    Hey! First off congrats man!! :D 

     

    I have the same laptop and am thinking about an e-gpu setup, have you tested it out with the laptop lid closed? I use my Acer with an external screen and when the lid is closed, the performance is greatly reduced because the nvidia card automatically limits itself (tried changing power settings, nvidia control settings, to no avail). I'm figuring the performance wouldnt be hurt because the GPU would be external and not the internal card, if you could confirm this that would be great :)

  4. Info about the Razer Core

     

    From PC Gamer 

    "There are no special graphics drivers required to make the system work—you’ll just be using the normal AMD or Nvidia drivers for the GPU you place in the enclosure. The one catch is the laptop BIOS. According to Razer, the laptop BIOS will need to properly support Intel graphics switching, so the system can recognize and utilize the dedicated GPU when plugged in, and operate on the integrated GPU when unplugged. Right now, the system only works with the Blade Stealth, but once the Core is released, nothing should prevent Dell or Lenovo or Asus or anyone else from supporting the hardware, too."

     

    This seems to mean that even if a laptop has thunderbolt 3, it may not have the proper support for an external TB3 chassis. Wondering if the Acer V15 Nitro Black Edition which is I believe the cheapest thunderbolt 3 laptop (6700hq processor, 1080p screen, 8gb ram, 960m for $850 on amazon and newegg) wouldnt work with a chassis unless they updated the BIOS.

    So I'm planning on purchasing a 2013 Macbook Pro retina 13" (switched from a macbook air) and using with a AKitiO Thunder2 and Quadro k1200 eGPU. This would be used in my studio space and I'm wondering how optimus is working in windows and whether this is a reliable setup. I mostly want to make sure that Optimus would work essentially 100% of the time (os x or windows) while I'm in class. Used to use an expresscard/sonnet TB adapter setup that was 100% compatible with the internal display, but it seems that pure thunderbolt isn't always the case. If anyone has any tips with my setup and what kind of Operating system I need to get optimus working the most reliably, I'd be very grateful :)

    Alright awesome, I'll pick that up then. So long that I don't need to do any mods to the case itself and can keep everything in the box :) Using this as my design studio laptop, so for solidworks and adobe apps. Got the macbook for $450 (company I work near was liquidating) so should give me a pretty powerful little machine for less than $1000 :)

  7. Hi, so I recently got a 13' Macbook Air 2014 with thunderbolt 1 and looking into getting a chassis. I plan to use the AKiTiO TB2 case with a nVidia Quadro k1200 SFF gpu and am wondering if I need to do anything to it or if the case has enough power by itself without any modding. The card is rated at max 45w and I plan on carrying this in my backpack to bring to class so the cleaner the solution, the better.

  8. I like their idea, but why can't just make PCI-E port on the laptop and plug a graphics on it? like a docking station, but PCI-E as connector

    So if you have your laptop hooked up with that giant eGPU, and then may be connect a 4K monitor, then what's the main difference from desktop?

    I was going to work on eGPU project, but I quit just because I found its much cheaper to build a small desktop and buy a cheap laptop.

    The whole idea is having one system instead of two separate computers. You would leave your e-gpu enclosure and monitor at home, bringing your laptop to work, school, etc. When you arrived home, you plug it in and your thing laptop all of a sudden turns into a graphics powerhouse.

    The price still needs to come down for this to make sense, but it is slowly getting there

  9. Alright sweet, so essentially my gaming wont see a hit and it'll remain as it is, but a 670 should be plenty for other work and the 4k resolution will be used then. I'll probably be picking one up before I go to college so it might be a few months, but I'll do my tests once it's going.

  10. Just a quick warning about the latest OS-X upgrade:

    I automatically downloaded and installed 10.9.3 from Apple and... no more eGPU.

    I fiddled with it for a while (not being that tech savvy) and gave up.

    I ended up restoring from a Time Machine backup, thereby stepping back to 10.9.2.

    As an aside, I clicked on "details" and noticed that 10.9.3 apparently includes changes intended to accommodate 4G monitors. I assume those changes are getting in the way of the quick kext fix for which we were all so grateful.

    I look forward to hearing from our resident wizards as to how to make everything work with 10.9.3.

    I believe the way to get it working again is to re-apply the kext edits from the files (posted on the first page). After every os x upgrade, the files reset themselves. Im wondering if someone can write a program to auto edit the kexts :))

    I was wondering if anyone has gotten their e-gpu setup to work with a 4k monitor. I'm thinking of buying a 28inch samsung 4k monitor for college (60hz aswell). For gaming, I wouldn't be playing native 4k (downscale to 1080p which after reading about it, looks exactly the same as a regular 1080p 28inch monitor because its 1/4 the pixels). I'd mostly use the extra screen real-estate for for windows, easier photoshopping and video-editing, and overall crispiness while browsing websites. How well would a 2670qm cpu, MSI 670 2gb gpu, and Opt. 1.2 handle the 4k monitor? I'm wondering if games still played at 1080p would offer me the same performance, or if the 500MB of bandwidth just isn't enough. I'm sure this is something thunderbolt would be a big benefit for. Any thoughts would be great!

  12. Interesting find on my end. So in windows 7 and windows 8, before my computer would crash the game would get extremely choppy (drop from around 60 fps to 10) for a few seconds then restart. After playing a while the other day, mid-game my framerate dropped to around 10 and I was ready for the restart, but after a couple of seconds it reverted back to normal and I was fine for the rest of the time. Still not sure, but it does seem like this is a software issue and windows 8.1 may have fixed it.

  13. Ah crap well thats no fun to hear, I have a MSI 670 as well and after a couple hours of gameplay it'll quit on me (or if I just have my computer on for a while). Though my computer restarts itself. Did this in windows 8, just upgraded to 8.1 so ill see if it does the same.3
