You know, I really hate myself, I do. I swore to myself this time, "don't fall for NVIDIAs shit, you can resist the temptation of Titan X". So I held out, bought a 1080 thinking "ok I got this!". What helped even more was it was constantly out of stock on their website. So tonight I just check it for shits and giggles and what do you know, it's in stock. My finger starts twitching and I'm thinking, "oh fuck no you aren't!" and the next thing I know, I'm at the checkout process w/next day shipping. God damn you NVIDIA! I know in a few months I'll look back on this post and think, "damn I'm an idiot" but what the hell. Update a day later (today): It arrived this afternoon and it's definitely an impressive card. My biggest gripe is I have to set the fan to 90% when its boosting to 2 ghz in order to keep it from going above 80c. Since I game with headphones on, that's not a big deal for me. In overwatch with the gtx 1080 @ 2.05 ghz and 1440p max settings I wasn't able to get above 90-95 fps. This card stays in the 130-144 fps range which is perfect for my display. Hi, I am trying to run a GTX 970 as eGPU in my Dell XPS L502 and I ampassing through an specific problem. I'll sum up here what I did until now. For those who don't want to know this and go direct to the issue, my problem is with the PCI Compatcion, and yes, I'd already did the DSDT override. Well, back to what I already done (any difficulty to understand my text, it's because of my lack of practice in these kind of topics in english). I bought an EXP GDC Laptop External Independent Video Card Dock w/ PCI-E at DX.com; I am running the DYI eGPU 1.30, everything is installed correctly, etc. Specs/setup: Gigabyte GTX970 Gaming 1 x EXP GDC PCI-E adapter 1 x Mini PCI-E cable (80cm Length) 1 x ATX PSU power cable (11cm Length) Dell XPS L502x i7-2670 QM 16 Gb Ram 1333MHz SSD 480Gb + 750Gb Sata NVidia 540M 2Gb Considerations: If I restart/start my laptop with the eGPU On, I'll get black screen. But it works if I turn on the eGPU when it gives the option to select between the DYU and OS to start. At the DYI eGPU setup screen, I did these steps: call iport dGPU off call iport g1 1 call vidwait 60 10de:11c6 call vidinit -d 10de:11c6 call chainload mbr But when I am going to do the PCI compaction, it is not working, and I have tried a lot of different configurations. I searched what could I do, and I found the comment from andhie133128 in the page techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/5874-guide-dsdt-override-to-fix-error-12/&page=3 talking about the DSDT override and then loading the DSDT.aml updated file at the DOS in the DYI's setup screen with the command "PT MEM writefromfile 1 0xBAFF2000 DSDT.aml". Why 0xBAFF2000? Its what I have found with the RW-Everything software as my DSDT memory. As told in that post, I'd compacted the .aml with a smaller size than the original (from 36kb to 35kb - it's something =p) and then loaded it at the DOS. Everything worked fine, the " large memory showed up, no error at DOS, everything went well. The eGPU is recognized, I am able to stop my dGPU at the DYI setup screen, initialize the eGPU, the large memory is showing in my device manager, I am able to do the DSDT override (note: its easier to compact the file with an older version of the iasl), I'd imported and loaded it at DOS, but the PCI Compaction insists in not work. What I didn't and that may be the problem. I had not installed yet the gtx 970 driver before the PCI Compation and don't know if this have something related to the PCI compaction problem. Why didn't I tried it yet? I am with a huge amount of work now and I am using my laptop everyday and need some GPU to work, then I am keeping my 540M driver and was thinking in uninstall it when the PCI Compation works; or when I get done with my extra work and don't need so much the laptop everyday. One day, in the past (it's not my first time trying to do it), I went able to do the PCI compaction (only one time), and I think I did it when I used a different memory at the "PT MEM writefromfile" command. I think I confused something and used this memory instead: "ACPI -> RSDP -> 0x000F00E0; But few days later I had to format windows OS and lost the configuration. I had done the same steps that I told to be able to do that. But even with the PCI compaction done that time, I had formated the laptop before setting the eGPU to work 100%... Why didn't I have tried it again? Same problem, I am using the laptop everyday and in doubt about what can happen if I use this other memory. I don't even know for what this RSDP is used for. I found this topic from rossysaurus (https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/6413-17-dell-xps-l702x-gtx9704gbpsc-mpcie2-pe4c-21-win7-rossysaurus/) and I will try the same steps. But in case someone already had the same issues that I'm having, please help me solve this.

Y500 650M Overclock Thread I can not find any of my 3dmark keys... EVGA deleted them I guess. So I am using Valley from Uni Engine. I so far have a stable clock at 969mhz Core 2500mhz Mem Score on Extreme HD 1046 Stays around 70c. Increased playability of games a whole hec of a lot. But I have noticed small artifacts so I may either see if its throttling down, or if it just happens to be to high a mem clock maybe lower the cor to 950 and keep mem up. Let me know all your experiences! I did this with Afterburner, and of course unlocked bios. Nothing special though. No CP changes, or driver tweaks. I used to be much in to benchmarking but now I look at it this way, my car may go 150 but really where can I use it at that speeds?! So playability is where I am at on this project. I will update this accordingly, I may get a cooler, put IC Diamond compound on the parts, and ThrottleStop it. These cards can run good around 70-75c without much problems. Update your findings here as well!

Hello forums of techinferno, I currently have a 13' 2015 macbook pro and have allways wanted a egpu to make it much more powerful. Every were I have searched people use mainly the AKiTiO Thunder2 box for connecting the gpu, this also brings many problems like the board not having enough power to supply to the card. And i am not into the idea of soldering the mains I have seen workarounds like the 'PCI-E 6-Pin to DC Barrel Plug' b but throwing on to the already 200 price tag seems like a lot… not to mention the thunder box not being big enough for some computers. So my question is what about the EXP GDC Beast? There is a mac version, however it requires opening my mac. as some one who also uses it as a laptop i do not like that idea a whole lot. Well i know that the exp gdc connects via a hdmi cord 'as strange as it sounds' to a number of things like Expresscard and mini pci-e, Yes i know there is a expresscard to thunderbolt adaptor but can i take it a step further and go strait from thunderbolt to hdmi? these are my main questions 1 does any one have experence with the exp gdc, and 2 can I go strait from hdmi to thunderbolt 2. The reasons that I like the exp gdc is a it can be powered strait of a power supply and it is cheap roughly $50 USD which is a great value. Hello everyone! I finally got my eGPU setup working after many endless hours, and decided to write and implementation guide for users struggling with similar setups. Notebook Details 13" Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E330 i3-3120M 2.5Ghz HD4000 iGPU 8 GB RAM Windows 8.1 eGPU Gear EXP GDC Beast v8.0 eGPU adapter with mPCIe cable lead 450W Corsair CX450M PSU Gainward GTX 670 Phantom edition 2GB GDDR5 225W TDP Performance Results will include later Now for the build itself... Implementation Guide As Lenovo Thinkpad Edge's TOLUD is 3,5GB leading to Windows error 12, and Lenovo is well known for using whitelisting, the build might seem like a lost cause. However when there is a will, there will eventually be a way. 1.Error 12 !!! DO A BACKUP FIRST !!! To overcome the error 12 I followed the guide on this thread: Windows 8.1 and 10 users please note that you have to run the following command as and Admin user in command prompt bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON 2.Whitelisting Now we only have to overcome the whitelisting. The only way to overcome it elegantly is with a bios mod. However you are only able to install bios mod if you have bios version 1.09 or older as Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E330's bioses 1.12-> have EEPROM write protection thus installing a bios mod requires certain flashing device and an skilled user. As bios modding is a dangerous thing to do, and can lead into a seriously overpriced paperweight (your laptop!!), I myself didn't feel the urge to do it. I settled for hotswapping: Boot the laptop with whitelisted WIFI card attached > Boot into setup 1.30 menu > hit F5 > carefully remove the WIFI card and attach the eGPU and voila! Setup 1.30 should now detect your eGpu 3.Booting to windows After succesfully completing a DSDT override, and overcoming the whitelisting, now what is left to do is to boot into Setup 1.30 (using above hotswapping method or not if you have a bios mod) and run a pci compaction 36-bit on eGPU and then chainload to windows and start gaming (YEAHH!!!! THAT'S RIGHT BITHCES) #OPTIONAL# (4.Almost forgot) As Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E330 has an half-miniPCIe slot I removed a tiny piece of plastic to make the EXP GDC mPCIe adapter fit better #OPTIONAL# I myself got a huge gaming boost out of this and enjoyed doing it, however your mileage may vary... Thanks to: @Tech Inferno Fan for setup 1.30 and eGPU threads @angerthosenear for DSDT override guide

Well the inevitable has happened as a result of the GTX 970's 4 GB controversy. Someone has filed a class action lawsuit against NVIDIA and Gigabyte over deceptive marketing practices with respect to the GTX 970 alleging that they (NVIDIA) purposely marketed the card as having 4 GB Ram, 2048 KB L2 and 64 ROP when in fact it has 3.5 GB useable ram with 0.5 "spillover" and 1792 KB L2 + 56 ROPs in reality. It also states over 8100 people have filed a grievance with the FTC: The lawsuit also attaches a bunch of images from NewEgg that purportedly show off advertising of 4 GB GDDR5 and other relevant technical details that they claim were misleading. Surprisingly, it doesn't allege that the card isn't a true 256 bit card in the suit, at least I couldn't find it. Here's the link to the lawsuit: Nvidia lawsuit over GTX 970

So guys, what's your thoughts on the new latest and greatest from Nvidia. According to benchmark results, posted by Nvidia on their official site and released at the conference, the GTX 1070 pulls slightly ahead of the Titan X, which is a pretty good feat. considering that it costs $359, will you guys be settling for this or the 1080?

I have been playing overwatch like crazy the past 2 weeks on my m17x r4 with 680M. Unfortunately since yesterday i am getting BSODs anytime i try to even access the dedicated 680M GPU. Starting any game or even starting the nvidia control panel and going to the 3D settings which renders the nvidia logo will cause a BSOD. I can't even downlock the GPU, everytime i try in nvidia inspector, it BSODs. I have tried reinstalling the driver, upgrading the driver, downgrading the driver, starting in A/C power both with and without battery, starting in battery only, shutting it down and leaving it for about 12 hours and nothing seems to fix this. Here is the imgur album of my BSODs (getting different numbers each time): http://imgur.com/a/wwRZp . If this is indeed graphics card failure, is there anyway i can get this repaired? I know i'm out of warranty, but does dell do repairs for payment? Unfortunately I'm a student at the near end of my studies and i'm flat broke so buying a new card is out of my budget [Around 200$]. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer me!

Hi, I would like to share my eGPU experience with EXP GDC V8 ExpressCard on my W520, Quad core i7, 12GB RAM, Quadro 2000M 2GB dedicated VRAM, Windows 10 Pro 64bit. last month after weeks of fails and errors, (specially the famous Error 43), i finally got my EXP GDC running using mPCIE version with NVIDIA Quadro 4000 for Mac (yes, for Mac!) I make it works by setting the PTD switch to 7s. But by the time Windows successfully detect my Q4000 i straught away hook up my external monitor (EIZO CG245W 24-inch) to my eGPU, then the system blinks, i assume it detect a display signal. but it wasnt. And my W520 suddenly shutdown. And i can not make it work again. Even after hundreds of time reinstall-uninstall NVIDIA Drivers with DDU it wont make it work again. So, at this point i switch the GPU to my Quadro 6000 6GB GDDR5, and repeat the last success process. Nothing happened. Our good friend Error 43 back again and stay there forever. In my desperate time, i finally ordered the ExpressCard signal Cable. While waiting it's enroute somewhere in China, I test the EXP GDC with my AJA Kona 3G 4K I/O Video Capture Card, and hey it's working! i can do Edit & Realtime Preview 4K RAW video files thru the card flawlessly, It utilized the card's hardware encoding, (4K RAW files from ARRI & RED Camera) as well as output 16-Channels 192KHz Audio signal from my DAW. (no additional 6-pin power required for this card) Then i test my both Quadro 4000 & Quadro 6000 GPU back to my HP Z800 workstation, guess what? They're both bricked! It received power, but system cannot boot up. Beeping. means GPU is faulty. The next day, my AJA Kona 3G card also bricked! Today the ExpressCard signal cable finally arrived along with my 6-pin + 6+2 pin, but again, when i use the ExpressCard setup it doesnt do anything. No power comes in to the EXP GDC. My 500W ATX PSU is running though, but the LED indicator on the EXP GDC not lit. i set the slot to Generation 1 power mode in BIOS. So, I've tried both mPCIe and ExpressCard on W520 with nothing but frustrations. Did i miss anything here? I appreciate any workaround on this. Since i've never found any eGPU setup with W520 anywhere in the net. specially using ExpressCard & a High end Quadro GPU. Here's my last config that i've managed to make Q4000 work: mPCIe method: BIOS: Whitelist latest BIOS 1.42 Power Management: Both for Processor and PCI set to Disabled Display Mode: Integrated Graphic OS Detection Mode for Optimus Graphic: Disabled PXE Boot and all Network Boot options including PCI LAN Boot order : Disabled Win 10: Device Manager: System Detect eGPU, Error 43 Uninstall NVIDIA Driver with DDU (safe mode) Reboot Check BIOS first, usually it will set back the Display to Optimus Mode, i Let it Boot in OPTIMUS MODE Make sure Graphic Card(s) is detected in Device Manager as a 'Basic Microsoft Display Adapter' Install Quadro driver for both Discreet Graphic & eGPU Reboot to BIOS Display Mode: Integrated Graphic OS Detection Mode for Optimus Graphic: Disabled Quadro 4000 for Mac successfully detected in Device Manager. Plug my external monitor to eGPU GPU Bricked ExpressCard Method: Same as mPCIe method ExpressCard Power mode: Generation 1 Nothing happened eGPU setup: EXP GDC Beast V8 500W ATX PSU DELL 220W Power Adapter (backup for small cards) PCIe 6pin+6pin+2 auxiliary power cable (backup spare) ExpressCard Signal Cable mPCIe Signal Cable [IMPORTANT NOTE]: You will know your graphic card is working fine when you power on your laptop, normally all Quadro cards fan spin at normal speed, then it will spin faster/accelerate for 3-4 sec at Windows logo, means the system & OS detects your card then it back to normal fan speed. During the setup, i often get my Quadro 4000 fan spin so freakin fast. Faster then the POST boot init, but then back to normal speed Bricked Quadro Graphic Card: Quadro 4000 Fan spin fast forever, while Quadro 6000 stays low speed. Thanks a lot!

Hi with the new Nvidia Pascal 1080 and 1070 Notebook chips coming very soon I am very excited to see benchmarks and have all the information. However I have ONE question about these new chips and I am sure that I am not the only one curious about this. Since Nvidia has confirmed that from now on we will not get "M" versions of the cards I am wondering if this means that standard format MXM format is going to be a thing of the past soon ? In other words I would like to know if the 1080 and 1070 (Notebook) are going to have a standard MXM format or an extra large format like the 980 (Notebook) If anyone here has any information about this even if it is unconfirmed rumors I would like to hear it. Having a Clevo P750DM-G I can always use a graphics amplifier plugged into the thunderbolt port but I would love to be able to upgrade my 980m to pascal at some point. I know this might be a bit to early to have any information about the chips but I am really curious about this. Thanks in advance for your replies. Cheers.

As you can see in the pictures, I had some trouble : cable direction is right towards mouse I had to cut a piece from my laptop to make room around mPCIe slot improvised higher stand for laptop to make room for the cable did not figure out how to make a confortable DYI case, yet eGPU setup 1.3 : check all hardaware is connected and ATX is set ON boot into BIOS > set video from "switchable" to "integrated" reboot boot into DYI Setup 1.3 choose 3rd option with menu-based startup.bat > Reset Chainloader > use mbr PCIe ports > hot reset port > nvidia PCIe ports > Gen2 link > nvidia (you should see a change in the right table : the alloc size goes from 128 to 512) PCIe compactation > endpoint > 56 25GB 36bit PCIe compactation > Run compact > eGPU > none startup.bat > test run chainloader > test run > win7 Benchmark : internal display used CPU hyperthreading enabled 3dmark might be inaccurate due to the warning from pictures GPU-z confirms x2 link speed Currently I play WOT, GTA 5 and they work flawless with at least high settings All in all, it does the trick and I am very satisfied with it. Most important, Acer temperature problem disappeared. On load, now I have max 55 Celsius on CPU and 44 Celsius on eGPU. Good luck ! Last edit : Just some update on what I have noticed. 1. On every boot you should : go to DYI eGPU Setup choose "menu-based" option PCIe ports > Gen2 link > nvidia (you should see a change in the right table : the alloc size goes from 128 to 512) startup.bat > test run chainloader > test run > win7 I always open Device Manager and GPU-Z to see if any problems occur I do this because the gen 2 link retraining is neccesary every time. 2. Sometimes my laptop kind of "forgets" about the eGPU. Not sure why, but rarely happens. To check if eGPU is still functional do this : check Device Manager for any problems on display open GPU-Z you might notice some of the options/informations are grayed out if so, go to Device Manager and disable/enable eGPU display.

Hey guys, does anyone have the spare time to mod my laptops BIOS so that I can remove the limit of the sliders in MSI Afterburner. So that I can go above a max of 135 on the core, have the voltage and power limit sliders unlocked etc. If it can be done for free, I would much appreciate it, and donate in the future when I get some money. If you can do the task, plz reply and I'll upload my BIOS backup to RGhost if that's the site you guys upload stuff to on this forum. Thanks in advance friends!

Hey all, I've been having this weird thing on my OS X installation (windows works fine) when using my egpu setup. At seemingly arbitrary times, I've been getting kernel panics. It happens when doing things like gaming, but also when editing text files and nothing else. I've attached my setup info and the most recent problem report below. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! Do you plan to upgrade to a new generation GPU?
Brian posted a topic in General Notebook Discussions
NVIDIA's Pascal is on it's way and should be available sometime in June based on current leaks. One of the first GPUs may be a full GDDR5x GP104 based GeForce 1080 GPU and we will almost assuredly have mobile variants shortly thereafter. AMD hasn't given us nearly as much information on Polaris except their performance/watt demo a few months ago but we're fairly certain it is priming for release as well. With the new generation of GPUs quickly approaching, do you plan to upgrade to either of them upon release? Why or why not? -
It’s about time we share first benchmarks of GeForce GTX 1080, new flagship graphics card that will be unveiled tomorrow by NVIDIA. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080, 8GB RAM GDDR5X at 10 GHz I think the most interesting detail about GTX 1080 is the new memory. NVIDIA has finally used 8GB ram for its flagship card. It’s no longer an exclusive to mobile solutions. Additionally, the GDDR5X modules are clocked at 2500 MHz (which is shown as 5000+ MHz in 3DMark). However the effective clock is 10000 MHz, which means the bandwidth is somewhere around 320 GB/s (assuming it’s 256-bit wide). On the GPU side we have a huge improvement in terms of frequencies. It is said that GTX 1080 can boost up to 1.8 GHz, with base clock around 1.6 GHz. At the time of writing we are not able to confirm the exact reference clock. For such reason I decided to avoid making comparison charts, so this post will essentially tell you what GTX 1080 is capable of and nothing more. NVIDIA Pascal Series (To be confirmed) May 5th 2016 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU 16nm FF GP104-400 16nm FF GP104-200 16nm FF GP100-890 CUDA Cores ? ? 3584 Memory Type 8GB GDDR5X 8GB GDDR5 16 GB HBM2 Base Clock ? ? 1328 MHz Memory Clock 2500 MHz 2000 MHz 352 MHz Effective Memory Clock 10000 MHz 8000 MHz 1408 MHz Memory Bus 256-bit 256-bit 4096-bit Memory Bandwidth 320 GB/s 256 GB/s 720 GB/s NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB — 3DMark11 Performance Like always, we are only looking at graphics score. 3DMark11 Performance preset is rendered at 1280×720 resolution. GeForce GTX 1080 scores 27683 points, which is still above overclocked GM200 cards (~23-25k). Worth noting 3DMark11 is not showing correct GPU clocks, however the new driver already supports GTX 1080 by its name. http://videocardz.com/59558/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-3dmark-benchmarks
