Are Sony SVZ/SZ2 PMD users getting x2 2.0 links?

Hi Mikjoa,

We recently discovered in http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2513-how-we-measure-rank-describe-our-systems-no-more-%401-2opt.html thread that Thunderbolt is currently limited to x2 2.0 + approx 12.5%. So if a user purchases a Sonnet Thunderbolt enclosure the eGPU will register a x4 2.0 link but get bottlenecked downstream by the Thunderbolt<->Thunderbolt comms.

Now I know the Sony SVZ/SZ2 guys were noting poor performance from their PMD. Could you ask them to run CUDA-Z (NVidia) or PCieSpeedTest (AMD) on their PMD eGPU and submit the results? We are seeing approx 400MB/s on a x1 2.0 link. So they'd either see 1600MB/s (x4 2.0) or if they too are being crippled in a similar way to a x2 2.0 link then they will see 800MB/s (device-to-host).

EDIT: This was confirmed via PM. The PMD runs a 10Gbps link just like 2011-2013 Thunderbolt, equivalent to x2 2.0 + 12.5% bandwidth.

Have you tested Battlefield 4 yet? I still have my SVZ, and have been tempted to get off my ass and finally do this.

I know he tried the beta, and it seems to run really well, like 60 fps most of the time (vsync on) in 1680x1050 with ultra settings.

I'll add a picture for you to see exactly where to cut the backplate

(this is really the only way... don't try to do it without backplate for instance you'd break the Z if you open it without backplate.)

Are these numbers with the internal screen or external?

Thinking about picking up a Razor Blade 14, but I still am not sure I want to sell my SVZ for it.

Thanks MikjoA!

i've played at the beta of BF4 , the game , at max settings , is playable , more than 60 fps , on an external screen.

On the internal screen , i've tested a little and the game is limited to 50 fps approx .. but can be playeble...

I'd be willing to buy a beer via paypal for a five minute YouTube video showing us bit internal and external performance!

I had drawn and measured a design with parts from HWTools that would allow me to remove the VGA port and place a extension adapter in its place.

So off of the card itself would be a 4" cable that went into the adapter inside. Then it would be plug and play externally with a 30 sized cable.

Their engineers said I would suffer no bad with loss with this setup at 30 cable max.

Hmmm...

At the beginning of the video , the gtx 780 was at 1110 mhz , and , after the first scene , i inscrease the gpu clock at 1254 mhz , witch is approx 10/12% better.

The Solo is fully playable at theses FPS , but for more experiences , i disable HBSO with is really , really gpu consuming... fps without HBSO are approx 80/90 fps..

Excelent video !!! I'm wondering about the next steps to setup the PE4L-PM060A. I have a Vaio VPCZ217GH and I wonder if I can do eGPU with too.

- - - Updated - - -

I tried the link :- HWtools's PE4L-PM060A it seems not be working any longer is this device ok : PE4L V2.1b + PE4L-PM060A ( PM3N +60cm Cable ), No SWEX, GEN.2 PCI-E Slot Adapter ?

For the bottom plate; is this one ok for a VPCZ217GH ? http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Sony,Laptop,Part,X25809363.aspx ? : X-2580-936-3 - Sony Laptop Miscellaneous Parts

So are you saying that the thunderbolt is not recommended and that the PCIE slot is better?

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

There is no Thunderbolt port on a Z2 / SZ13. It has a proprietry Sony 10Gbps Light Peak port (LP) which no body has managed to create a LP-to-pcie adapter for.

The 5Gbps mPCIe slot is readily accessible and an eGPU adapter is available at low cost, giving great performance. Hence why this thread's implementation report uses the mPCIe slot.

Hallo

For the SVZ owner, is there is a possibility to force the system using PCIE 3.0 instead PCIE 2.0..?

I just read, that the i7 3612QM and HM77 Chipset support the PCIE 3.0, but from AIDA64 my system just using PCIE 2.0

And after read that there is possibility to force using PCIE 3.0 instead PCIE 2.0 :

Expresscard/mPCIe port is on the Southbridge, which has a max specification of PCIe 2.0 in the Series-7 HM77 chipset. No vendor has used the PCIe 3.0 specced northbridge to accomodate one of those ports.

Hallo Tech Inferno Fan

Thanks for your explanation. You helped me a lot before in another thread while I did VPCZ1 eGpu

I thnik, it is not a big problem now. I just read, that the pcie 2.0 performance almost same with pcie 3.0. The reason why people want buying the 3.0 motherboard just for increasement performance in SLI

By the way Tech Inferno Fan, can you confirm that my tolud is lower than 3,5GB..?

Your TOLUD is 2.75GB. Plenty of room for an eGPU there.

Hi Tech Inferno Fan

Thanks

By the way, is bplus or hwtools didnt produced any PE4L-L060A again..? A PE4L with soldered mhdmi cable on PE4L board, but detachable mhdmi cable on PM3N board

Looking on ebay, bplus, and hwtools, but can not find it

BPlus have not produced a fully certified Gen2-capable product with a detachabe mHDMI cable on the PM3N board. Saying that, I have success using a AMD 7970 card with a PE4H 2.4 + PCIEMM-060B at Gen2 speed on a HP 2570P, though a GTX670 failed. http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2109-diy-egpu-experiences-%5Bversion-2-0%5D-142.html#post55765

Another T|I user, dan, bettering my result by getting his MSI GE620DX to run a Gen2 speed with a PE4H 2.4 + GTX750Ti PCIEMM-060B (mPCIe): http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/7479-%5Bguide%5D-15-msi-ge620dx-gtx750ti%40x1-2opt-pe4h-2-4-mpcie-win7-64-a.html#post102604 . There's obviously a hit-and-miss in trying to duplicate his results.

For more discussion about a socketted mPCIe product see http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2958-pe4l-pm060a-mini-pcie-extender.html#post40824 .
