MSI 1761 upgrade mobo to 1763

Hello,

would it be possible to upgrade motherboard in MSI GT783 (1761) to GT70(1763) ?

Found the boards for about 300USD, seems a nice upgrade from sandy bridge to haswell. (this will also allow me to upgrade GTX770M to 980M I guess)

I'm just not sure if it will fit the chassis. Anyone tried ? - no pobelm with USB ports placement etc ?

Cassis of both GT780 and GT70 look the same, but there might be some minor differences, that's why I'm asking...

This is not so easy ... technically the MS-1763 / 16F4 motherboard fits into the MS-1761 barebone, but only with a Dremel. For the Haswell generation MSI has placed 2 Displaysports instead of the eSATA port on the mainboard.

Furthermore, you need the following attachments:

Power sensor board including data cable = about $ 60-100

HDD1 board MS-1763A / MS 16F4A = about $ 40

HDD2 board MS-1763C / MS 16F4C = about $ 60

Processor: i7-4700MQ = approx $ 200

But the parts are very hard to find.

somewhat easier it is to go to the Ivy Bridge generation. There is the Motherboard from $130 and there have also the eSATA Port (esteem, there are also versions with a DisplayPort.). The attachments are also needed, but to get something cheaper. You can also use your Sandy Bridge CPU with the MS-16F3. Recently, I myself have performed such an upgrade from MS-16F2 to MS-16F3 and I paid about $ 250 for everything.

Sandy bridge cpu works on that motherboard ?

Anyway, I want to replace CPU as well, so your suggestion would allow me to go for 3rd gen ?

Would it be enough and will I encounter any problems when replacing GPU for GTX980M ? (980M doesnt POST on 16F2/1761 boards, 970M does.)

2670qm is bottleneck for GTX970M, yet alone for 980M...

Dremel is no problem for me, but I'm concerned about the data cable and power board - the one from 1761 doesnt work ?

Also, what about the HDD boards ? You cannot use regular 2.5" HDD ?

Well I found some used 3rd gen laptops for about 400-500eur. yeah, twice the price than an upgrade, but I'll have a lots of spare parts, LCD, keyboard, etc.

Yes, the Sandy Bridge i7-2670QM works with the MS-16F3 or MS-1762 Motherboard, this i have tested. Because MSI has released the first GT60/GT70 Models with this i7. I´ve also tested an i5-2410M, this CPU don´t work with both Motherboards.

As for the upgrade to GTX9 ** M, since I can not help you because I just know it works the GTX970M, but there are probably different VBIOS version of the Clevo cards, run some, others do not. So it has confirmed my friend from Germany MSI forum.

Your Power Sensor Board of the GT70 has more pins, as well as the motherboard. You get the device still on the old board, but must it waive the remaining keys. I myself have e.g. a long time operated a GT70 sensor board at an MS-16F2 Motherboard (10 vs 16 pin). The reason for this is added by Optimus, because the GT70 changes the power button color, depending on which GPU is active.

The same applies to the HDD1 Board (besides the GPU), the MS-1761 has fewer pins as in the MS-1762 because it also mSATA SSDs can operate via adapter from the GT70. The Board has HDD2 the MS-1761 yet the connection for the two right-hand USB, this is the MS-1762 now on the mainboard itself. The HDD2 Board can be compatible, it have same Pins, but i´ve tested my old HDD2 Board from the MS-16F2 and another MS-1761 HDD2 Board, both don´t work.

btw:

MS-16F2 = MS-1761

MS-16F3 = MS-1762

MS-16F4 = MS-1763

Interesting!

While I realize that this is somewhat of an hijack, would you happen to know what parts are needed (assuming its even possible) to upgrade MSI 1762 (62-033) 680M (MSI GT70 Barebones) [EC = 1762EG62.401, Bios = E1762IG6.3SU - .30U] to something that is compatible with GeForce 980m?

Right now the only MSI computers that are sold with the 980M are the GT72 and the GT80, seeing as the GT80 uses two GPUs I am going to assume that its guts\mainboard wont fit the MSI 1762 (GT70) that I have, but would the GT72? and would I also still require a GT72 power sensor board (with data cable), hdd1 board, hdd2 board (as well as a Gen4 cpu as last that I have checked this computer used a BGA type CPU (that is soldered directly into the motherboard (embedded) unlike the MSI 1762 that uses PGA which is replaceable type of CPU(s))?

Medion sold the MS-1763 with a GTX980M MEDION Erazer X7835 MD99062 17,3" FHD, Intel Core i7, 16GB, 1000GB + 256GB SSD, NVIIDA GeForce GTX 980M, Win8.1 bei notebooksbilliger.de and MSI sold the GT60 also with a GTX980M MSI Global GT60 2QE Dominator Pro 4K Edition

All Parts of the GT72 are not compatible with the GT70. Only the GPU, RAM & HDD can be work. The Chase (MS-1781) is complete different.

I think that the GTX980M works with the MS-1762, when you use the 51x Bios.

Thank you for the update!

I have checked over at The Official MSI GT60/70 970m/980m Upgrade Thread | NotebookReview and after reading the entire 62 pages of that post I found that a single user (at about page 16), named "Dgs6686" attempted to install the 970M in his MS-1762, his last post have a screenshot of his computer detecting that card as "VGA standard adapter" and he never posted after, I don't know if he managed to get the card fully working and recognized by windows and due to that lost interest in posting or if he failed to achieve working 970m and gave up.

I believe that there is a huge chance that you are right about the MS-1762 supporting the GTX980M with 51x bios, and that the above mentioned person probably got it working, but I do not know at this stage.

Regarding that 51x bios, I understand that sharing unlocked bios is disallowed as it does disservice to its unlocker (svet from official forums), however, would you happen to know where can I get the locked version? and are there more than one variation of that bios? and.... can I upgrade from .30 directly to 51x? (I have 3rd gen cpu)

Interesting and helpful, thank you!

I will be contacting Svet to find out if I can get that bios version for my laptop =)

Thank you so much!

p.s.

For any one reading this in the future, I have found a MS-16F3 user that have updated successfully to the 970M using a ".51X" bios update from Svet.

//will update when I have some results ... which might take a few months depending on shipping and stock :x

The 51x is not from svet, it´s from MSI. Here you have a big Thread with many MS-16F3 + GTX9**M User: The Official MSI GT60/70 970m/980m Upgrade Thread | Page 58 | NotebookReview

Thank you, I just spend a few hours reading all 63 pages of this thread, at page 12 some guy with my system (MS-1762) actually joins the discussion as he tried to get 970m to work on his computer but he never posted the end results, I am going to assume that he did that as he got it to work and didn't need any further help.

What I couldn't figure out is where to get the .51X for the MS-1762 and which version of the 980M is\are supported by my laptop (am I redistricted to only MSI branded 980M or will Clevo\Dell work too?)

Additionally, while the bios was made by MSI, I would still need Svet to unlock it for the sake of altering to advance boot related settings in order to boot into Windows 8 or 7 (right?O_o)

Again, many thanks iTzZent! <3

Edit:

Seeing as all MS-16F3 owners that upgrade to the 970M used Clevo I am going to assume that Clevo will work for my MS-1762 due to the great resemblance between the two systems.

Specifically speaking I am talking about this 970M:

My plan is actually to get the Clevo 980M from here:

Hey ItzZent,

I spoke with Svet, he says that both bios versions of .51X and .71X are avilable for either 16F3 system or 1762 but only to a retail one, since my system is barebone applying this bios version to it would be "cross flashing", and should I opt to do that then I am doing it at my own risk.

Would you happen to know anyone that have flashed either .51X or .71X on a barebone 1762 system?

Awesome, just one last question about that "/x" parameter, do you use the msi flash tool to create bootable usb thumb drive for the purpose of flashing a new bios? that's what I did when I moved from .30S to .30U, but I don't recall ever seeing "/x" show up (either in instructions or otherwise)

you flash under DOS by using AFUDOS.exe with the following parameter : AFUDOS.exe E1762IMS.51X /p /b /n /k /r /x

You can also use the Windows Version AFUWINx64.exe with the following parameter: afuwinx64.exe E1762IMS.51X /p /b /n /k /r /x /shutdown

see in my attachment. This is the MS-1762 51x Bios with both Versions incl. the T24 EC Firmware, this you must also flash. You must only edit the flash.bat files to add the /x parameter.

For the EC Firmware you must use : ENEF_030 /FLASH -E -B34c (nameofthefirmware) (here you must add the -E parameter!)
