Founder Brian Posted July 28, 2012 Author Founder Share Posted July 28, 2012 I just did a repaste and I stripped one of the standoffs holding the heatsink to the base. So now I can't remove the heatsink anymore How did you manage to strip it? You must have over tightened like crazy. potatorage
I don't believed I tightened it excessively. When I tried to remove the final screw from the CPU heatsink I noticed that it would not come off. I then flipped the board and it appeared that the standoff was spinning freely in the base, and that the edges of the base holding the standoff in place were stripped. wbabt007
Well I am back(I am always here, I just lurk to much in the background) and it seems 3 times a charm. As some of you know recently my dell xps m1530 decided it wanted to be a desktop and the lcd stopped working. After some research it seemed that the inverted or CFL lamp need it replacement. After a botched repair( Bad instructions for replacement) It was time to pull the plug and get a new secondary laptop that actually is portable (need it for college) My first choice was to get of those cool ultra books that they been hyping for months with the promise of windows metro.. err windows 8 but it seems that those machines are really a entry level laptops with over-hyped "aluminum bodies" "long battery times" and integrated graphics(intel HD 3000 seems to be the choice) So it was a no brainier and ordered a m14 x-R2 since to order a ultra book with some decent video power you need to drop 1500 and up for a basic configuration. So this is my config, let me know what you guys think, in a way I pretty happy with it, since this would be my 3rd Alienware (M17x-r1, M18x R1) oh and it comes with a free xbox 360!! unreal25
Congrats! It's a nice laptop, and with that screen resolution I'm sure 650M will run anything maxxed out even in following years.P.S. You should get an SSD. The prices are quite good these days. (Also, I think its possible to ditch the optical drive and have a secondary drive installed.) svl7
Nice rig! The 650m is a beast, and this machine definitely beats any ultrabook when it comes to raw performance How much more does the 900p screen cost compared to the 720p? Imo 720p is just too low... but everybody has different priorities when it comes to hardware.

nicovlogg
Sweet forum! Has anybody here devised some sort of port replicator/dock mechanism or can point me to anything like that? Got an M14x last week!
mw86
I can suggest if your still having issues on battery installing and utilizing Throttle Stop if you are not already and on battery limit the cpu by one bin, if still shutdown keep going. Too much power might be drawing from battery. Theres never been a good fix to this type of issue and is usually only way to curb the problem. ratinox
Greetings from the n00b . Is there any information available for the version A08 BIOS for the M14xR2? It seems that recent (shipping September 2012) M14xR2's like mine are shipping with this BIOS version being reported. Is this actually an A08 version? Is it a typo for A03? Thx. nnyymm
Did anyone experience really bad wear and tear on the M14X R2's palm rest after a few weeks of usage(considering you game on it everyday for 7 hours)? Knowing that it is rubber coated, the plastic will be revealed really quick won't it?
ratinox
The finish seems to be pretty durable on mine. If you're concerned about wear then there's always Contact Paper. It's cheap, durable, easy to clean, and should be thin enough so as not to mar the display panel if you don't use a keyboard cover.
