Lenovo Y410p / Y510p - unlocked BIOS / wlan whitelist mod / vbios mod

Hoping to try this fix later today. The wifi problems in this laptop are driving my wife crazy and I'd like it to be working for her birthday this week![/quote

If you're using 2230 adapter google this "Wireless_17.14.0_De164" and download. This is the latest driver (only driver not the shite software which has its own problems) for this adapter from intel.

Confirmed this solution still works on the Y510p laptop. Allowed me to use the new Intel 7260 AC wireless card. Thank you!

I had some problems with downgrading to 2.07 BIOS. I had to go into the BIOS settings and enable Back Flash

I also had trouble with booting from USB. Also had to change BIOS settings to legacy boot mode before it would work.

Maybe the things stated above are obvious but to a novice like myself it was something I didn't know which might be helpful to add.

Thanks, I really need this Bios

For those who don't like the restrictions Lenovo put on their system, here's a BIOS mod that will get you back at least some of the freedom you should have over your own hardware.

Features:

  • WLAN card whitelist removed, any (hardware-wise compatible) card should now work
  • hidden BIOS menus unlocked
  • VBIOS tweaked for more performance and better tuning possibilities

Keep in mind that not necessarily all of the BIOS options available with this mod will be fully functional, so use the new available settings with care.

If you're unsure about something don't change it and ask here, someone might be able to help.

Available for v1.07 / v1.09 / v1.10 and v3.05.

v2.04 and v2.07 added (only whitelist removal as for now)

If you have a different BIOS (or more specific, a BIOS newer than 3.05) I will need a copy of it in order to make it work for your system.

Instructions for flashing the modified BIOS v3.05:

You need a USB stick prepared to run DOS, here is a guide you can follow in case you don't know how to do this:

Guide by @StamatisX - thanks!

>>> Before continuing make sure the AC adapter is connected to your laptop and your battery has at least 20% charge remaining. <<<

  • (0) - NOTE: This step is Only necessary if your system isn't already using BIOS v3.05
Update to the official v3.05 BIOS provided by Lenovo
    .
  • (1) - Create a backup of your own BIOS (now v3.05) by using this tool.
Extract the files and run the included .bat file from an admin command prompt.
    .
  • (2) - Download the files for the v3.05 mod, put the files of folder [1] to the root of your prepared USB DOS stick.
Let the BiosFixer prepare your BIOS for flashing by drag and dropping your backup file on it. Put the created "v305mod.bin" file to the root of your USB DOS drive as well.
    .
  • (3) - Now you need to downgrade the firmware back to v2.07 in order to flash the mod.
    .
  • (4) - Boot from your USB DOS drive, when you see the command prompt type BIOS and hit enter. Wait until the BIOS is flashed (you can safely ignore warnings about non-existing regions).
    .
  • (5) - Once the BIOS flash completed with no errors, type EC and hit enter. Wait until the EC is flashed. Then reboot.
    .
  • (6) - Go to the BIOS setup menu, load the default settings, apply and reboot.
Done. In case you're using an ultra bay GPU follow the instructions in post #2 and flash the vbios..

NOTE: It's crucial that you flash both, BIOS and EC. Having different EC and BIOS versions can in certain situations lead to issues.

IMPORTANT: If you want to go back to stock v3.05 you can do that easily by simply using the official update from Lenovo. That's it, nothing additional required in this case.

Old instructions for users with v1.07 / v1.09 / v1.10 or v2.04 / v2.07 who for some reasons don't want to update to v3.05:

  • Create a backup of your own BIOS by using this tool.
The archive contains the files of the program and a .bat file that will create a backup of your BIOS. You need to call the .bat file from an admin command prompt.
Don't delete your backup file, you will need it in case you want to go back to the stock BIOS some times. Also don't share it since it contains your personal Windows key including activation.
    .
  • Download the attached BiosFixer, simply drag and drop your BIOS backup on it and it will create your personal mod for you.
    .
  • Flash the modified file with the tool from the first step, use the command below:
    fptw64 -f v1xxMod.bin -bios

    .

  • Wait for the flash process to finish, if you don't get an error reboot. (You can safely ignore warnings about non-existing regions).
    .

Is this still a current working method? Or is there an update to this? My y510p was working fine, I could get the cards to run at a stable 99% whenever I ran games ect. I swapped out the HDD and reinstalled windows, now they only run at 80% max and it's very jittery. Is there any chance this would help me? I just want smooth cards, as I've dropped a good 10fps since the fresh install.

If not this, can anyone recommend anything else that might help?

Guys, I need help, like bad. I changed a setting and my y410p will just power on to a black screen now. I tried to recover again by using the mash F2 + 8 right + 4 down + 4 enter trick and that does not work this time.

I tried to put my stock BIOS on a USB stick and hold down Fn + B while powering up and that doesn't do anything either.

Anyone know how to recover from a bad settings? I desoldered what looked like the CMOS battery (it's right underneath the palm rest and soldered onto the motherboard and is flat, round and labeled with + and - on two prongs) and I'm just letting it sit there for a while, I hope that clears the settings.

Hi, just wondering if desoldering the battery cleared the BIOS settings? I'm in the same situation you were in. Thanks!

Edit: OK do I dug deep into this thread and found a couple people desoldering the CMOS battery but never replying back, I'll take it as a good sign and get at this when I get home tonight.

As the computer starts, strike F2 then F9 then Enter key then F10. Let me know how it goes. Good Luck!

It boots for two seconds then shuts down and then repeats. I changed a wrong setting and now that what it does. That's why I need to remove the battery. This weekend I'll get the battery removed and will report back later.

Do you think you could try this method?

HOW TO RESET CMOS EASILY AND QUICKLY Y510P

If your system no longer boots due to a BIOS setting change you can remove the back cover and remove both sticks of RAM. Underneath the RAM is 4 copper contacts. The two on the right side that are labeled JCMOS2 need to be connected while the computer is powered on. I know this sounds crazy, I thought I broke my laptop, but as soon as I made contact with the wires the system began to boot. I hope this helps everyone, because I thought I bricked my BIOS!

JKH

P.S. If someone can tell me how to fun the fans at 100% all the time that would be fantastic and how to lower the CPU VID without causing my computer to not boot!

Someone posted this earlier in this thread but no one seems to have verified that it works.

What setting did you change exactly?

What setting did you change exactly?

I initially changed a setting which caused the screen to go blank. Then in my wisdom I attempted to undo the change blind. I used the video walk through to count the key strokes but my count was off by 1 on one of the steps. I ended up hitting disable on some PCI express refresh?timer? setting. I looked up exactly where I messed up, can't remember exactly now. I can figure it out again if it would help.

I'll give this method a try. At this point its looking pretty hopeless at this point. I may have to get a used mobo to replace.

Did you try F2 F9 F10 blindly? F2 takes you to BIOS, F9 resets Bios to defaults with Enter key and F10 saves. Good luck!

P.S: Try to remember what did you change exactly in the BIOS?

Is there any chances that flashing modded bios will fix my sli (crashing-display stopped to ressponding and have recovered/ Device has been removed or hang) problem ??

Record your temps. Download Hwinfo, leave it minimized while gaming. Report the findings.

New poster, so please ignore my noobness

Read through about 60 or so of these posts. It seems like a lot of you have issue when overclocking. How stable is this on its own, without attempting over clocking? I am want to get a new wireless card, so that alone has me interested in this.

It will not fix your problem. Out of curiosity though, do you happen to have the modded ultra bay vbios flashed and just not the modded BIOS?
