That's the loop to fool the vBIOS that an EC signal is present...wonder who told them that. ;)

Who would do that? Dont tell me its you...

If this is the case, I will underdo trans, give you a kiss, then switch back.

Now, to be completely fair... although I have nothing tangible to base it on... my belief is that they still make a genuine effort to produce well built notebooks with decent cooling systems, nice display panels and keyboards, but the bad things they have done negate the value of anything they bring to the table today. The gravity of the cons associated with owning an Alienware eclipse the pros in my opinion.

You are no longer the customer they are looking for. The new gen  dumb phone kids are the mainstream. They dont read about specs, they dont care, somehow they are holding much more budget than I do when I was at their age. On top of that, THEY CARE ABOUT THE LOOKS ONLY!

    My proof is: Linus whatever.

Alienware in the end is looking for profits, modable bios would result in lot of RMA.

    Ps

Im surprised there are not many returns on BGA shit gaming retarded laptops.

If you do not want or cannot afford a P870DM3 then I would recommend going back to desktop and totally abandoning laptops. I would say that it would be smart to sell the AW18 while it still works and has some value.

Based on the experience I had with the Sky X9 and my own P870DM-G, I would say that you don't know what you're missing out on. I really loved all of my Alienware machines. The P570WM and especially the P870DM-G caused me to totally lose all interest in them. Of course, Alienware being what they are today (soldered turdbook filth peddlers) leaves us with zero hope for an acceptable future and that probably played a huge part in building the utter contempt I have for them now.

The new AW (2016+) is a complete shit, no body can deny it. the problem with desktop is it is not an option for those who travel long distances or need portable machines for work.

I believe they cant last long on BGA gaming machine, the reason is cpu,gpu die will eventually be disconnected from the board due to thermal fatigue. In other words, the frequent temp change on solder balls will eventually break them and then the laptop would be bricked eventually. Such behavior can be observed in ps3,xbox 360, ps4. BGA gaming laptops will never last if the devices are operating in 70-80C

Yeah, it is really sad how bad things are now... almost everything available to buy new now is a piece of garbage. I would not consider buying any new model of "high performance" or "gaming" laptop now except for the P870DM3 and there is no telling whether they will keep on monkeying around with GPUs to interfere with future upgrades or what. I am very disgusted with the state of notebooks overall now. Without a fully unlocked CPU mounted in socket, I really don't care how nice the rest of the machine might be. It doesn't matter, because BGA filth ruins everything as far as I am concerned.

Its look like you are extra pissed off lately, I bought AW 18 on April 2015, Im pretty much in the same. Anyways, what is your recommendation on the current situation? I can sell the laptop for a good price (2000$ if Im lucky). I do currently have a haswell desktop with a decent asus motherboard in it. Should I wait for a custom built 1080 GTX MXM card? OR simply switch to the desktop route.

I sincerely love my Alienware, both internally and externally.

    Regards.

  4. Ok, this sounds extremely stupid but I figured out whats going on here. I notcied that the exhaust air of my 880m gpus are actually hotter than my cpu; for example, if both my cpu and gpu are running @ 80C, the exhaust fan of the gpu is hotter. This means that the heat is no longer traped inside and actually is being transferred to the air. Also, the gpu sink is noticeably hotter than the cpu sink! My conclusion is that for some stupuid reason, the sink is not making a good contact to the die! meaning I must find a good "thick" type paste, or somehow minimize this gab. Please help guys currently im running my stupid machine at 4.2Ghz @ 1.215v Max temp is 90-92 under cpu stress loads.

what are your xtu benchmark results? (the picture you attached only shows your xtu settings.)

I've been strongly considering buying a 4940MX to replace my 4810MQ.

  5. Bought an Alienware 18 recently for a good price, I always get lucky with GPU silicon lottery, but insanely unlucky with CPUs generally speaking. I managed to run my stupid 4940mx 4.2Ghz @ 1.21v. I would like you guys to comment on my results and confirm whether my chip is an absolute garbage or actually providing reasonable overclocking capabilities. Anyways, here is my XTU settings, and my core temp throughout the run.

    Thanks you.

  6. Well I guess that settles it. I'll get a Panther, then.

I do have a 4940mx CPU, and its a total garbage, extreme edition of mobile CPU is usually a miss. Panther is not an ergonomic laptop, but for sure its the best performance "laptop" out there. Also, 980m is really damn good, its actually not far away from the desktop ver. performance wise. At last, DONT GET 880m GTX, NVIDIA's BIGGEST SCAM!

Why techinfero is not notifying me when a thread I contributed to got updated with new posts?

  7. Cool Laboratory Liquid Ultra is the best TIM I have ever used for the following reasons.

1- Easy to apply and most importantly CLEANING it.

2- Gives the best thermal performance, 1-2 C below IC Diamond.

And for the cons, here is few things that come to my mind:

    1- Relatively expensive.

2- Its electrically conductive. Can actually short a circuit if a single tiny drop spilled on a circuit, Here is a true story, yesterday I was applying it on my Alienware 18, a tiny bit of it dropped on a CPU resistor. My alienware refused to post, and when I called dell technical support, they told me to send it and its most likely a mobo failure.

3- Can cause corrosion on aluminum heat sinks.

4- The tim is reflective, which gives the illusion that the paste is covering the die. Hint: a brush is usually included in the package, when you are using it to spread the tim, try to brush the paste towards the center. When it later on spreads due to heat, the center of the chip is mostly covered.

I have used IC Diamond, its one of the best performance wise. However, its super hard to clean and usually leave a die and a heat sink with scratches! I wont recommend IC diamond.

Artic Silver 5 is actually a trimmed down ver. of Cool Laboratory Ultra. Recommend it for non-overclockers.

I hope you find my post useful.

  8. I completely agree with your comment Mr Fox. In my case, "and I'm sure most users Alienware brand," we seek a team PROTRUDE THE REST brand. In my case, I always carry any search the Alienware brand, which is why we decided to buy the M17xr4. After trying it, I could not be happier, a team which surplus fulfilled my expectations. By having such a good experience so well equipped, opt for buying a Aw18, and really was disappointed by the limits to tax. Doing some research, I see that Dell is taking a path which in my opinion is not correct, Why I want a team that is in the same conditions as the rest ............... ..if other brands offer me the same and presumably cheaper mind? If they continue this way, I do not want a team of this brand, unless they return to the criteria that initially had. It is quite frustrating to pay a lot of money, "I am a worker if,and cost me quite muster the money to take surprises of this type " and get the same as the rest ....

Edit: Thank you so much MrFox! Thank you have your tutorials have gotten half rein in this 18

They are experimenting with external GPU, they failed apparently and I do believe new Alienware 18 is coming back next year.

  9. Origin does have matte screen with LCD calibration (whatever that is), and the raving reviews I've heard from friends are very good. I think the screen will be fine if I choose Origin.

But when it comes down to it, can't I just replace the screen myself if it's bad by purchasing a separate one and installing it into the laptop for cheap?

All laptop screens are replaceable. You have 30 days guarantee or something provided by origin.

I was about to Purchase an origin PC to be frank, but when I found about the panther, I quickly changed my mind. If you are looking for resell value, then aim for alienware. If you are looking for a good performance laptop that you plan to use for 3 years at max, then get an asus ROG. My asus is still working and my family is using it as a workstation despite all my experiments on it. If you plan to use a laptop for 5 years + with great value and upgradability then Clevo clones are not a bad choice at all. If you are looking for the ultimate laptop performance, get panther, period.

    - - - Updated - - -

Also, check dinoPc there are Gigabyte clones as well.

  10. It is beyond expensive, however. The one universal thing I guess I should've included is a good price. I can get max specs on an Origin 17" laptop with a bag, shipped in a box, custom case design, and a bunch of other neat features for about $6,200. I went through about five options on the Panther and chose the max stuff like I did with Origin, and it was already over $6,500. I still had about 20 settings to go through.

You can always ask for discount, you can ask directly from Eurocom youtube channel. Same implies with XoticPc and Origin.

    - - - Updated - - -

What features would I really be missing out on? Nothing really important? The screen isn't really important, since I won't be taking it outside, so matte is of no issue. I also don't need it to look pretty on the screen (Although I also would like to be able to see what I'm doing instead of a blurry mess), but what I really don't want is to be teleporting around and not being able to hit things.

The screen makes a HUGE difference, check some reviews on the screen. Some of clevo clones laptop do really have shitty screeens

  11. Hello,

I bought an Alienware with 880m sli, I had a good deal for that laptop despite all the warnings and negative feedback on 880m.

Anyways, I keep getting a low 3dmark Fire Strike 1.1 score, the score varries from 8400 to 8700! I flashed both cards with a custom vbios ( SV17 & Jhon) and got even a lower score...

I turned off cpu overclocking, hooked the laptop to an exteral monitor, and the score was still low meaning I dont have power isssues.

I used MSI Afterburn to monitor both GPU activities and in fact they managed to run constantly at 995 Mhz @ 79~82 C max temperature!

Something is wrong here and I cant figure it out. I used a different driver 337X but stills, same problems.

My single GPU test yeilds in a score of 5500, I should be getting the double of that when running both GPUs.

Thanks all and sorry for my ****ty English.

    Please advise!

  12. hey everyone, i have the i7-4980hq with gtx 980m...is it possible to OC the CPU and GPU. I am running prepar3d 2.5, and would like to OC this laptop to atleast 4.5 ghz..it turbos to 4.0...do i have any options?

You can oc gpu, I would not recommend any attempts. 1 fuck up and you throw away your mobo. Both CPU & GPU are soldered.... I wouldnt buy an Alienware computer if i were u

  13. I had Clevo and now I have Alienware.... Nothing more than Alienware and this will be my next PC as well.

Why Alienware you may ask? Because it is better configured, with professional support and beautiful.

And - you can say "I have Clevo" - no one can understand and think "you have tablet?"

But when you can say "I *am* Alienware" - everyone will be impressed and thisk, that you are "the one" :D

The most retarded comment Ive read in techinferno forums....
