I didn't expect to see modded BIOS already to overclock those things. What GPU voltage are you running, and I assume 1000MHz is really 993MHz, or is the 780m not limited to 13mhz increments?

I'm surprised at the memory clocks. I assume your memory is running 1.5V, but when I start approaching that voltage with my 680m, my memory starts overheating and clocking worse even with the cooling pads replaced with copper shims. Even with overvolting the highest I have seen anyone get a 680m memory to is just under 5400, and you're at 5800 with no mods I assume.

Well I think this might mark needing to do more extreme mods to my 680m... (more capacitors).

Also your CPU physics scores are very low for 4.4ghz. I get over 10k at your clocks. Maybe it's the 1333 memory but that seems like a lot to be caused by memory.

Well done chief.

The memory plays a lot on the physics score - also the more quantity you get, the lower the physics score is (probably due to the bad timings/latencies of the 8gb ram) - Do you have any benchmark scores (3dmark11/Vantage) Khenglish ?

Hey Khenglish,

Yeh Svl7 and Prema have been assisting with initial vbios tweaking. I'm not too sure what the RAM MEM volts are running at. I assume 1.5V. Your pencil mod is cool! :Banane51:

Yeh I've never been great at getting my CPU clocks up or benching on the CPU. I guess my slow ram is hindering me quite a bit then.

Thanks for the info pau1ow.

Cheers. :)

This is my best vantage: http://www.3dmark.com/3dmv/4682745

3dm11 won't complete due to PSU shutdowns on the combined test with the memory overvolt despite a 330W psu. Working on a way to get the laptop to stop telling the PSU to turn off.

My memory could only do low 4600s with no modification.

@chiefule can you do some tests for me? I want to see how much impact the extra memory speed has on the performance at 1080P. So if you can, I'd like the following runs in 3dmark 11 extreme preset:

1. Stock clocks

2. Stock core, 1350 MHz memory

3. Stock core, 1450 MHz memory

4. 900 core, stock memory

5. 1ghz core, stock memory

6. Max core, stock memory

7. Stock core, Max memory OC

I know its a lot of runs so you can skip some if you don't have the time. Thanks man!

Hey Brian Champ,

Just running some testing on some vbios's with Marco atm. I'll run your tests inbetween as well. There may be some weird results due to random testing and not knowing the effects of what tweaking the vbios will bring ;)

1. Stock clocks

Core Clock set to 850Mhz and MEM set to 1250Mhz

2. Stock core, 1350 MHz memory

3. Stock core, 1450 MHz memory

4. 900 core, stock memory

5. 1ghz core, stock memory

6. Max core, stock memory

7. Stock core, Max memory OC

Just the same ones for reference from my post above for now:

Core Clock set to 850Mhz and MEM set to 1250Mhz

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/6592848

Core Clock set to 1000Mhz and MEM set to 1550Mhz

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/6593108

Miscellaneous benches lol :65:

Core Clock set to 990Mhz and MEM set to 1450Mhz

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/6599265

Sorry Champ! Benches will have to wait a bit. Still working with Marco to get things working right. Down-clocking throttling all over the place atm.

Cheers. :)

Yeah, my conclusion so far is that (unless the OEM vbios will be a lot different - which I bet it won't) the 780m with a stock vbios won't be able to beat a tweaked 680m, the card will downclock at high clocks.

I was thinking his GPU performance seemed a bit low for a 1/7th increase in core performance. It looks like maybe the power monitoring chip really does do something (bad) on the 780m, unlike the 680m. Hopefully this does not require physical mods like the desktop 680 does to circumvent.

I assume that a 680m BIOS will not work since the core VRM and power monitoring chip were changed?

Well, the 680m with an OEM vbios doesn't do better, rather worse. The 680m vbios won't work just like this, different vram for example.

Hope you (svl7) will sort this out for us (once again)! Must be frustrating to have such a powerful GPU and be unable to use up its full potential!

Newb question: is the 780M vbios much different than the 680M's ? Can't remember how long did it take to get the first unlocked vbios ? Or we got Saltius's (MSI Unlocked bios) at that time, which might have helped.

Cheers!

Haven't been here for a while! Unfortunately it looks like the 780m suffers from the same issue that the 680m did with anything but the MSI pre-release rom. I'm satisfied with my modded 4GB GTX 680m @915(980)/1125. But will definitely trade up once the issue gets resolved.

Yeah I will have a look at the throttle tonight myself I suppose - strange the firmware has changed significantly :( I also need to get hold of the modded vbioses!

i am curious, what is the power consumption of this little monster @1000 mHz Core/ 1450 Mhz Memory?

I will give you some proper numbers this weekend, regarding power consumption @ stock and possibly overclocked (if someone is kind enough to send me some tweaked vbios :P - I'm not naming anyone!)

So far it runs cool enough: 3dmark11stock.png

but still requires some better driver support I believe!
