Alienware 17 "Black Screen after closing and reopening Lid"

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I really need help, I recently updated my Nvidia drivers from 311.48 to the newest Nvidia drivers 327.23. After doing this, I would get no display on my LCD after closing and reopening my lid. I can only get a display again by doing a hard reset by powering off the laptop and turning it back on.

I also tried other drivers but I have the same issue. The only Nvidia drivers that don't cause this issue is the older 311.48 drivers. I am hoping you guys can help because I don't want to be stuck with outdated drivers forever...

If it helps, I am running a Nvidia 780m GPU.

Thanks for the help!

i'm having this problem. same alienware 17

a04 bios

with nvidia 327.23

revert back to dell stock nvidia problem is still there...

Problem at hand: Auto dim. After it hits a certain threshold on battery life (In this case, it seems to range to anything from 30-50%, which is ridiculous), the monitor gets extremely dim, and my USB ports get disabled. In order to restore normal functionality, I have to plug in the power cord.

I have the same issue. The screen stays black after opening the lid when i close it to put it in sleep mode.I have the amd radeon hd 6870m card with updated drivers. When it goes to sleep without closing lid screen comes back on.Wonder if it a hardware issue because the compute still acts like everything is operational even though the screen wont come back on.

I have the same issue and found a way around. Kinda. It will save you the hard reset:

Set up the computer to go to sleep whenever you close the lid in battery mode. Now, if you're plugged into the power supply and open it, if the screen remains black (but the computer is actually awake, as you can see/hear by the HDD activity lights, give it a couple of seconds, then unplug it from the power supply and close it again. It will go to sleep again. Reopen it as soon as it is off, and the screen should light again. Plug it back into the power supply.

Works every time for me: seems to "reset" the screen somehow. You may find better settings for plugged/unplugged maybe, this just happens to work for mine.

Still, this isn't the way it's supposed to be!!! Especially on a 2000€+ machine!
