Brian could you link me to a 6970 11.4 review vs a 485m? Im a tad curious.

-Ash

There's no direct review yet but ichime posted his results on this forum in the R2 benchmarking thread with the 6970M + 11.4 Cats and his results are matching 485M. That's with an R2 no less, it should do better in an R3 + 2920xm.

Hey all ... Just ordered a R3 to replace my xps1730

gotta say .. dont think i paid enough attention this time .. i dont think its actually gunna be any better ... and yeah 6970 2gig option ticked here

You will see a considerable improvement in performance with the R3 vs the XPS 1730. What makes you think it wouldn't be any better? Welcome to the T|I forum!

TBH i have no real basis for that opinion ... i loved my 1730 to bits ... it got nicked .. and this is the replacement insurance ordered me

quite hard to find info on the r3's on the net .. this site seams to have the most informative out there ATM ..

things im a bit worried on ....

i have a g9 mouse with the soft touch coating ..... it wore off quite rapidly.. Hoping the dell wont have the same issue

And .. its kinda new hardware ... so hoping there isn't to much in teething issues

sorry if my comments seam ill informed ... Its more than likely because ATM i am :D

Hey Wayne, glad to have you on board, I am concerned about the quality and the durability of the new coating myself... I guess there is only one way to find out, there are owners of the laptop that carry it around a lot so the wear and tear of the rubber will have to show.

100% agree .. looking at benchmarks for vantage im feeling a bit better now ... i think best i ever got was 7500 in vantage ... these seam to do 12000 ish stock .... still nothing compared to the 20k you guys are getting with your crossfire machines... my old desktop only just cracked 20k .. and that was with 2x 9800gx2's

I noticed the display has a blue shift and needs correction. I adjusted mine to 6100K and now the colors are a bit better. Anyone else notice that?

Yeah I noticed that and had to adjust the display color settings to put it back to semi-normal, try plugging something into the HDMI in and it gets really bad on stock settings. Looks like a friggin smurf was murdered on your screen lol.

Can we get some more detail on that unlocked 6970m? color me ridiculously intrigued...

-Ash

EDIT: NVM, I used my latent google powers.

Wow, I seriously want a laptop with a "6990"m card in it now. I hope amd doesnt try cover it up and shut it all down. Yup, I might just be getting another laptop after this old clunker...

The screen is decent but when I switch back and forth between R2/R3 I see a pretty large difference between the two in the RGB LED's favor. If you check out notebokcheck's review of R3, you can see it's overall color gamut is noticeably less than rgb led and is even less than a Sony Vaio screen. It's close to a 13" MBP screen's color gamut so it's decent, definitely better than the crap Asus pushes out although that may change with the G74.

Comparison between Joebarchuck's "960" shaders 6970m with (780/1000)clocks: Imageshack - 100mhz.png

and ichime's "1120" shaders 6970m with (775/1000)clocks: Result

you can clearly see a difference of ~1400 points in GPU score...

also for higher clocks:

"960" shaders 6970m with (830/1075) clocks:Result

ichime's "1120" shaders 6970m with (825/1075) clocks: http://img38.imageshack.us/f/6970mm17xr2vantagegpu82.jpg/

Graphics Score of 14788 for the unlocked vs. Graphics Score of 13407.51 for the regular one(slighter higher clocks)

Well, I'm not that lucky :P I did pay about $580 for it and I'm sure future retail versions will be cheaper. Also, this could be the 6990M Eurocom mentioned in an e-mail to someone, though I think a card with that name should be based of a desktop 6950 (which BTW consumes less power than a GTX 560 - what the GTX 485M is based off of).

Let's call this card, the 6970M XT?

EDIT: BTW Brian, what games are you going to test for your R3 review?
