[BIOS/vBIOS - MODS] Prema Mod™ & Stock

Hi Prema, I posted my notebook problem in notebookreview.com and got your reply to one of my posts. Since I haven’t seen you active in the P770ZM owners’ thread there for sometime, I am posting here:

I have a P770ZM with AMD 8970M GPU. The display brightness controls are not working. Control Center crashes everytime I open it. Even the Windows brightness controls are not available. I should also mention that the notebook BIOS doesn't detect the AMD card. The system and the GPU work fine though, except for the display brightness issue.

While trying to find a fix to the problem, I stumbled on this post. As you mentioned there that if the screen internal firmware can't interface with the EC then things like brightness control won’t work. I have an IPS panel (LP173WF4 SPD1) on my P770ZM. The current BIOS version of the system is 1.03.14 and EC version is 1.03.09 (latest). Even if I upgrade to the latest BIOS version 1.03.15, the EC version will remain unchanged and that won’t fix the problem.

Do you have any suggestion? Could you please provide an EC version update which can fix the brightness problem? Alternatively, it would also be a great help if you could tell what registry tweak needs to be done.

You need to edit your registry manually for brightens control to work (google) as this system was never officially offered with AMD GPUs and has no direct support for them.

Hi just flashed prema bios mod and wanted ask about this cool and silent fan profiles. I thought silent fan profile would be better but it is not really silent. So there is a way to change this without flashing prema bios again ?

Thanks in advance.

The cool profile will spin up the FANs earlier and higher with high temps.

The silent profile will spin up the FANs later and not go as high.

If your average CPU/GPU temps are above the "silent" versions trigger temp then using the "cool" version may be more quiet as FANs don't spin up and shut off all the time and will instead run constantly on low.

Hi Prema !

Why Clevo BIOS 970M -G for P771ZM does not work on the P771DM-G?

They made a slight MXM board change...

Ok, thanks. I did try finding the registry tweaks and tried them too, none of them fixed the problem. The registry fix that was mentioned in most places is the below one:

"Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000Next, go find:MD_EnableBrightnesslf2

KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2

Set both to 0. Reboot."

MD_EnableBrightnesslf2 key was not there by default, so I added it myself. It should actually be KMD instead of MD. I have tried both, by the way.

I was quite hopeful that this would solve the problem, but unfortunately it didn't. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

I bought a Avell Titanium G1746 V3X Fire that is a Clevo P671RG-G. As I saw on Prema Mod website, there is no P6XXRE firmwares for it, just P6XXSG and P6XXSE models.

Since mine uses a different chipset (HM170), different processor (Skylake 6820HK), I assume that the SG/SE versions will brick my device.

Considering so, is there any way I can help? I have software / hardware rev. engineering skills (not bottom to the BIOS level, but I already did driver level hacks).

Control center and brightness works with older AMD drivers on the P7XXZM with 8970M, I'm not sure which driver versions tho as I don't use it. The brightness can be changed in catalyst control center.

I am using driver 13.12 at the moment. I have tried the latest drivers and a driver version older to 13.12 as well. If you happen to recall the driver version you are referring to, kindly let me know.

By the way, Control Center (Hotkey) utility crashes every time I open it mainly due to the display brightness problem as it gives an error about brightness.dll. At least I would want to use the other functionalities of the Control Center. Do you have any suggestions to make the utility run?

AMD Catalyst Control Center changes brightness and contrast at software level apparently. Even when I set the contrast to 0 in CCC, I can still feel the glare because the backlight is just too strong. Also, the image quality goes down.

Dear Prema, is there any chance we'll see a custom bios for the N150RD (Eurocom Shark 5) at some point?

I'm asking because i've noticed that the bios has some very conservative throttling settings regarding the CPU when the GPU is in use(the CPU current limit all of a sudden is lowered to like 10A). Power draw at the wall has never gone over 105Watts at any point, and all the temperatures are very good so it's sad to see the CPU thottling down even below the base clock when there is no reason to from a hardware point of view. Apart from that I suppose all those other tasty customisation modifications you do wouldn't hurt either :)

Wouldn't at all mind making a donation for such a bios:)

I recently flashed my Bios in order to get the gtx980m working in my laptop.

Now, shortly after booting, fans will blow with full power, and the num, caps, and scroll lock lights keep flashing including the beep sound of a critical battery. After 12 times, the computer shuts down.

After flashing, I didn't disconnect the PSU for about 30 sec (didn't see that in the readme).

Prema wrote in another thread to the same problem, that reflashing the mod will reset the EC and may help. But my fear is, that it will shutdown before flashing is finished and this way brick my notebook.

How long will it take and could it be that this emergency shutdown is disabled while flashing?

I hope for a quick response as my notebook is unusuable right now and I need it for work.

I currently have a clevo w350stq. The fan jumping to full on and then staying that way was very annoying, especially in work environments as it forced me to suspend my laptop to get it to shut up. So HUGE thanks for putting out a bios that isn't so crazy about the HD getting a little hot. You saved me, seriously. Now I'm looking to buy the https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/lafiteII/ and it appears to have the same problem. A shitty fan profile which means the fan doens't come on slowely, just jumps from off to full on all the time. Now I was wondering, is there any chance you're going to put out a similar fix. Or maybe I could even try myself? I use Arch Linux and happen to know quite a bit about laptops. BIOS modding is another level of course, that's why I'm asking.

Thanks again for the bios I'm using on my current laptop! ~AlexTes.

Hello guys, first of all thanks to Prema for your help. I just flashed this bios P6xxSE_39_310_PM_v2 on my laptop, model Z7M-i78172D1, with a motherboard p65_p67sa.

Actually looks that everything works fine, but in Windows 10 I can't see and select my nVidia GTX965m. There is an option in the BIOS to activate?

Thanks in advance, Bride

Hello all :D

I have some noob general questions before I go ahead with my first ever bios update. Please if any of you can help me with these:

1. Do you have to leave the battery attached as well, not only the PSU?

2. If so, then when it says "disconnect the PSU for 30 seconds" at the end of the process, do you also have to take the battery out and then put it back in?

3. What mode do you have to select in Rufus when creating the bootable stick? MS-Dos or FreeDos?

4. I disabled Intel Anti Theft technology but I don't know how to disable UEFI. I am inclined to think that my motherboard doesn't support it or something. Is that a mandatory step? to disable it I mean

5. Does it matter if you use an USB 2.0 or 3.0 port when you boot from the flash drive?

I appreciate any responses before I build up the courage to go ahead with the update :D I know, I know, I'm a pu$$*

Avell is one of my "Prema Mod Partner Team" Shops, write them a mail and ask them for the BIOS, that way you will get it sooner (once its ready) than the regular "public version".

It may help to reset the CMOS battery (below the keyboard):

1. Unplug the PSU (Power Supply Unit/ AC Adapter)

2. Remove the Battery

3. Remove the small CMOS Battery cable for about 30 seconds

@Prema

Do you know how to hardware mod a 980M into 980M-G?

You will have to physically change two resistor on the MXM board...more than that I can't tell you...but if you check some posts done by Clyde you'll get a better picture.

The BIOS or EC don't touch anything regarding AMD, you may turn your attention towards the AMD driver...

Well the P6xxSE (GTX970M) BIOS is NOT for P6xxSA (GTX965M)...I haven't made a Mod for it either...sorry.

1: Yes (it works without if don't have a battery, but it's not really advised to flash without battery)

2: No leave the battery in. This step is only to "reset the EC Firmware"

3: MS-DOS, but if you have W10 then free-dos (as MS stopped including the required DOS files)

4: Its in the "boot" section options. If you don't disable it you can't boot from Legacy USB

5: USB 2.0 is preferred, but both work

Hello Prema.

Is there a new BIOS for the Clevo P771DM-G that improves the long boot times that I get with this unit. I posted a video bellow to show just how long it takes from when I press the power button till the "Style Note" logo comes on.

I've fixed it for the Mod, not sure if a stock BIOS has it fixed, too.

Hi Prema! =)

1) You have some info about rework GTX 980M(MSI) to G-SYNC version? I looked Clyde messages and dont find this...

2) I have MSI GT72 6QE at GTX980M 4GB (84.04.48.00.2A). You can make Bios for me?

P.S. Sorry my bad Eng!

MSI_980M_4GB_84.04.48.00.2A_NOGS.zip

You can't do that with a vBIOS, you need to change the hardware...like here:

Thanks. I know about hw mod and find this post, but i dont find resistor combinations for 980M rework. Maybe, just as on g-sync version.

vBIOS: Sorry, i mean vbios for my 980M, not for crossflash to g-sync =)
