2. First I want to thank the community, who have inspired me to do this project. I will give you guys the chance to follow me on this journey. I hope you will all help me come up with ideas, techniques and parts that could become handy. This modding may be possible to convert to allot of laptops. Let's begin! Here is the measurement of the went hole. 77mm X 16mm I have 2 ideas for what can be done.
3. Patched this together on request, M18x R1 BIOS A05 (unlocked) with the RST 11.5 OROM. The orom comes from the station-drivers site, not sure whether it will work fine with the M18x, though I don't really see why it shouldn't. Btw, something's weird with the original orom in the R1 BIOS, the checksum is wrong... confusing. Anyway, here's the BIOS, let me know how it performs. Also remember to use the latest RST driver for this ROM. Flash with your favorite BIOS utility or the tools provided by Dell. As always, use at your own risk. Download link:

6. Hi everyone, I am having issues with my gtx 880m. I currently have a m18x r1 unlocked a05 bios and modded drivers (368.69 also tired 372.90) basically when im playing battlefront the game plays for about 1 min, and then crashes and I got this direct x error message on screen (shown in pic below) I managed to fix this error by turning on vertical sync in settings in the game and also in the nvidia control panel (it was set to auto, or adaptive and I changed this to on), and this fixed this create texture error. Now I am getting a completely new error and I was able to play the game for now more than 1 min, usually around 10-12 mins before crashing, i am now seeing a new error, directx function "DX11 Renderer::tryMap" failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED ("The video card has been physically reomved from the system, or a driver upgrade for the video card has occurred. "). I have tried to change drivers, change clock speeds, turn off overclocking and running everything on low, I have also tried to delete the ndvi64.api file from system32 as suggested in an ea forum, and still no luck. Anyone else had this error? took me 3 days to finally get the gtx 880m to work in the mx18 r1 and now the only game that plays is battlefield, which works floorlessly on ultra for 4+ hours game play constantly with no issues. but its just when I play battlefront it crashes ive tried to even do the directx web installer to install latest files and still didnt work.. any help would be appreciated and im sure would help out alot of mx18r1 users or gtx 880m users out there. thanks then I managed to fix this error
7. After removing the Edge-to-Edge glass cover from my beast today, I was surprised to discover the anti glare screen behind it! No graininess and no reflections! I cracked and scratched the E2E glass in the process but it was well worth the trouble since am not going to need it anyway. Finally an AW machine where I don't have to look at my face reflection all day, lol!
8. Documentation Take a look at those heatpipes! *phew!* 3 thick heapipes per GPU. This thing can easily take a couple of 485m's. The questions remain: Power Circuitry? is it going to be enough? (probably) Bios whitelisting? Will the bios block non-approved cards? (also, probably) I am moving in August, and my job contract ends in July, so I will be buying my m18x in sept-oct this year. If by then they still dont have the 485m sli as a selection, my plan is to: Buy the base config with 460m sli from USA Buy the 485m sli pair from logicalblueone (local supplier) and MAKE IT WORK ??? Profit! Im sure someone will want to buy an SLI pair of 460m's somewhere on ebay if I can get it to work, but overall, I'm excited and hopeful! I was in doubt about the 485m's until I saw the cooling. It looks monstrous! As soon as I know everything is all working, I am going to proceed to see if I can do any cooling improvements to this behemoth. It will be interesting to see if they learned from all our work on the M17x-R2. -Ash
9. I didn't realize this so far, but BIOS A03 for the M18x R2 is up on the Dell support site. According to the date there it got released the same day as the M17x R4 BIOS A05. So this might fix the GPU software overclocking issue as A05 did on the R4... would be interesting to hear! No change log included on the website... really a bad practice Dell started here, back in the early M17x R2 and M15x days they included a highly detailed change log as .txt file, they really should bring this back. Alienware-Frank_L , Alienware-Luis_Pardo or any other AW representative here... do you have any insights on the change log? 10. Credit goes to lubu for creating a hack to work around this overlay message. Currently there is no real solution from Dell/nVidia and I doubt there will be one anytime soon. Purpose of method: To replace a bitmap file in nvstres.dll that contains the red overlay with the "prototype test only. nVidia confidential" while in 3D mode. Download PE Explorer Add in the replacement bitmap (see attached) Steps 1. Install and open PE explorer 2. Load your nvstres.dll file which is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\3D Vision (select All Files in File Types) 3. Click on Resource Viewer/ Editor 4. Go to Bitmap folder and select 201 (this is the template of the warning msg) 5. Double clicks on 201 a new window should appear allowing you to edit the file 6. Open the replace201 bitmap file 7. Close the editor and save it as nvstres1.dll (for some reasons it wont allow me to save over the old file) 8. Delete the original nstres.dll and rename the new one as nvstres.dll 9. Restart your laptop These steps will have to be repeated each time the driver is updated to a new one. replace201.zip
11. Some of us will be receiving the M18x today so we'll be posting up pics, videos and impressions in this thread. Stay tuned! Phew just finished the unboxing video and inspecting the system for flaws, so far I haven't found any *knock on wood*. After I edit the video I'll toss it up on youtube. Quick impressions: I've owned Alienware M15x, M17x-R2, M17x-R3 so I'm no stranger to Alienware systems. Display 7.5/10 I know I've made a big fuss over the display but I will admit this is a decent display. For those expecting a 90% gamut panel, don't count on it. It looks very similar to the M17x-R3 72% gamut panel which isn't bad, just not the best. It is not as bright as the M17x-R2 panel nor does it come close with respect to color reproduction. The contrast ratio isn't the best to be honest, it could have been better. That said, it is a pretty good panel (better than most notebooks) and very few people will have complaints. Those of you that haven't experienced an RGB LED won't be missing anything. Build 10/10 Alienware took the best of the Alienware M17x-R2 and improved upon it. It is anodized aluminum like it's predecessor but also boasts a superior palm rest (soft touch rubber which seems higher quality than the R3). I have no complaints at all, it is Alienware's best built system thus far. Weight 9/10 M17x-R2 owners will feel comfortable with the M18x, the weight is very similar. Because the M18x is wider, the weight is more spread out so it actually feels lighter than the R2 when you hold it or put it on your lap. I do not feel that build quality should be sacrificed for weight therefore I feel compelled to give Alienware high marks for building such a high quality system while maintaining a reasonable weight. Sound 7.5/10 The sound beats the M17x-R2 and M17x-R3. Once you adjust the wavemaxx settings in the IDT control panel, it is crisp and loud. The subwoofer produces decent bass although it could be a bit better. If the volume was a bit louder I'd have given it an 8/10. Keyboard 9/10 Feels solid, not much if any flex and the keys are fairly responsive. The alienware fx lighting is uniform. My only complaint is a hollow sound when you type because of the ram slots underneath. Media Panel 8/10 Very responsive, feels great and I don't miss the capactive buttons from R2 at all. I wish the they were a bit more understated so I'm docking 2 points for that. Design 9/10 Alienware took the best elements of the M17x-R1/R2/R3 and built the M18x and it shows. If they had an IPS panel and slightly better sound, the system would probably be their best system ever made. But what's up with removing the color configuration from the alien head?? 12. Alienware M18x Laptop Review - Introduction Not the best review IMO. They didn't really discuss the cooling, benchmarks were done with a single GPU, the gaming benchmarks were limited and the sample configuration Dell sent them was completely stupid. *EDIT* Read Tech|Inferno's official M18x review here: http://www.techinferno.com/2011/07/07/alienware-m18x-review-the-fastest-18-notebook-in-the-universe/
13. Wait...wait...wait...for the AW M18x to be released. While I wait for this beast to hit the market, I would like to know what the best GPU option is. Both of these cards get great reviews but here are some points I have found. Nvidia seems to have the best driver support but tends to produce more heat and the AMD runs a little cooler and does not offer 3D support (although the M18 may not support 3D). It seems to me that driver support is very important for the future of you rig. I will be using my lappy for basic gaming, web browsing, and movies. Here is the comparison chart: Comparison of Laptop Graphics Cards - Notebookcheck.net Tech Also, here is an AW M18x slideshow: YouTube - Alienware M18x "Avenger" Edit: I know the 485M has not shown up, but all indicators point to it becoming available.
