ReaverM1
Is it possible to upgrade the display from the alienware 17 (2014) which is 1080p to the 4k display from the new alienware 17? Thanks in advance!
bootleg2580
If you are talking about the m17x version of the alienware then no as the lids are different but the alienware r1 shouldnt be a problem as they are the same models. But I would contact alienware to be sure before buying.
ReaverM1
Thanks for the reply. I have the 2014 model but I'll contact them to see if that's possible.
bootleg2580
I think in 2014 wasnt it the m17x not alienware 17?

MogRules
Did you ever get an answer on this? Even if it does work what GPU are you running? The R1 was either 780m or 880m unless you upgraded to 980m and I wouldn't want to be trying to push games at 4k on any of those cards TBH. Tech at XOTIC PC said it can only be upgraded up to 980m and display cannot because the chipsets are different. No 1070 or 1080 because of chipsets as well. I bet someone has done it though.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The heatsink wouldn't match up with the GTX 1060 without cutting some parts out of the heatsink is what I was told by a vendor on ebay and that you also have to use the 120hz display in order to run the GTX 1060 MXM. That being said I wonder if the same would work with a 1070 or 1080 MXM... Edited January 13, 2017 by ReaverM1
Zoldago
Here you can see which part doesn't match on the heatsink of an M17x R4. It's not much work. https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/10982-m17x-r4-gtx-1060-upgrade/&do=findComment&comment=155003
