Multicom P170EM and M.2 SSD

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am trying to give a little juice to my old Multicom P170EM, and the biggest improve (in my opinion) can be a faster SSD. I was looking to new stunning performance M.2 SSD-s from the market with big eyes, but after a lot of time of surfing on different forums and benchmark sites I'm still confused: can I buy and use a new super fast M.2 x4 SSD (M pins) with an adapter to regular SATA 3 port or not (I saw that regular 2.5 inch SATA 3 SSD-s don't use full potential of SATA 3 ports, especially at write speeds)? I saw a lot of M.2 SATA SSD-s (B pins), but these have a slower speed (comparable, if no slower than regular SATA 3 ports).

Thank you.

There are two kinds of M.2 SSD's, there are the PCIe based ones, those can be either NVMe or AHCI, NVMe ones are the fastest, AHCI are a bit slower(mainly IOP's, and are more or less phased out).

Then there are m.2 SATA SSD's, those use the regular SATA interface and will be as fast/slow as a regular 2.5inch SATA SSD.

If you use a M.2 SATA to 2.5inch SATA interface you are just wasting money on the converter and more money on the SSD because M.2 SATA SSD's are kinda rare(the most recent one's are MX300's) and they will offer exactly the same speed as a 2.5inch drive will ever deliver.

Your laptop doesnt support m.2 PCIe SSD's, so just get a big 2.5inch SATA SSD and be happy.

Also, update your BIOS and all your drivers, and do a clean install of Windows, NEVER clone an install from an HDD to an SSD.
