NVIDIA Readying New Maxwell Based Mobile GPUs

It seems NVIDIA is getting to ready to release two new mobile Maxwell GPUs in Q2 2016, the GTX 970MX and GTX 980MX. With the company already dominating the high end notebook market and 14nm/16nm next generation GPUs on their way like Polaris, the timing of this release seems a little odd.

Both GPUs will be positioned as slightly more powerful than their existing GTX 970M and GTX 980M counterparts with increased CUDA cores, texture units, and clock speed while retaining the same TDP. In addition to the aforementioned, the 970MX has 56 ROPs vs 48 in the 970M while the 980M and 980MX have the same 64 ROPs.

WCCFTech created a table which shows the differences between the new GPUs and existing ones:

There's no word on what the price will be for these new cards or what notebooks will feature them but if I had to guess, I'd say the usual suspects like Alienware, Clevo, MSI and Asus will be among the first to have these ready.

Lot of guess work there in their tables...

Unlike BGA GPUs, MXM cards are not rated in TDP but rather TGP to include not only the core chip, but rather total board draw:

- The MXM GTX980M 8GB had a TGP of 103W, the BGA version a TDP of 85W

- The MXM GTX970M 6GB had a TGP of 80W, the BGA vesion a TDP of 62W

- The MXM GTX965M 4GB (old GM204 version) a TGP of 70W, the BGA version a TDP of 56W

- The new BGA GTX965M (GM206) has a TDP of only 50W, same as the old GTX960M

The currently only 125W (TGP) Maxwell MXM card is the GTX980 SLI variant used in the MSI GT80S....

Well considering their drivers in the last year or so seem to be one facepalm after another I dont know if itd be worth getting. Sadly theres not much competition these days :(

I agree with Brian, this is a little bit strange on timing. However they may feel they need just a "bump" in excitement over the current generation of mobile GPUs just until they release pascal so that sales dont waver too much. And seeing as it is the same hardware essentially it would be very cost effective for the slight increase of unlocking a little more than what was on the original.
