Guest
Eurocom is who I have been communicating with and offered to assist with Alienware non-Optimus testing. I directed them here and to NBR. I am still waiting for them to respond to that offer.I think reaching out to @Prema and @svl7 makes good sense. In fact, I had assumed someone had already done that. Rather than waiting for NVIDIA, they may be able to compare the vBIOS to 780M and 880M and figure out what needs to be flipped or deleted to make a vBIOS that we already have work. I cannot imagine trying to do anything meaningful without their assistance. We already know that anything we get from NVIDIA, Alienware or Clevo is going to be messed up in one way or another.I really want this to work, too. 980M SLI is the only thing keeping me interested in laptops at this point. I don't want to go back to desktop gaming and benching if I don't have to. Almost everything available for purchase that is new seems to be an unimpressive BGA pile of dog crap. The only exception seems to be the screwed up Haswell-powered Clevos that have crappy CPU heat sinks that cause overheating like a blast furnace and don't overclock worth a damn.I would consider buying a Eurocom Panther (P570WM) but if they are just selling out remaining stock and Clevo has formally discontinued the manufacture of it, that leaves me in a very uncomfortable spot paying $5,000 for something obsolete that may not have service parts available in a year or two. Rather than buy something that cannot be maintained, it would be a lot smarter to spend the same money building something. Even spending that on a new Area-51 would make more sense than buying a discontinued laptop.

Very reasonable theory from @technos, not removed but changed. Meaning a BIOS upgrade is required for AW17/18 users.M17xR3/Unlocked BIOS has these options available. Here is my theory on that: My answer as to why it won't work in our systems? nVidia decided to remove optimus components from the vBIOS. The M18x uses a multiplexor switch to alternate between the iGPU and the dGPU. The M17x uses a muxless switch where the dGPU passes through the iGPU to drive the display. Both AMD and nVidia cards have coding in the vBIOS to handle these types of switches. If nVidia omitted that code from the vBIOS, the 980M will never work, as it will have no idea how to handle the switch. I can't believe nVidia decided to remove one of their redeeming (and very successful) features from their 980M HDMI bypasses the LVDS or eDP connector altogether, which is why it would work. Mickyd1234
Optimus is listed under 'Features' GeForce GTX 980M | Features | GeForce That is weird. When I followed your link it said so on the right of the page. Then I refreshed it and they all changed to icons, with optimus not there any more (along with it missing from the list on the left) .I was looking at the original page I posted to, I thought...Jeez, this is confusing

Guest
Will see in a little while, I suppose. No reason to feel compelled to hurry up and do anything. My gosh, with 780M there is no reason to have any kind of sense of urgency and 980M is still new. Just let the little panty-waisted Ultrabook jockeys have some fun on the stage for a little while with their turd HQ BGA abortions. They won't get many chances to feel good about their wimpy machines. They'll get their teeth knocked out soon enough. Like Serious Sam always said, "It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye." @LVNeptune - exactly the same people I have been communicating with and waiting to hear back on the offer to help with testing. Guest
Hey, 680M is still an awesome mobile GPU... better than almost everything else. 680M > 780M > 980M... your GPU would be the envy of millions. I didn't count 880M because it's defective and worthless.
