  1. Disclaimer: Apologies for long post. Hello everyone(active), I have a possible huge problem with my GT70 MS-17621 ver 1.0 motherboard as I believe the GTX 680M videocard has fried the onboard video circuit of the motherboard(mobo). The mobo did work fine before after taking out thr videocard, but came with problem of the fan blowing 100% after few seconds starting up from power button press. After trying to get the videocard to work/post (without consulting any forums,at the time), I tried to make the card work again by installing back in 5 or more times in span of 1 hour. After fifth time install card back in, then take out the card, the system will not ever post anymore, the power LED will not change from white to orange anymore and nothing will post on screen display. I have tried to do blind flash of unlocked bios method but spamming pressing keys Ctrl+Home, (Ctrl+FN+PageUp)(even Shift variation) to no avail in beeps or changes in status. I believe now the issue has resided to hardware IC chip failure on the motherboard since it will not ever post anymore, with or without the videocard installed. what I am afraid now is to install new(used) videocard MSI GTX770M 3GB card in, and the motherboard could also fry up the new videocard also. I have dealt with a non-working GT70 laptop for this past month now and been reading all threads in this MSI category for solution but it seems no one has come across this problem, from dead videocard also make the mobo die along with it after a couple of more tests for any signs of electronic life. If someone can chime in about which area on the motherboard can be the problem, I would like to try and diagnosis+troubleshoot why this is happening. So, basically signs of life from MS-17621 motherboard are: Pressing Turbo, Fan, Backlight, Monitor buttons on trim panel = lights up/or fades out keyboard backlight lights up all white after pressing backlight button, pressing second time and third time turns off backlight sections and off. battery charging still works for good battery, battery light lights up when 180w ACadapter is plugged in. After about 30-45 seconds without pressing turbofan button, the fan kicks into high RPM mode and when pressing Turbo button after, the fan will not change speed and stay on high. Power button LED will remain white and never change to orange. No error code beeps ever come out of speakers since problem happened, and will not beep for blindflash attempt. I truly need the help, just knowing I bought this laptop back in December 2012 for $2,300 makes me feel this GT70 needs CPR rescue to come back to life, either by a certified gaming laptop technician or by MSI support, it has worked very well up till this past month.
  2. Good day everyone, I had to replace gtx 675M (dead) with 680M on my MSI GT70 0nd-202US laptop CPU: Intel i7-3610QM GTX 675M is the original card (now dead) Motherboard: MS-1762 Chipset: HM77 / Intel Ivy Bridge I bought it on ebay and in the description it was said that it is compatible with MSI GT70. Later seller confirmed that as well. This is the item: NVIDIA GeForce Dell GTX 680M 2GB DDR5 for MSI Clevo Alienware Upgrademonkey | eBay It is a green card. On some forums I read that you have to use the blue one for clevo. But as I said in the description in was said that it's compatible for MSI GT70. Anyway, after installation I got no POST and black screen. If I remove the GTX 680M everything works and loads normally again. My question is is there anything that can be done to get the laptop to work with this graphics card (BIOS update maybe? There are no official BIOS updates on MSI's website though... My current BIOS version is 10U) or I just should return it to the seller? Thank you
  3. Not sure where to post this so I just added it to general. I just upgraded my M17X R4 120Hz from 675m to a 980m and I'm having a problem I hope someone here can help me with. To start: It was installed correctly and successfully on Windows 10 (I wanted to start somewhere more certain). Everything worked fine and everything read fine (as far as the graphics card goes). After I was sure everything was working properly, I reverted to Windows 7. As I read, with the current unlocked BIOS A11 (posted on this site) it's capable of running 9xxM series in windows 7. When I installed 7 on this laptop soon after buying it (reformatted old HDD, moved to bay 1, inserted 500GB SSD in bay 0 and installed 7 OS on it) I installed selecting the UEFI option and the drive is in GPT. As mentioned, I have Unlocked A11 BIOS (thank you to the maker on this site!). Anyway, once I reverted to 7 it started to boot up and said it needed to run startup repair. I allowed it and it froze once the bar filled at the bottom. Upon restarting I tried once more.. same thing. I tried to "start normally" and it starts boot looping. I then changed "Load Legacy Option Rom" from disable to enable. This causes the 8 beep post issue immediately upon power on. This problem doesn't exist when this option is disabled. I then utilized the HDMI trick (I made a separate post for this the other day. Connect HDMI out to any screen and it will cause post on the laptop screen [but not on the external device]. Can then immediately disconnect once post has occured and works fine with no error or beeps). This let it boot up and I'm able to get to the desktop and everything works fine. Can even run screen at 120Hz. I ran diagnostics on the card, checked drivers.. everything is reading correctly. This is workable, but far from an ideal solution as I need to have a cable and some kind of HDMI screen available just to boot up every time. I have two option here and I'm hoping someone can provide a little guidance one way or the other. I can either fix the boot looping issue on "Legacy Rom - disabled" (it hangs on classpnp.sys when I try safe mode if that information helps at all). OR, I need to find a way for it to post when "Legacy Rom - enable" without connecting to an HDMI device (just plugging in the cable doesn't work. It has to be connected to something on the other end). For the first, I have tried start up repair and tried repairing using my WIN 7 disc but it doesn't actually pull up the menu. It just shows the windows loading screen and then freezes after a while. For the second I have tried changing different video options in hopes it will post on boot without connecting to an external or tried to find a way to keep the HDMI port active without something being in it. I can make no progress with either of these as I'm unaware exactly what exaclty the selections change. I currently have it set to PEG. Also, I have tried bios reset through removing all power sources and the 2032 CMOS and holding power button 30 seconds. Didn't help. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to ask any questions you have that could assist in ascertaining the source of the problem in either instance. As a last resort, I could go back to 10, but I would really rather not. The R4 (in Dell's words) isn't being tested for compatibility. Many features don't seem to work, and overall I just much prefer 7.
  4. Hey guys, I know I've seen many forums covering this topic (including this one) but I just recently installed the 980m in my M17x R4 with the 120Hz screen. I found an interesting trick that helped tremendously. Just wanted to share in case it may benefit someone else. I won't include all of the steps to the process as those are thoroughly covered elsewhere. Okay, so you have the card (980m) installed but it doesn't recognize it yet (no drivers / need to change bios settings etc.) meaning that you immediately get the 8 beep error on startup. A lot of forums say you need to reinsert your old graphics card to access menus, then switch it back to 980m. I've found that through using the HDMI out and connecting to another screen, it will actually stop the 8 beeps and you regain post. It will post only on your laptop, not the screen connected through HDMI. I believe this is due to the 120Hz not being supported when connected to an external screen, it makes it function as a 60Hz and seems to resolve the 8 beep posting issue making it possible to change your settings and even install the (modified) drivers on the desktop. I hope this helps to ease someone else's process in the future.
  5. Hi. I have problem with my Alienware m18x R2. My GTX 675m broke and Mainboard shorted due to water condensation. (Don't ask how:distress:) Power Adapter plugged to motherboard without any components like CPU or RAM plugged in to it caused blue light of power adapter to switch off. I've ordered refurbished board from seller that claimed that he get it from Dell. When I've plugged everything up without GPU(running on Intel Integrated) laptop started for a second (Fans spinning, Fx light on, but nothing on screen. Only backlight) and after this it turned off. I've turned it back on and same situation however this time it gave me one beep code( BIOS/ROM corruption). Clearing CMOS resulted in story repeating. Laptop turn on -> Turn off -> I've turned it back on -> one beep code. I've checked RAM by using alone one module at time in different ports, Unplugged any component or device one by one, I've tried blind flashing to A03 but no luck. Replaced refurbishment board for another one from same seller but same story. Motherboard without CPU gave me 7 beeps what is I suppose normal without CPU. I wonder if problem could be because original shorted board was REV A00 and refurbished is REV A01. Also I wonder if shorted board could cause damage to CPU and now it is preventing machine from post. Unfortunately I don't have way to test CPU now. I wonder if this board would post with 3rd, 2nd or 1st generation i5 because I may be able to get it for test. Specs: i7-3610qm 6gb RAM (2GB+4GB) BROKEN GTX 675M 500gb HDD 240W power adapter BIOS on refurbished board A11 Please could someone help me?
