Upgrading a GT780DX-277US (MS-1761) to a GTX780M

So I've been looking at this GTX780M on Ebay: Alienware M17X M18X VGA Upgrade KIT NEW Nvidia GTX 780M 4GB DDR5 MXM 3 0B | eBay

I took some photos of my current GPU/Heat sink that should be compatible with some thermal pads, maybe some grinding. See the pics here https://plus.google.com/photos/110917730069494928611/albums/5889213719355647601

The laptop is:

GT780DX Laptop

Model# MS-1761

PSN: GT780DX-277US-MB72678G75S7P

Bios: American Megatrends version: E1761IMS V1.0H (11/18/2011)

Current GPU: GTX570M

After reading a ton about MSI laptop GPU upgrades on this forum I am very confused on if this will work or not. I don't have any doubts the card will fit but will it boot is the question?

Just wonder if anyone has tried it yet or came across anyone? Its fairly expensive but if the consensus is that it "should" work I'll go ahead and try it out!

670mx, 675mx, 680mx do not post for the sandybridge gen msi notebooks. The reason is unknown, but it is something in the msi sandybridge gen and kepler gpu's. Now you're saying the 770m works in the 16f2, but 780m doesn't work? What the hell is going on msi???

I`m also curious if that card works becasue it is still based on Kepler !!! "

"The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M is a high-end DirectX 11-compatible graphics card for laptops. It is based on the Kepler GK106 chip, as the older GTX 670MX, but offers a higher core and memory clock rate and GPU Boost 2.0. The feature set is still identical."

I'm still torn between ordering a 780M and trying it out or a confirmed 770M. I could really use the 780M as I don't use it for gaming and my viz stuff really makes everything crawl. Plus, used for GPU rendering in octane for ex. it makes quite a difference.

Could maybe the 780M need more power? A bigger power brick would do the trick? Would I need to change the battery too? Or should I forget the 780M option completely?

Guys who tried 780M said it doesnt POST. It doesnt matter what acad do you have if it doesnt post.

It should run even on battery. For example I made GTX 580M working using 90W acad - however as soon as the card was stressed the acad led turned off and the laptop switched to battery mode. Thats why you need bigger acad - to supply enough power when the card is under load. However the system should boot using any acad.

TLDR. 780M doesnt post, ac adapter isn't problem here. If you are willing to try 780M anyway, get a different version - the one tested here on forums was Clevo I think - not sure though.

Ok, thanks for all the help. I decided I need the 780M and I'm gonna try to change the MB/CPU with a 1762 that apparently works fine with the 780M. It looks as if it's gonna be cheaper than a new whitebook with a 780M and I think it's also less wasteful as I can't think of a use for the old parts.

clevo version is confirmed to work. Dell card is not working, stuck on boot splash screen.
I will try this. Just ordered this gtx770m: New Nvidia GeForce GTX 770M 3GB DDR5 MXM 3.0 Type B for MSI Alienware | eBay Unsucessfully tried to upgrade from 570m to 670mx - but no luck - no post, no boot. If I get the 770m to work I'd be really happy as I still like my 1761 based Erazor X7815. Had a really good performance/price ratio and I do not think the CPU (Intel Core i7-2670QM) is an issue even with latest games as they just started to use all 4 cores... I'd expect at least x1.5 speed upgrade - however not more as I was able to OC the old beast to whooping 1600Mhz (800Mhz Base clock) with a modded bios. Will keep you posted... Anyway - I'm unsure what to do with the unlucky gtx670mx module. It was from a good seller at ebay and I think it is working (in general - not in my notebook). Any suggestions by luck ?

I really need help now. I've bought the GTX770M MXM module and was able to put it into my machine. I can boot into windows.

That is the good news.

That bad news is that I wasn't able to find a single driver that did install sucessfully. I needed to use the modded inf file of laptopvideo2go. That was to be expected. But the driver installation fails. I refitted the old card to check if it is a general issue of my system or the driver but with the old card I could install the drivers with the modded inf. I tried 331.93 and 331.82 both with modded inf.

I also tried drivers from dell and msi for laptops with gtx770m - they do not start to install. Yet to try one of those with modded inf.

I've enabled driver logging and this is the first "ERROR" I do see in the log:

65.342 | INFO: [NVI2UI.MainFrame] 1739@CMainFrame::FlushEvents : Property changed "pos" routed to "progressBar". 65.345 | ERROR: [NVI2.NVDevicePhase] 1589@CNVDevicePhase::InstallHelper : Device phase failure Exception {0x80070002 - Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden.}. 65.349 | ERROR: [NVI2.NVDevicePhase] 419@CNVDevicePhase::InvokePhase : COM error: Exception {0x80070002 - Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden.}. 65.352 | ERROR: [NVI2.NVInstaller] 2059@CNVInstaller::InternalPerformInstall : Package "Display.Driver" failed with error: Exception {0x80070002 - Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden.; File: PerformInstall.cpp; Line: 4003; Phase failure}. 2013-12-14 08:19:01.506 ( 65.359) | INFO: [system] 391@Nvidia::Logging::Logger::Logger : 2013-Dec-14 08:19:01 : Logging init OK. ANY HELP IS HIGHLY APPRECIATED. PRETTY PLEASE ?

modded inf is bad.

It happened to me as well.

Try different.

I'm using 331.65 drivers with modded inf from some older version (not the one for 331.65) simply download more of them and try.

Regarding the 675mx, sell it, that card wont work in MSI.

Bugii, try downloading 331.82 driver from nvidia and download these files I use. Inf

There is 2 files put them in these directories and try run the installer.

ListDevices.txt ----> C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\331.82\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\International

nvcvn.inf ----->C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\331.82\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver

ok... Got it working finally...

Someone at msi forums was so nice to provide a MSI gtx770m bios .I flashed it using -4 -5 -6 et voila...Card "rebranded" to msi - original nvidia driver (331.93) installed at once ...

Since I'm a german: "JUCHHUUUUUU !" (similar to maybe "Yeahhhhhhhhhhh !")

Hi everyone,

I wrote about my issue with my GT780DX and CLEVO GTX 770M inside here:

http://forum.techinferno.com/msi/4192-ms-16f2-w-gtx770m-need-vbios-please-help-6.html#post78162

Which one of you got the same laptop and/or same issue like me?

Could someone tell me what to do about it? It has to be something about power/power limit I guess...

ligrew, I have a MS-1761 model MSI (gt780dx), i have put a clevo GTX770M in it also. I also have trouble keeping the GPU usage high. Framerates will drop then come back up. I haven't tracked down the problem yet.

Some possible causes I'm looking into: CPU too slow, VBIOS issue

I am leaning towards my CPU, mostly since benchmarks like EVGA OC Scanner don't show this behavior and hold the GPU at 98% until the power limit is hit.

This is what it looks like while playing BF4:
