  1. 3dMark11 Performance Preset Benchmark: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/11262792 Required items: 1.) Lenovo u310 (I have a Core i3 - Ivy Bridge, 8GB RAM) 2.) 65CN99WW unwhitelisted. 3.) eGPU (I used a EVGA GTX 750 Ti from another computer I had). 4.) EXP GDC mPCIe Edition adapter (got from eBay - banggood seller). 5.) ATX power supply (I used a 600W PSU from another computer I had). 6.) USB wireless. 7.) External monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Steps: 1.) Obtain and install a unwhitelisted BIOS. If you are unable to obtain a unwhitelist BIOS, I think it might be possible to bypass it with Tech Inferno Fan's Setup 1.x (may need confirmation as I haven't used it myself yet.) 2.) Shutdown computer and remove all USB devices, ethernet cables, power cables, card reader cards. 3.) Remove mPCIe wireless card and detach antennas. 4.) Attach EXP GDC external mPCIe cable to the former wireless slot and screw down. 5.) Attach HDMI end of the mPCIe cable adapter to the EXP GDC device. 6.) Attach graphics card to the EXP GDC device (I moved my laptop off the desk and onto the side shelf to make room on the desk for the monitor/keyboard/mouse). 7.) Using the power cable adapters that came with the EXP GDC device, I hooked in my ATX power supply's 20 pin and CPU 4 pin cables. Then hooked the other end (8 pin) into the EXP GDC device. My EVGA 750 Ti also required that I use an additional PCIe power cable (6 pin) in the top of the card. 8.) Then I attached my misc devices (HDMI monitor, USB keyboard/mouse/wireless adapter), and hooked in my PSU and powered it on (below is image of final product, also moved HDMI cable out of the way). 9.) Power on your computer and let it install the standard VGA drivers and then install your drivers (I didn't have to go in the BIOS for any graphics settings, which it doesn't have anyways, nor did I have to disable iGPU in Device Manager before the card was added). Extra Info: I found that most games will play on med settings with about 45 FPS with this particular card. BDO: Upscale on - Anti Aliasing on - SSAO off - med settings. Skyrim: Med-High settings. I therefore kindly ask of you not to spew out the fact that its impossible to build a laptop at me but instead attempt to help me to make this somewhat possible for the next person interested in the idea.   3. Hello everyone I created a case for egpu using 2.5mm acrylic sheets. The first time I created a case to support a GPU + ATX psu Now I created another one for the GPU with an external Xbox 360 203w psu. the finish was not good but for my use it is already good. *both cases album *Construction of the second case *adapting xbox psu to 8pin power (taken from 24pin) all made by hand with the tools I had. from Brazil.
  4. I bought this thingy-mabob so I can try an egpu build. It's an Sonnet Echo Pro Adapter. what it does is it able to connect to expresscard devices over thunderbolt. I bought the Pe4c (which is the thing to put your gpu at) and I put in an old gt 640 (yes it works). I crossed my fingers AND I prayed but all this shit does is make the fans spin at like 1000rpm (I got a nice little personal fan now). I tried updating BIOS and disabling dGPU I even fresh installed my computer (goodbye porn ) Anyway, I wanted to do this because in the long run, it would have saved me money instead of buying a new computer. All I would have needed to do was buy a new gpu and BAM! 4K gaming. But if anyone wanna help my sorry ass, please do so. I wanna play BF1 but 4 year old gpu is crap. Please anyone with knowledge of this subject or maybe even the legendary Nando4 can help. Thanks.
  5. Hi everyone, I have an unusual request. I have an i7-3940xm in my M17xr4 and it's difficult to keep cool. I have already done the m14x fan mod and I'm using Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut thermal compound... it's just not enough. The CPU is constantly being throttled (my bios settings in a11 unlocked are set to throttle it 85 C) when under load, and it will sometimes see temperatures in the mid to high 90s. The maximum operating temperature is rated at 105C, and I have a thermal shutdown set in bios for 100C, which it hasn't yet reached (but it gets scary close). Even when throttled, it's still an upgrade and runs better then the stock 3630qm, but I don't wan't it to throttle all of the time. I know I could underclock it, but what's the point of having an upgraded CPU if you're just going to downclock it to similar specs as the original (baring cache, of course). At idle, by the way, it jumps around mid 50s to high 60s. Anyway, to keep it cool, I want to try using a peltier cooler. They're thermoelectric ceramic devices of which one side gets hot and the other gets cold when an electric current goes through them, for those who didn't already know. I figure I can sandwich it between my cpu and the heatsink and try to help keep the cpu's temps a little more reasonable. I have one of a workable size which can withstand temps of up to 135C, and I've done the math with it's specs so that it hopefully knocks 25ish degrees off while at full load and not overheat the peltier doing so. This leads me to my question/request; I need to know if anyone would know a place on the motherboard which supplies voltage when the laptop is running, but not when it's off, whether or not the charger/battery is connected? I have found a few good sources on the MB which can withstand the drain, but they're always hot, even when the laptop is off. I have a multimeter and have been probing, but I don't want to disassemble half the laptop and attempt running it in pieces to verify a good source. If no one knows off hand or has any idea, does anyone know of any schematics or files which exist which contain voltage information of various contacts on the m17x r4 motherboard? I know this is a strange request and most will not be able to assist, but before taking it all the way apart to probe around I thought I would at least ask. I'll make a write-up on how it's done and how well it works if it's successful, as well as a controller circuit if necessary using a teensy 2.0 or something.
  6. I have a Dell Precision M6800 and I would like to build an eGPU for it as the Nvidia Card is getting a bit old. I have a Xbox 360 Slim lying around. Would it be possible for me to use the Xbox’s GPU ?

The lenovo y510p has no thunderbolt or express card but it does come with their own ultrabay technology by which you can add another graphics card inside a socket which hold in place of the DVD drive once you take it out. Apparently the ultrabay is a pcie 3 implementation. So I was thinking if its possible to DIY eGPU. I think besides the basic setup of eGPU one might need a specialized connector for the Ultrabay. Has anyone done it. Can anyone guide me to DIY?
  8. Hi there, I'm new to the forum but I've been reading some post from it since long ago. I just wanted to know certain things that I wasn't able to find trough the forum searcher. I'm thinking about putting an eGPU to my Lenovo B50-50. I don't do heavy gaming, I mean, the heaviest game I like to run is warface (Idk if u guys know it) and I will be more than happy if I could get it to run at 60stable fps at medium.   10. So I'm planning on building an egpu setup due to the fact that I want desktop performance, while I am unable to build a desktop. My main concern is of the thunderbolt port and jack, which is obviously superior to the express card. It is my goal to use my current laptop (Lenovo y50, https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-15-6-Inch-Gaming-Laptop-59425944/dp/B00K6ZIMPE) however, it doesn't have a port for thunderbolt. Are there any adapters that I can use?   11. Hello everyone! I am currently working on an egpu/docking station project for my 2015 macbook pro, and I am having some issues mounting everything into the case I've chosen. So far, I have gotten it to work with my windows 10 installation (on an external samsung evo ssd inside the mini-itx case) with my gtx 970, but now I am trying to actually mount the akitio thunder2 board and the graphics card inside a mini itx enclosure. The power supply, hard drives, and usb hub are already mounted inside of the case with plenty of room left. The graphics card has to mount in the slot that it would use if there was a mini itx motherboard in the case, because it won't fit anywhere else. Here are my problems: If you look at the first attached image, this is the graphics card mounted where it would go normally. It is currently only being held in by the two screws holding the IO side of the card onto the case. As you can see in image 2, the pcie connector is underneath the card and very close to the bottom of the case. I bought a pcie riser, but having it being under the card and bent to the side put it under too much stress, and the cable tore. It also pushed the graphics card up so that it was just barely able to mount in place. What I decided I needed was a right-angle for the pcie connection, but every one I found online, and I mean EVERY ONE, went the wrong way (left instead of right) , which put the connecter against the wall of the case, making it worse. Can someone help me find a right angle adapter that bends the correct way, or find another solution? I accidentally bought this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007Q92R7M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but it was not the pcie connector on my graphics card. It was a little different. Another problem is that the akitio thunder2 board has issues with facing the right way. If you look in picture 3, you can see the board in its enclosure. In order for the pcie connector to be oriented the same as the graphics card, the board has to be mounted so that the black plastic pcie connector is closest to the graphics card, and unfortunately, facing away. Also, the thunderbolt ports and power port end up smushed against the wall of the case, or close to it? Again, how can I fix this? I was so excited to get this project working and am now having a headache trying to make it all fit together! This community has been absolutely excellent in helping me get my egpu working, and I cannot thank those that have taken the time to make guides enough.   12. Hi guys, I write this guide to remind myself how to setup the system and sorry for my bad english. it’s not my mother language. At first after I read many threads I was confused which method should I use and found out that Apple computer those were released after MacBook Air mid 2013 will have UEFI for the Bootcamp and all Apple computer’s released before will use BIOS. This would determine the method you have to use. For Windows 8.1 will use UEFI by default if it capable. For Windows 7 will use BIOS by default. The BIOS method do need DIY eGPU Setup 1.x from @Tech Inferno Fan so please donate if you want to use it. The UEFI method doesn’t need it so you can setup it easier than BIOS (If I understand correctly) Things you will need: Hardware - MacBook pro 15” 2012 (non retina) 650m with TB1 - Akitio TB2 Box - Inno3d GTX 960 (This manufacturer is not so famous in US but it’s the cheapest in my country which still cost around $216 included tax) - Silverstone SFXL 500w - PCI x16 riser with Molex you can find it from eBay - Dell U2414H with Displayport - Apple Thunderbolt Cable 2m (Akitio does include the cable but it’s too short) Software - Windows 8.1 Pro - DIY eGPU Setup 1.x - Latest GPU Driver from website Configuration: Hardware - Connect Graphic card to PCI riser female >>> Connect PCI riser male to Akitio >>> Connect Akitio TB to Mac - Connect PSU molex male to PCI riser Molex female >>> Connect PSU 6 Pin to Graphic card - Connect Display port cable from Graphic card to Monitor - Do Paper clip trick for the PSU Software - Install DIY eGPU Setup 1.x from @Tech Inferno Fan it will extract to your c:\eGPU - Go to c:\eGPU, right click "setup-disk-image" select "Run as administrator" then reboot - Choose DIY eGPU Setup 1.x from your boot screen (Before Windows start) - Press 2 to select “Menu Based Setup” (don’t press anything else it will freeze the system) - Go to initialize and select eGPU. This will create the startup.bat file. - Go to PCIe compaction and choose a 3.87GB/32-bit PCIe compaction on ALL except SATA+.. with closeunusedbridges = off .(no root sign) This will create the required pci.bat file. - In my and karthikrajanv’s cases this will freeze our Macbook saying "Remove disk a, Insert disk b" at the end of the compaction if it is, please following this: - Force Shutdown by holding power button - Reboot into DIY eGPU Setup 1.x again - Go to PCI Compaction > Edit pci.bat and change all a:x.x and b:x.x to 0a:x.x and 0b:x.x (Beware the letters must be stick together not a space between them) then press F10 and go to File and Save or just press Ctrl+S then Go to Test Run and test it - See if the right side of the menu shows “PCI Write” and “all_alloc (256MB)” are “YES” - Reboot to DIY eGPU 1.x Setup again this time press 6 (Chainload using MBR) it will go to boot screen then press 1 “Automated Startup via Startup.bat” then boot to Windows 8.1 In Windows 8.1 - The Intel HD4000 will not be able to use. - Go to Nvidia Control Panel >>> Set up multiple displays from the left menu. - Choose which display you want to use eGPU only or both then click Apply Booting eGPU - Turn on MacBook Pro and select DIY eGPU Setup 1.x - Choose eGPU in Initialize like Software Setup - Test run (not necessary but for making sure) - Go to Chainloader and press Test then press 6 (Chainload using MBR) it will go to boot screen then press 1 “Automated Startup via Startup.bat” then boot to Windows 8.1 Troubleshooting Like karthikrajanv’s post. My system has the same problem while starting eGPU sometimes (many) MacBook Pro will not boot in to BIOS. It will freeze at the white screen after the chime even I press alt to choose the drive it still freeze after I choose Bootcamp (though I can go to OS X without any problem). At first I thought my problem is different and I almost give up on eGPU but after many tries I found 3 solutions that might work 1. Boot up normally if lucky it will go straight to select boot Windows or DIY 2. If it freeze try disconnect yellow and black wire from Akitio like karthikrajanv’s post and replug at Menu Based (But mine still can’t find eGPU after that even though I press F5, weird?) 3. If it freeze try disconnect yellow and black wire from Akitio shutdown both Akitio and MacBook Pro boot up everything then reconnect the yellow black cable These give me 2/5 times for successfully boot into Windows with eGPU so I’m okay with this and waiting for refresh of the next MacBook Pro to replace this one with less hassle. LOL edit: I tried using 90 degree riser between the card to raiser and the booting performance is greatly increased. It's now almost no problem at boot up.   13. Hi, I'm new to this site and I want build my own eGPU for my laptop enhance the graphics for games. My problem is, I have the Lenovo z50 laptop with an AMD a10 processor. My problem is that I don't know if the laptop has a mPCIe. I'm not exactly sure what that is. I'm really bad at computer stuff. Any help with what I want to do would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
  14. I was looking at the products over at BPlus and HWtools main websites and was wondering "Why would a company make so many ends for the same adapter?!" For example if you want to order a PE4C v3.0 adapter, you MUST choose one end to it, mPCIe or ExpressCard or PCI-E . You CAN'T have an all in one version. This way you - as the customer - end with a product that only works with a specific type of ports. And they - as the selling company - have to lose more on making different types of ends for adapters. So, I made some research and found this amazing product Link HERE . Which basically serves as an adapter from ExpressCards ports to mPCIe or to the normal PCI-E port. Now you can get a mPCIe eGPU adaptor that can be connected to your mPCIe through ExpressCard slots Without removing you WLAN. Maybe you are using you EC slot, maybe you don't want to get an adaptor that only works with an EC slot. Whatever your reason is, I found this to be the solution. And now you can use the same eGPU adapter for different laptops (one with EC, and one with mPCIe/PCI-E) I'm sure there are more adapters that can have all the possible combinations of ports, but this one is just the start, I haven't searched for more yet. I'm sure there is a cheaper one, or someone who can make a cheap one of the same type. HWTools should consider doing this. Just wanted to share what I've found. Edit: Maybe title needs to change to mPCIe/PCI-E to ExpressCard adaptor? :/ I don't know. But you get it my friends.

Hello, I soldered a NGFF connector to my laptop's motherboard a few days ago, and I installed a 128GB MyDigitalSSD SSD and it is not being detected in the BIOS, and I can't find it in the disk management either. I called Lenovo technical support the day before soldering it and they told me that installing the connector should be enough, no additional ICs or controllers are required, and I called them again yesterday, and they told me that they don't have access to such very technical information I tried a few solutions,including : 1. Switching the boot to Legacy instead of UEFI.(Stopped working since I updated the BIOS yesterday) 2. Reinstalled the chipset driver. 3. Installed ExpressCache and it didn't work either. Note: The SSD seems like it is getting power since it is heating up while I'm using the PC. Q1: Is there a way to know whether the connector is recognized by the device? Q2: I bought a NGFF to SATA connector to check whether the SSD is defective, but its arriving in a month from now, so is there any other way to do that without using any equipment? Thanks, Hush
