You're right. But if I clockdown 3632 it should be more cool than 45W CPU, shouldn't it?

For sure, you will probably see about 0-5c difference but at the expense of 8x600mhz = 4.8Ghz total. Note that 45W quads operate restricted to 35-40W in our machines. That's why the load temps are tolerable. My 3360M hit 90C+ in prime same way the 3840QM does. The cooling mod was maybe about 5W total if I'm very lucky...

10 minutes for Prime95 test. Comparison for 2570p on the table vs lifted. Take a look on statistic version of data, clear 10C difference for CoreMax (90C vs 80C). :)

When put on the table and temps were near 90 there was 5000rpm. When lifted there was 4500rpm. It was on Smart HPFanControl mode. 5000rpms are the highest possible cause of fan mod.

Hour after test, there are average 38-41C temps but I have to admit today is rather cool in my room (less than 20C). During summer there will be something around 50-55C on average CPU temps :(

I decompressed the F.42 2570P bios using PhoenixTool finding a reasonable number of WWAN, WIFI and Bluetooth adapters shown below. This is as found in the BIOS except I filled in the bits in the brackets [] based on a Google search.

Unfortunately nobody has as yet successfully created a modified unwhitelisted bios. This is due to HP applying RSA protection.

<strike>So if you need a better card then consider a USB external one. Only *workable* solution that would allow newer/faster wifi (eg: 802.1ac) would be to get BPlus to manufacturer an interposer ribbon for installation between the systemboard and wifi card. That would delay PCI assertion so the BIOS wouldn't halt with "detected an unsupported card - remove it" , effectively behaving as if plugged the wifi card in after bios boot. Then need DIY eGPU Setup 1.x or ACPI/DSDT hacks to enable the whitelisted port as discussed in [ALL ProBooks/Laptops in General] Our WiFi WhiteListing Days Are 0v3r!</strike>

If we had access to the CPU voltages, you could undervolt it and slash another 10c without affecting the performance. Alas, this still remains a dream unless someone is brave enough to try cross-flashing BIOS from another model like Nando suggests. I'll probably give it a shot at some point, but am too dependent on my machine nowadays...

If you took the risk and crossed flashed say a 8470P/8570P BIOS it would have all the same restrictions as the 2570P one apart from power limits lifted for i7-quad CPUs. Best you'd get for the risk is an extra 200Mhz with your CPU, if it worked. If it did work, then installing a 55W i7-9320XM would raise power limits again. Before going down that path I'd suggest obtain the 8470/8570/8770 dumps, compare the non-BIOS areas to see if can figure out if variable data such as power limits is being stored at specific (non-BIOS) locations. If so, then would modify the 2570P dump with the data for 45W i7-quads, flash it with fptw64/fpt and see if gets applied by the 2570P BIOS code. If not, then consider if you're up for cross flashing the 8470/8570 bios dump.

.. or could just cross flash the 8470/8570/8770 bios and hope for the best :)

The temps go up to 94c and the fan is at full blast. HWinfo64 and other tools detect the exact same numbers, max clocks - 3.6quad-3.8single, 45W and high temps! So the OS does have access to all 45W! If only there was a way of forcing the OS use all the juice. If we can solve this mystery, no need to flash the BIOS!

Grab a CPU MSR dump (which utility?) when it's in your 45W state and compare the MSR when it's in 35W mode. There may be some way of forcing your '45W mode' permanently without a bios flash. Throttlestop would be the tool to do whose author, Unclewebb, would I'm sure be interested in this unusual '45W' state that you've encountered. Unclewebb has a tool to write individual MSR bytes here.

Here's a screenshot. Running @3632QM clocks, normal computing, browsing, etc. No elevation, no forced fans, no chest freezers.

INFO: Request for "ZBOOK 12" emailed to HP PSG head executive and reply received

The lack of a legitimate Haswell successor to the 2570P has been bugging me. So I've emailed the head of the PSG division that makes them suggesting they make a "ZBook 12".

After a string of emails which suggested that a ZBook 12 was to be considered I hit a brick wall.

Looks like in 12.5" it will be a ULV "820 G1". The recommendation is to look at a 14" Probook 600 as being the smallest genuine 2570P replacement. It has a socketted CPU, dual-drives, better HD/FHD panels and even a dGPU option. No expresscard slot though. The 12.5" 2570P small-and-mighty form factor being discontinued.

The other reason I'm sending this email is I've updated the 12.5" HP Elitebook 2570P Owner's Lounge @ TechInferno. Done because the lack of a true HP 2570P (or other vendor) successor means I'm looking at a long 2570P ownership stint.

That updated thread making it easy to understand why a Zbook 12 is desirable system. A system that would fit nicely into the ZBook 14/15/17 range. The thread identifies missing 2570P performance features in the '820 G1' that your 2570P marketting team or even tech reviewers have completely missed. Namely, the upgradable CPU, ODD for second HDD/SSD, RAID-0/1 support, expresscard slot for eGPU use and upgradable wifi.

Not surprised then that the Lenovo's X230 was the dominant ultraportable in the last sales cycle.

I believe you are the leader of the PSG division at HP. I hope I can shoot through a request for HP to continue making a 12.5" Elitebook 2570P refresh in the latest Haswell series. At this point in time it looks like that form factor has been dropped.

Consider the breakdown of the the specs of the new 820 G1 Elitebook below. As a long time 12" Elitebook user your latest "820 G1" lacks several features that I've come to depend upon in my 2570P. Those being: expresscard slot for external pcie device connection and upgradable CPUs.

There is no other ultraportable system with as much performance potential as your 2570P (RAID-0, i7-quad CPU upgradability). Which makes me wonder why isn't anyone at HP alerting the public about this performance potential?? Do you have a stealth marketting division?

The marketting of the 12.5" 2570P was very poor. Lenovo on the other hand has been able to buy loyalty (lobbyists/advocates) from big names like notebookreview.com that have been advocating their Thinkpad X and T series Thinkpads, even banning users (me) who suggest a Elitebook over a Thinkpad as a candidate purchase system.

I'm sending this email in the hope that you will re-introduce 2570P-like features in a "ZBOOK 12" to accompany the ZBOOK 14/15/17. At the very least consider making a "ZBOOK 12" that is simply a 2570P refresh with Haswell internals. Better yet, add official i7-quad support with an upgraded heatsink/heatpipe, a better/higher resolution screens, (optional) swap the Displayport for a mDP/Thunderbolt combo port and provide a mSATA/M.2/NGFF WWAN/SATA port.

We are seeing less and less expresscard slot systems and I believe in 12" Dell and Lenovo will no longer be offering it at all: see expresscard Haswell systems list here. A "ZBOOK 12" would therefore be a standout.

Given the poor 2570P marketting, you could easily re-work excess 2570P stock with these upgrades and put a "ZBOOK 12" sticker on the LCD bezel to replace the "2570P" one.

There is a definite market for a tiny powerhouse of a unit as this would be.

Please make it happen. Your comments are most welcome.

I run this modem on 2570p smoothly with 2560p drivers.

INFO: Using a HP HS2340 WWAN module on a non-HP notebook

Same here. I even flashed the latest firmware (R5E08 from SP55193) on it to resolve a sporadic drop out issue. I get 21Mbps HSPA+ speed. Works great.

Even used it on a Dell E6230 and a HP 2530P with unwhitelisted BIOS. Though HP's installer in sp57728 refused to load the HS230 driver on the Dell. There I firstly installed the driver on a 2560P/2570P and saved the decompressed components as HS2340-Ericsson.rar. On the E6230 I extract this archive then just went into Device Manager and load drivers for the numerous HS2340 devices by selecting "install from disk" pointing to the extracted archive folder. Once the driver is loaded, the HS2340 works just as well on the E6230 as it does on the 2570P.

2570P uses magnets to hold LCD cover down

It was mentioned that a cosmetic difference between the 2560P and 2570P was the removal of the top cover latches. This also meant the 2570P palmrest has done away with the two palmrest holes to provide a latch catch edge as was found in the 2560P. This gives the 2570P a cleaner look.

So then how does the 2570P hold the lid down? By accident I had a metal object near the shift key when I discovered it was being held against the system chassis. There are magnets near the left and right shift keys and along both sides of the LCD. Those attract each other when the top cover closed so as to keep it closed.

Added lots of goodies

You can see I've added a bunch of goodies to this thread over the last few days and cleaned up the first post. It's looking like I'll be owning the 2570P for a while as the Haswell offerings so far miss the mark with expresscard slots being phased out of most business grade notebooks as they go ultrabook-slim. You were faster ;) Cause I was wondering why right side of laptop (above USB and DP) attracts my cables ;)

And one more thing about IPS upgrade, we need to remember about new UWVA 12,5 panel for 820 G1, maybe this one will fit better than LG IPS... few months and we'll see if there will be option to create the best under 14" laptop ever: IVB ZBook 12 + UWVA panel :)

Maybe 820 G1 backlit keyboard will be suitable for 2570p also ;)

I've checked the wwan slot's pin, the power supply and GND pin are the same as msata slot, just pin 23,25,31,33 were cut by HP, so I connect them and test with a msata card. Unfortunately startup bios detect it is not wwan and disable it, maybe is whitelisted. And then I cover pin 45,47,49,51, it still stop at bios detect. So i think it also should remove wifi/wwan whitelist from bios.

Change wifi card (intel 6205) to wwan slot, it still disable at bios startup, and into windows system can't found 6205. It was absolutely block by bios.

My msata SSD is TOSHIBA THNSNF256, the pin 23,25,31,33,45,47,49,51 are main, the others are power supply, GND and NC(pin 20 is not used at my ssd).So i don't know how hp detect the card is wwan.

Unfortunately those test results don't tell us if those extra lines are mSATA or mPCIe as it seems *BOTH* are halting the BIOS bootup. This is strange as you'd expect one that isn't the correct protocol to pass BIOS checks. I mean if the slot is mPCIe and there's a mSATA card in there, it can't get a PCI ID to compare against in the whitelist.

That is *unless* your mSATA SSD has a USB interface providing the system a USB ID that fails WWAN whitelisting checking. Cover the USB pins 36 and 38 (USB) and retest.

Here's some more speculation. Do you have a 6150 (8087:07D6) WiMAX card for testing?

Strong speculation: the WWAN slot can be WWAN+mPCIe with soldered resistors

This whitelisted device is a combo IEEE 802.16e WiMAX and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi wireless adapter which the 6150 product brief tells us uses Connector interface: PCIe electrical interface for WiFi, USB 2.0 for WiMAX.

The 2570P wifi slot is PCIe only with no USB lines connected. The WWAN slot is only USB 2.0 from the factory. Though the 2560P schematic shows port1 pci-e line to the WWAN slot which never made it to production.

So then this is a strong indicator that wiring up those extra 4 disconnected lines in the WWAN slot (23,25,31,33) using 0ohm SMT resistors could extend that slot from USB to USB+PCIe. If so it means too then it wouldn't be USB+mSATA as mSATA and mPCIe uses those same same transmission tracks.

I think that we could supply the backlit keyboard with the additional cable for USB charging port (top one on the back of the laptop). To make sure, we'd need to disassemble the laptop or find a schematics to see, what voltage does this cable have (I think that backlit need 5V). And we would need to disassemble the port anyway, to solder a keyboard cable to the USB cable.

But we need to confirm that USB charging port is really different from other ports (I think it is, because DAC connected to it has better sound quality, which means it has higher voltage), and check the voltage of the baclit.

I thought, that it's a part of the keyboard itself, and the only problem is the power supply/wiring. And that 2170p keyboard did not fit because of size and latches incompatibility.

I hope those new 820 G1 panels use LVDS rather than what seems to be a migration to eDP. If it's eDP then it's not feasible. While I'm OK with the stock panel it seems others desire IPS-like wide viewing angles. Unfortunately there's been no success retrofitting the X220/X230 IPS LVDS panels.

I hope that HP PSG manager does make a Haswell ZBook 12. It would be a relatively easy addition that fits in nicely with the new model designations. ZBooks buck the ultrabook trend where a chunkier chassis = more power, price and performance. 2570P was almost ZBook i7-quad spec to begin with. It's just missing the better panel, Haswell internals and higher price. That info raises the profile of our system considerably.

It's only our 12.5" HP 2570P and the now discontinued 13" Sony Z3 that can host a i7-quad in a small chassis. While the Z3 is technically impressive, I prefer the 2570P's durability, larger battery options, socketted CPU, expresscard slot, better warranty. All the while at a significantly lower ebay price.

About backlit keyboard, do anyone know a good DIY approach for this? The screen lamp can't be meant for this right? (LOL'd hard when I first saw it)

experimental howto: fitting a '820 G1' backlit keyboard

It's pretty straightforward if the keyboard itself fits into the chassis insert correctly. There is an additional backlight ribbon cable that requires either 3.3V+GND or 5V+GND patch leads attached to an appropriate spot on the 2570P systemboard to power the backlight.

I disassembled the motherboard and try to connect the pcie pin to dock esata pin. The dock pin is too mini to soldered it and the dock esata pin is not the same as HDD/ODD/ESATA port. I thinked the docking station may have some chip to adapt it, because HDD/ESATA PORT has another chip to keep singnal(see 2560P diagram). It's the best way to find out dock's sata point near PCH chip, but I had no idea to find it on the PCB without the map.

@jot23 Even if there will be option to pass voltage to the backlit where are you going to take backlit from? :)

Awesome temps Bro! But your ambient/room temp is really low :) BTW, if you are using eGPU, your CPU temps will be even lower. My CPU draws an extra 15W for the IGP part during games.

Yea, ambient is really low, something between 15-20C. thats for sure in normal ambient 20-25C there will be <45C on CPU and during summer <55C.

You're right, I got much lower temps during gaming FarCry3 (i7QM) on eGPU than VanHelsing (i5) on iGPU ;)

Well,...as much as like the responsiveness of Windows 8.1, have to go back to W7. Microsoft is doing a great job at taking more and more control away from the end user. If that tendency continues I'll have no choice but to switch over to linux entirely. We are entering a grim era of control instilled by world's leading corporations. :(
