DarkSunOne
Hello there, I own the MSI GX660r with 1st gen Intel Core i7 and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD5870 graphics Card, I allready overclocked my Graphic Card at 820Mhz GPU Speed, and Overvolted it to 1,10V. Seems to run smooth so far. But my Question is, Is it possible to get a new CPU in the GX660r? Something like an i5 3th or 4th gen.? an a better graphic card? i allready read some thing about this, for example that this is no possible with an Nvidia card. but still possibly with an similar ati card like a card from the 6xxx series. Sorry for my bad English i am from Austria
Bugii
best cpu you can get is i7 1st gen. Only 1st gen cpus fit into motherboard.GPU, ... I've tested with GTX 675M, GTX 770M and HD7970M - all working fine.So yes, it IS possible with nvidia card. I've tested exactly on MSI GX660 - stock card was HD5870M

DarkSunOne
Hello, Thanx for the reply. The CPU, 1. okey, so its not possibly or better said its not worth to by an Intel over first Generation into my gx660? :/ 2. Is it worth to upgrade from an slower i7 1st gen to a 'faster' i7 1st gen? The GPU. So its realy possible to insert a nvidia card Boot up install the right driver and everything works? *-* And whats with the temp. Control fan and so in, even HDMI will work after upgrading to an nvidia card? THX in advance for reply

THX in advance for reply it is not possible to get anything else than 1st gen i-core CPU working - 2nd gen has different socket. Fastest you can get is 920XM - however I'm not sure if it's worth the price. I dont think it is, you should be fine with the i5 460M you got right now. Yes you can get nvidia working without problems. I have tested: GTX 560M(this is not an upgrade to your current gpu) GTX 675M, GTX 770M (clevo version) and AMD HD7970M All of them wokring fine - yes exactly in gx660R. The only thng youwill need, is to buy or make a heatsink. You can use any of the GT60/GT70 series - they are the same. 675M ~75-80C HDMI depends on vbios - works with dell vbios doesnt work with msi vbios. (dell card tested) 770M ~65-70C HDMI works 7970M temps same as 675M, didnt have a chance to test HDMI.

Bugii
can you also upgrade the msi gx660 without R?Sure. The only difference is RAID. In fact, you can flash GX660R BIOS to GX660 and you will get the option to configure RAID.
sliderfra
I'm currently with the i7 720QM ^^What exactly do you mean with heatsink? (sorry my english is a little bit buggy ^^), do you mean a cooling plate?Okay and where can i buy the GTX 770M?920XM is definitely a good upgrade compared to 720qm. I had one one a GX660 and with unlocked bios (and thottlestop) I ran rock stable @ 3.36Ghz on 4 core (140 x 24). So nearly twice as much as 1.73ghz of 720qm on 4 core.At that time, CPU performance was as good as 3630qm.Now, problem is to get a 920xm for a decent price. In my opinion, if you can get one for less than 150$/€, go for it. Otherwise, sell your gx660 and get a gt60/70 with Ivy / Haswell.Plus the gx660 works with 970m gtx (end of 1st post):The Official MSI GT60/70 970m/980m Upgrade Thread | NotebookReviewSo a 920xm (150$) + 970m gtx (450$) = roughly 600$ (+40$ for 180w PSU if you don't have one already).Big investment! A 2nd hand GT60 with 870m + 4700mq can be found for around 700$ so I let you be the judge of that.

Coz my cpu is 920xm and i read that the regular adapter wont have enough power for both 920xm and 7970m, especially under load. Have you tried the new 970m? albeit the high price; it only has 81watt tdp with very substantial performance differences against 675m and 7970m, but i keep worrying bout the regular power adapter wont be sufficient.thanks
Bloetschkopf
Where You come from? You can use all Nvidia GPU`S,the MS-16F1 is the most compatible Barebone.I tested it with GTX 460M,GTX 560M,GTX570M,GTX 580M,GTX 670MX,GTX 675MX,GTX 680M,GTX 970M,K3000M,K5000M.All Series like Fermi,Kepler and Maxwell are working in this Barebone, only the Heatsink are different.I testetd last Week a Quadro K3000M and overclocked K5000M from Dell without Problems.http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/10260281

Bloetschkopf
I have test all of them in a GX660.GTX 980M and Qadro K4000M must also work.If You use GTX 570M up to GTX 980M you Need a 180W Power Supply, some Peple use a modified 230W from Dell. Sleippnir
According to The Official MSI GT60/70 970m/980m Upgrade Thread | NotebookReviewYou should be able to upgrade to the 970m (or even the 980m if you wish to splurge) as long as you are brave enough to flash the vBios
Bloetschkopf
HelloThe GX660R works with all Nvidia GPU`sGTX 460M,GTX 560M same Heatsink(Cooler Plate)GTX 570M,GTX 580M,GTX 670M,GTX 675M,Quadro xxxxM,same HeatsinkGTX 670MX,GTX 675MX,GTX 680MX,GTX 680M,GTX 780M,GTX 880M,and Quadro KxxxxM Cards, same Heatsink.GTX 970M,GTX 980M ,same Heatsink or modified from Kepler.I tried the most of this Cards by myself, some Cards need a modified Driver INF because there no MSI Vbios. The most Performance for your Money you get with a GTX MX or a Quadro Card, this Cards are cheaper than GTX 680M etc. This Cards are very downclocked,my K5000M make overclocked at 1GHz the Power of a GTX 880M with 8370 Points GPU in 3Dmark11 with OC Vbios. My K4100M also work with 7000 Points GPU in 3Dmark11 with OC Vbios. And for the Kepler Cards you can use a cheap Heatsink from a GTX 460M,GTX 560M,u must modify it a little.K5000M you find here:NVIDIA QUADRO K5000M 4GB GDDR5 MXM 3.0 DELL | eBay
msigx
Hello. I am new to this forum. I know that motherboard of MSI GX640/740 (which I have) is different than GX660. But still is it compatible with GTX 970M/980M ? I assume that the notebooks, are rather similar due to BIOS/UEFI and same generation, but still (other motherboard), can be differences. I will have Dell K4100M, so I will check it out, but nobody give answer if maxwell cards is working here. K5000M/680M works in MSI so I have high hopes, but still can't tell anything. Because it could be a good upgrade machine still. I have it for little money, and if I can grab some GTX 970M for 300$, I would have it for about 500$ (with selling of HD5870M and i5, because I replace it with 920XM i7). Still I will do some mods with cooling, to cool it down.

When i'm playing i'm around 75 degrees Celsius with an agressive fan. Tried to overclock but temps easily goes in the low 90's. Had you an external cooler ? What is the secret behind those crazy overclock ? Thanks !

In the Picture You can see the different Heatpipes,Yours is the bottem left. You need normaly the top right, there You can see the Different. The Marks are for Changing Heatpipes for GTX 980M.
