@entzoe: i also own a mac mini 2012. can you please tell me about your setup? i also like to do an egpu-setup for it, but i don´t like the way over the expresscard-adapter. do you also have windows-drivers?

I already posted long time ago about my experience with eGPU, it was mainly with HP EliteBook 2540p@GTX 660 and this setup worked flawlessly! Unfortunately the card wasn't mine and i had to return it, then i got stucked with my old ATI HD4770 with had some issues with the more powerful EliteBook with i7 cpu but it worked on my older Lenovo T400s, so i was using it from time to time but since the overall power of this setup was so low at the end i wasn't using this combo too much.

Now

Now, after some time passed I decided that I would like to play some games again and after reading everything on the internets about some decent gaming HW or Laptops with good power/money value i decided to resurrect my old eGPU idea. So i done some comparison and bought Gefore GTX 750 from MSI which was good for the money on our marked and it also appeared that it will compliment to the i7 cpu as well.

Struggle starts

After I today returned home with the card i started immediately geeking with the eGPU setup, unfortunately i wasn't lucky with my business/company HP EliteBook 2540p, after some trolling around and reading about the code 12 issue i took one of the 2gb memory modules out(total is 2x2GB) and things slowly started to work even thou that the PCIE slot on this laptop with this particular card works in mysterious ways, if the card is inserted and egpu powered card is not recognized, if the egpu is hotplugged card its not recognized, but when its hotplugged for 2nd time its recognizing the card well, but it runs kinda a doggy, when i tried to run first strike benchmark it was taking ages to load and then it was complete slide show, when i started the cloud gate benchmark it loaded fast and it was also running decently, total score was 7150 which is in comparison to the score of the same card on desktop system which is scoring in this benchmark aroun 14500, about a half,

So apart of the performance and doggyness issues when kinda hard to connect the egpu, everything works apart of the fact that i have to run on half of the memory, which is to be honest useless especially if you want to use it for gaming.

Struggle code 12

After i have struggled with my more powerful company laptop I wanted to test the setup on my personal Lenovo T400s, fortunately on this laptop each time i connect the card its recognized instantly, drivers were loaded and everything went very smoothly apart of the fact that my personal laptop have also more then 4GB of ram to be exact twice as much 2x4GB so I'm getting the code 12 error all the time and so far i wasn't successful to get this card work on my personal laptop.

The Misson

The mission is to get the card MSI GTX 750 or any other similar working on the EliteBook 2540p since is the most powerful laptop i have and because i can use the optimus feature on it , backup plan is to get this working on the Lenovo but not sure if the value of the whole setup egpu+card will worth the performance.

Summary

Since i was able to run the GTX 660 on both of my laptops i was expecting the same from the GTX 750, unfortunately this is not the case and the new card is not working of both of them(if they have full memory installed) from what i have read i think one of the solutions could be the "setup 1.x" SW and i don't have any issues to paying for this SW but I have different issues, first i would prefer a solution when the HW will just work like in the previous case of GTX660, i call this clean HW solution so I ask is it possible if i will buy the card from different vendor, for instance Asus/Gigabyte/Gainward, is there a chance this will fix my issue? My current card is just few hours new so I have still some time to exchange it for a different one. Second issue which i have with the "setup 1.x" solution is that I'm not sure that it will work on my company laptop since i have bit-locker and other security sw installed there.

Bottom line

As I said i think its preferable to run the egpu setup on the HP since its more powerful but if it wont be possible, will it make sense to still run it on the Lenovo, do think it makes sense to try some different brands of similar card with same chip or should i try the "setup 1.x" sw? If you would still recommend would be possible to get a "Demo" copy from the vendor to test it on the preferred HP laptop because I fear that it will not work due the bitlocker and security sw of course in case it will work as expected i will pay for it ASAP.

Few offtopic hints and questions and my curiosity

1. This ITX case would make a great case for a eGPU and GTX 750x card, since the 750 series are low consumption it would then just require some cheap ac/dc adapter

If i will make the card work at the end will i promise i will keep you posted about this case usage possibility for eGPU.

2. Is now anywhere some reference/user manual for the egpu board? When i bought it i was only able to get the datasheet

I'm particularly interested about switch 4 and 6, from what i understand switch 4 is a PCIE x mode switch, and switch 6 is a bios delay switch, but what are the values on them?

I have also seen some setups which were maybe using the USB port to power the eGPU, is it actually possible, howto achieve this if possible?

My setup is that ATX PSU is connected to the swex switch board on one end by the 5V fdd connector to the eGPU on the ether end, why should i connect the board by the additional cable?

Ok I was quite tired when i was writing this since it was very early morning here when i posted this, so i will wrap this up:

1. Does it work for me to run the eGPU on the old Lenovo T400s?

2. Does it worth a try to try different brand of the VGA?

3. Does it worth for me to try "setup 1.x" sw, this loops back to the question number 1. since I'm very unsure that it will work on my business laptop.

Hey guys im new!

Before I used a egpu setup with EDP GDC V6 with Expresscard to a Lenovo T540p w/GT730M and a GTX780 card with great results.

Ran Nando4's eGPU 1.30 and it worked flawlessly besides having to hotplug the expresscard before booting into Nando's eGPU BIOs program to disable my GT730M onboard card.

Ran the display to a 1080p monitor too btw.

However I sold everything and now have a

Late 2013 rmbp 15inch w/GT750M card, will this work with the EDP GDC V6 expresscard to a sonnet thunderbolt adapter? If no

Will either of these work Sonnet SEL (w/x16 riser), Sonnet SE II, or Sonnet III-D?

I can figure out how to power it, and dont need the case for any of the Sonnets since ill be making my own, but does either model make a difference in terms of performance?

Basically want to run a GTX780 VIA Thunderbolt without losing most of the performance via an external 1080p monitor.

Any suggestions is welcomed! and Thanks in advance!

For more info I have the EDP GDC V6 Expresscard adapter and have my own PSU to power both the unit and GPU

Using a Quaddro NVS295 (to test it works before I reinvest into another GTX card) however after multiple reboots I have yet to see the card recognized within Nando4s eGPU program =[

Hi all,

Ive been posting on related threads but no one has answered my question yet.

I used to have a Lenovo T540p w/GT730m on a GTX780 by using EXP GDC v6 Expresscard on an external PSU with amazing results due to Nando4's egpu 1.30

On Windows 7 64bit Professional.

However I have upgraded to a Late 2013 15inch rmbp w/GT750m

I have tried to use the same EXP GDC v6 Expresscard WITH a Sonnet ExpressCard to Thunderbolt adapter without any success on having Nando4's egpu 1.30 recognize the card on both Windows 7 & 8.

The GTX780 DID show up on OSX but could not engage it to work on the MAC OSX.

What adapter would work best using Thunderbolt with getting the most possible performance. I do not have the resources to get the Sonnet III($1000) box.

Would like to use the macbook LCD but not a deal breaker. I do not want to sell my rmbp and get an IRIS ONLY model either, I took a huge hit when I sold the T540p fully loaded to afford to get a fully loaded rmbp w/GT750m.

I used to have a Lenovo T540p w/GT730m on a GTX780 by using EXP GDC v6 Expresscard on an external PSU with amazing results due to Nando4's egpu 1.30

On Windows 7 64bit Professional.

However I have upgraded to a Late 2013 15inch rmbp w/GT750m

I have tried to use the same EXP GDC v6 Expresscard WITH a Sonnet ExpressCard to Thunderbolt adapter without any success on having Nando4's egpu 1.30 recognize the card on both Windows 7 & 8.

The GTX780 DID show up on OSX but could not engage it to work on the MAC OSX.

What adapter would work best using Thunderbolt with getting the most possible performance. I do not have the resources to get the Sonnet III($1000) box.

Would like to use the macbook LCD but not a deal breaker. I do not want to sell my rmbp and get an IRIS ONLY model either, I took a huge hit when I sold the T540p fully loaded to afford to get a fully loaded rmbp w/GT750m.

Sorry to break it to you guys but from looking at the pictures and the laptop specs, it appears that the egpu will be using lightpeak not thunderbolt. This makes sense as it would enforce brand loyalty (you would need their laptop) and also it seems intel is much more lenient with light peak (there is already an existing one for the vaio z AnandTech | Sony Updates Vaio Z: Light Peak and An External GPU).

Say what? Light Peak was the codename used for Thunderbolt.

No it was the precursor. Lightpeak was integrated into the USB port not mini display. Same underlying technology but in some ways more useful. For instance the dock wouldn't have to use up some of the pcie band with for all of its extra peripherals, it could dedicate it all to GPU and put them on usb

Saw your reply for a split second, and now you're hidden too!! This Bizon guy in the above video is a major opportunist. Let's hope other eGPU users will down vote his youtube video to protect against the "whoah.. I want it" knee-jerk purchase after watching his (what borders on fraudulent) advertising. Only way we can protect unsuspecting users from being ripped off.

Bizon is trying to get over US$336 profit for his US$610 kit (EXP GDC V6). With each sale he makes he can buy a USD$200-$270 AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box in profit along + quite a few McHappy meals for his mates.

Pls dislike (thumbs down) the above youtube Bizon (RU) video to warn customers of being ripped off

If you feel that charging US$610 (21,990 RUB) for his BizonBox, comprising of US$274 worth of parts listed below is an insult to Russian eGPU fans then pls dislike his video linked

While Bizon continues to rip off Russian customers, I'll continue to list him as an eGPU saboteur

Bizon may be monitoring this thread. Makes sense. It would probably have been here from which he gathered information to create his bundle. If so, Bizon please:

  1. cease insulting Russian eGPU users by massive profiteering. You are selling US$274 (that's retail, not wholesale) of parts for US$610.

  2. cease hiding the Sonnet Echo Expresscard adapter in your video and not providing it's functionality detail in your product description. Doing so betrays your customer confidence as it *appears* you are providing a unique 10Gbps Thunderbolt solution. Instead, your BizonBox is a 4Gbps TB-to-EC2 solution using a EXP GDC V6 + Sonnet Echo Expresscard Pro.
