of 300/150 with 0.825V. I did a lot of heatsink mods so that the 7970m would work properly with my laptop.

Also I overclocked it using ASUS GPU Tweak. I'm running it with a stable overclock of 1000/1400 @ 1.1V. I did a 3dMark 11 Basic Edition benchmark and got a system score of 6420 with a gpu score of 7355. Legacy ROM is the right bios option to boot a card with uefi vBios.

Can anybody explain why?

Maybe the 022 card has two different boot modes in the vbios? one for legacy and one for uefi, and if your bios prefers legacy, then the card will use its legacy mode. I have no idea if that's possible, but it's just a theory lol.

My 2 cents: I have bricked few cards flashing from 022 to 017 vbios, so I wouldn't advise you to do so.

Well as it turns out, The Dell 7970m that I had ordered came with a 022 vbios card. So it has a uefi vbios, which means my gx640 is not compatible with it at all. after I installed it, the screen would stay black and the laptop would not post. So there was no way to flash a different vbios. I'm probably just going to have to resell it.

OK so i just got my dell 7970m in the mail. On the back of the card it says that it came with the 022 vbios. Is it safe to flash to a different vbios (p1xxhm enduro disabled) with this card? Because I read somewhere that it is not because it came with the 022 vbios, which is uefi. Please help. I don't want to brick the card, and I am pretty sure that this vbios won't work in my gx640, but the clevo hm vbios will.

Edit: I ended up finding a couple posts about a guy with a 7970m that originally came with a 022 vbios, and he was able to flash 017 vbios successfully and it worked. I just hope the clevo hm vbios will work.

how do you change timings on a laptop?

Did you have to blind flash it? I have a feeling that I am going to run into the same problem with my GX640 and Dell HD 7970m

I'm not so sure Dell cards are as friendly with any other machines other than Dells and Alienware's. The Dell card has been proven to work with that Clevo vBIOS but in other systems.

Alright. Thanks for the reply. I'm really starting to get worried that this card isn't going to work in my laptop because it's a DELL card, but we'll see what happens. I'm glad that the clevo vbios works though. If I get a black screen on boot with the stock DELL vbios, then I will just attempt to blind flash to the clevo vbios to see if that will work. If i can't get a vbios to work, then I will just sell my card along with the x-bracket and screws.

Hi I`m not svl7 but I can confirm that Alienware m17x and m18x GPU Vbios doesn`t have Enduro enabled by default, so don`t worry about it.

Thank you for that post. I have been looking everywhere for this information. I currently have an MSI GX640 and I am about to (try) upgrade my graphics card to a Dell HD 7970M. I was just worried that the GPU wouldn't work because my laptop doesn't have Integrated Graphics Processing. I really hope that I can get this card to be fully functional though. I just hope that I can get the heatsink to fit properly on my GPU. It comes with the GPU spreader on the back of it, and I bought the screws to go with it for $15 on ebay. Hopefully this GPU spreader will be compatible with the heatsink in the GX640 with the new screws. This is going to be the first laptop GPU upgrade that I ever attempted, and I know that it's going to be a pain in the ass and cause a lot of headaches. If worst come to worst, I will just have to resell the card that I bought if it doesn't work. So far it has been confirmed working that a Clevo 7970m works in my laptop, but at the time I did not think that it would matter if I had a Dell or Clevo card. After doing a lot of research, I found out that there is difference. I hate impulse buying, but the dell card was just so much cheaper!
