  1. Hello all, Recently I figured out how to make everything work, and everything is running fine right now. At the moment I'm running a Radeon HD7870 Ice Q Turbo on a series 4 chipset Asus G50V with a PE4H 2.4 adapter (gen1) In setup 1.x I performed a x2 link (or 1xE) don't see much difference between both. The performance isn't that bad if I compare it to the link speed 2x 1.0 instead of 16x 3.0 what the card is capable of. However onboard I have an Nvidea 9700m GT which is almost performing at the same performance as my egpu. The egpu is able to handle a bit more detail in far cry 3 but not that much more.. I hear a few of you thinking, why use a gen3 card when there are only gen1 and gen 2 adapters (and series 4 chipset only supports gen1) Simple answer, I'm saving parts for a desktop and this way I can already use the graphics card. However I kind of hoped that it would perform a bit better as is does. I might try and create a x2E connection but my egpu is port 3 so I have to find a way to switch this to port 1 or so. If someone is interested in benchmarks please let me know. 3dmark 11 runs P4406 with 1xE and the same card in a i7 gaming rig without overclocking runs P7139. If I assume that the relation between these test numbers is linear the gaming rig only performs 1.6 times better but costs 3.2 times as much
  2. If a company which is selling products isn't responding, I presume that they are or criminal or without any form of decency.. Or they actually don't read their mail, which is amateurish. On topic, Can someone please tell me how I can switch on my igpu and turn off my dgpu.. I have to switch off the dgpu every single time in windows or else my external screen won't get a signal. I can turn off the dgpu in setup 1.x but without being able to turn on igpu I won't do that, because I need to be able to see and configure setup 1.x.. The igpu won't turn on because switching this on is not allowed by my bios. but if I turn off my dgpu the laptop boots with igpu ON but setup 1.x says igpu: OFF I only want my screen to pop up when booting after configuring setup 1.x..
  3. Note that a gen2 2.0 (5GB/sec) config with adapter pe4l and pe4h 3.2 only works on series 6 or older chipsets. If you have an older chipset than series 6 your chipset will only support gen1 1.0 bandwith (2GB/s) so keep an eye on that!
  4. Thank you, you are right the newest version of the PE4H v3.2 also supports gen 2 btw. I have 2.4 so in fact thats half the speed .. I know nando knows a lot but I dont want to bother to much. The info is somewhere on this forum so I should find it.. on the other hand I think if my system works great it would be good info. Because not a lot of people try ati with nvidea and have the same laptop and a gen 3 graphics card. Thanks for the help, I might reinstall windows its really neccesary (its a mess) but I dont want to re-install all my stuff haha..
  5. Yes the external audio device is plugged in usb. its a native instruments komplete audio 6. When I activate the egpu my pc seems to loose a bunch of hardware including the external audio device. Also my (usb) mouse and keyboard stop working for a second. Most of the ports turn back on but the audio remains gone. its not detected anymore. I have a PE4H which is a more stable plate to put the card on and its 16x. Not sure what gen1 and gen2 is all about. I still don't have setup 1.x so I'm only running the card at the lowest performance right now. My card is a bit overkill and I won't get everything out of it, but doing it this way I have more time to save money for a complete gaming rig. Also most standard gaming rigs don't even have that great cards. Another thing, can I free my wifi (port 2) with software to perform a 2xE optimization using port 1 2 3 4? port 4 is the mxm port of the dgpu. Also my pc is really upset, a lot of stuff is not working and some games just won't start. Hitman absolution for example just doesn't start at all.. sometimes my screen turns off and back on.. strange stuff.. (btw this forum thinks I'm a terrorist or something logs me out ever 2 milli seconds)
  6. haha ok! thats a funny fact. I got it to work this evening. Installed the nvidea drivers, put the pc in sleep, start the egpu, wake the pc up, pc searches installed ati drivers, turn of the nvidea card in windows, external screen pops up. Only bad thing is my external soundcard doesn't work anymore.. strange. And I definitely need a x2E link because I can't run farcry 3 on 1600x1200 very high dx9 with a radeon hd 7870 iceq turbo. Now to figure out how to make the laptop see the card while booting.
  7. I'm stuck after saving the .dsl file. I'm able to load the dsl in cmd but thats not the point right? and if I put iasl in front of it I get a message like: is not recognized as an internal or external assignment, program or batch file (something like that I'm dutch) Also had to ask my friend google how cmd commands work, I'm no expert lol.. Never mind I had the dsl file in the wrong directory so it wasn't loading aml.. Man I don't know who you guys are and what I just did exactly, but it worked! no error 12 anymore! You guys must be really smart and stuff, because I have a hard time wrapping my head around this. But I guess thats why I'm a mechanical engineer xD I will now enter 'the fun part' because I need amd drivers on a nvidea based laptop..
  8. Hello all, I posted a while ago (like page 46) that I was going to get a egpu set up. Today I started setting things up and my Asus G50v wasn't going to detect the HD Radeon card immediately, but detected a std vga adapter. I then installed the drivers for an HD7870 and it switched on my external screen (happy until this point) however. I rebooted the system because of the installation. And now I get the famous error 12 and my external screen won't turn on anymore. I know about the error but this is really strange.. (also catalist control centre won't start.) I don't have setup 1.x yet to turn of dgpu for more resources, but I wonder how purchasing this works? I ordered it but I didn't have to pay yet and I know nothing about delivery or will it be a downloadable image? Thanks in advance..
  9. Thank you, Its an ASUS G50V I have a ICH9 chipset which has the following free ports: Intel® ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 2940 Intel® ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 2 - 2942 Intel® ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 3 - 2944 Intel® ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 6 - 294A And I don't know which port number this is the port my gpu is attached to: Mobile Intel® 4 series Chipset PCI Express Root Port 2A41 Nvidea Geforce 9700M GT Can't find port 4 and 5 so I'm guessing one of them is the wi-fi. So Setup 1.x allows to assign two ports (or more) to the PE4H? I should just purchase and try I guess. In theory I could have a x4 connection if wifi would be on port 4 and I disable the wifi?
  10. Hello all, So I think I checked everything I need to check: Have the PE4H adapter with express card config Going to order the HIS HD7870 Ice q turbo Have a laptop have a suitable TOLUD, And have a psu to drain the house its energy supply. I'm sure this is going to work, and if not a setup 1.1x will be done HOWEVER! I'm still not sure about one thing.. and thats how to link pci-e ports 1+2 or 3+4? The description about creating a x2E connection (which I'm trying to make) says link these ports and set the setup 1.1x to 4x. ''x2E being similar but requires a port1+port2 setup, with either lane3 or lane4 or both having NO physical device attached to them. port1 is set to x4 mode, running with only the first 2 lanes. x2E also offering 15-30% faster performance than x2 alone.'' How do you link these ports? and will having NO phisical devices attached link these ports automatically? The reason why I like this connection is of course to get the most out of the HD7870. Any help would be very much appreciated! Good building fellas
