2012 Macbook Air i5-3337U-1.8 + GTX770@x1 2.0 (EXP GDC V6 + Sonnet Echo Expresscard Pro, Thunderbolt-to-Expresscard) (Russian)

Notes

The PSU powering it all and the expresscard-to-Thunderbolt adapter are hidden. Based on the cabling it apears he is using the stock supplied 220W Dell DA-2 220W AC adapter and a Sonnet Echo Expresscard Pro Thunderbolt-to-expresscard adapter.

A factory-clocked (not overclocked) GTX770 is rated at 229W TDP, which slightly exceeds a DA-2 220W rating. However, a taobao vendor claims they can output 240W. He's either taking advantage of that extra 20W or not loading the GTX770 to the point where it's stressing the PSU enough to cause problems.

A GTX680 is rated at 195W TDP and would fit more comfortably within the power limits. A GTX770 is pretty much a overclocked GTX680.

It appears too he has either had a customized EXP GDC V6 acrylic enclosure as linked below with his logo "BiZon" or made one himself. Nice.

10/16Gbps AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box makes this style of 5Gbps Thunderbolt-to-expresscard eGPU implementations redundant

The recently release US$200 AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box makes this 5Gbps eGPU implementation no longer cost effective. Had he used that enclosure instead he'd double the bandwidth (5GBps->10Gbps) for the same price running it at a native 10Gbps Thunderbolt1 bandwidth. Furthermore, he'd have the option of upgrading his notebook to a Thunderbolt2-specced 2013 rMBP to gain a further 60% PCIe bandwidth (10Gbps->16Gbps).

Sonnet checked with another device - all ok

On exp gdc schelkak switch - meaningless

What should I do guys?

This question is macbook and thunderbolt related so it will be much better answered in:

2012 Macbook Air i5-3337U-1.8 + GTX770@x1 2.0 (EXP GDC V6 + Sonnet Echo Expresscard Pro, Thunderbolt-to-Expresscard) (Russian)

[video=youtube;Jw_HLdLRmwo]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw_HLdLRmwo[/video]

Nando4 comment>> This vendor has hidden my comments from his youtube video where I've questioned why he's attempting a US$361 profit for his "product". If you are as disappointed as I am with this bundle then feel free to 'dislike' his youtube video. It seems the only way to warn potential customers of being ripped off by his redundant, overpriced solution since he will censor (hide) such comments.
Here a vendor demos a GTX770 eGPU on a 2012 Macbook Pro attached via a EXP GDC V6 + 220W Dell DA-2 + Sonnet Echo Expresscard Pro Thunderbolt-to-expresscard adapter. A few things

* his webstore lists the the solution (minus the GTX770) as a BiZonBox for 21,990 RUB (US$610). How does he get such a large number? I'm not sure because his kit is made up of the following three components. Is this vendor then attempting a USD$361 profit?

[INDENT]USD$99 EXP GDC V6 + 220W Dell DA-2 AC adapter USD$130 Sonnet Echo Expresscard Pro USD$20 Acrylic cover with customized BiZon labelling[/INDENT]

* He is demoing a GTX770 which is rated at 229W TDP. That slightly exceeds a Dell DA-2's 220W rating. However, a taobao vendor I saw a while back claims a DA-2 can output 240W. He's either taking advantage of that extra 20W or not loading the GTX770 to the point where it's stressing the PSU enough to cause problems. A GTX680 is rated at 195W TDP and would fit more comfortably within the power limits. A GTX770 is pretty much a overclocked GTX680.

* The Sonnet Thunderbolt-to-expresscard adapter is not shown in the video. Is this stealth marketting to attract Thunderbolt notebook owner attention without disclosing the solution provides 5Gbps downgraded performance from native Thunderbolt2 16Gbps or Thundebolt1 10Gbps?

thunderbolt adapter okay (since I connect esata and everything is determined and requires drivers)

But if you connect the video is all in the manager is empty

Ok I see, I have not much experience of Macbooks, but here are two implementations that uses the Macbook + sonnet:

[gtx680] + [PE4L] + [sonnet Echo Pro] + [2012 MBA] + [Windows 8.1]

I think you might find some good stuff there!

Keep us updated =)

Hello fellow eGPUers....I'm not sure if this has been discussed here but some quick question.

I'm planning to build my DIY eGPU

I have the following

1. Thunderbolt DIsplay

2. Mac Mini 2012 i7 16GB Windows 7 64

3. PE4H

4. Sonnet EchoPro EC TB adapter

I'm planning to get either the following;

Option 1 - (

)

1. XFX r6670 CORE Edition

2. 65 W 19V Adapter

or

1. EVGA GeForce 750 Ti

2. I'm not sure what DC adapter will work for this GPU. [EDIT] I read one of the reply here about Dell DA-2/3, how am I able to connect it to the PE4H since it doesn't have the round end plug?)

or is this good enough as adapter?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0057KIHAI/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A325274ZEF9XYZ

I'm leading to using adapter to really make it more portable. Which is better for my Mac Mini the NVIDIA or AMD?

Thank you in advance!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I just got a new SSD and did a fresh install of windows 8.1. After I re-installed it, I attempted to reconnect my eGPU. I followed the same steps as I did before, except I am now getting an Error 12 message. The only other thing that has changed since I installed the SSD is that I removed the WWAN card. Do I need to do a DSDT override or Setup 1.x compaction? I'm not really sure what would be causing my eGPU to suddenly not have enough address space to function.

Hey I wouldnt try either of those guides, they are extremely overcomplicated for the technology that is currently available. I suggest buying an nividia gpu that does not have the maxwell chipset, and the akitio enclosure from BH. I could try to help you get it working both on osx and windows. (msg me for details)

Not sure on how I can contact you.. here's my email [email protected] I have lots of questions hope you we can talk there.... thanks!

Pls dislike (thumbs down) the above youtube BIZON (RU) video to warn customers of being ripped off

If you feel that charging US$610 (21,990 RUB) for his BiZonBox, comprising of US$274 worth of parts listed below is an insult to Russian eGPU fans then pls dislike his video to warn potential customers.

BiZon has censored dissent by disabled youtube comments and even got 17 mates to like his video. There are currently 3 dislike votes. Dislikes being the only remaining mechanism to warn customers of being ripped off.

*
USD$99 EXP GDC V6 + 220W Dell DA-2 AC adapter

*
USD$130 Sonnet Echo Expresscard Pro

*
USD$20 Acrylic cover
with customized BiZon labelling

* US$25 Thunderbolt cable

BIZON has now disabled comments and dislike counter as explained in

.

It appears he is monitoring this thread. Makes sense. It would have been here from which he gathered discussion and information to package his bundle.

@BIZON please:

- cease insulting Russian eGPU users by massive profiteering. You are selling US$274 (that's retail, not wholesale) of parts for US$610.

- cease hiding the Sonnet Echo Expresscard adapter in your video and product description. Doing so betrays your customer confidence as it *appears* you are providing a unique 10Gbps Thunderbolt solution. Instead, your BIZONBox is a 5Gbps Thunderbolt-to-expresscard solution using a EXP GDC V6 + Sonnet Echo Expresscard Pro.

Thank you.

Hey all,

I received an Echo SEL after not being able to cancel my order and switch to the Akitio Thunder2.

This case is quite small and cannot fit an eGPU, but I thought that Squinks's solution in his SLI post is not too bad looking:

post-28471-14494998182773_thumb.jpg

While he uses regular risers, a more stable solution would be to use a 90 degree riser. The only one I've found on eBay appears to tilt in the wrong direction:

PCI E 8x to 16x Riser Adapter Card for 1U 2U | eBay

I can't find any others similar to this. Any tips? Thanks!

This seems like a great solution. Would the following all work together?:

Akitio - $201

PCIE 16x to 16x flex riser w/ molex connector - $5

Dell DA-2 Power supply - $20 - will this work for me?

MSI GTX760 mini ITX - $250

I'm not understanding how the power supply connects to the Akitio... maybe someone can help clarify?

Also - has anyone confirmed if this solution works on MacbookAir? Windows 7 / Windows 8.1?

Hi,

I've got a Mac Book Retina 13 with 8GB of RAM hooked up to a Sonet Echo express vie thunderbolt. From there I use a Vidock4 with an old GF9800 GT (150W power supply). I got setup 1.3 installed and runing on Windows 8.1 so I can boot into the setup 1.3 environment, the GF shows up and is recognized. My problem is that whenever I try to do a compaction it stops working at "Writing PCI" and then does nothing. Have to reboot after that.

Any ideas due to why this might happen?
