    Hi everybody!

I'm working on a new adapter now! Now it's Plug-n-play and won't need a modified BIOS.

Does this means the new version of adaptor allows ubuntu system to detect both 755m and egpu without any bios mod too?

  2. Just to reconfirm, I simply need a basic model to use eGPU on my laptop, any extra sata/thunderbolt support is good but not mandatory for me. Currently I have 2 plans: Move my GTX 1080 TI from desktop to laptop, or buy a new GTX 1650 which claims  to run without power supply on any old PC. As long as the new adaptor can fulfill either one plan and can run stable, then it is ok for me. (though the GTX 1650 looks really interesting as a portable laptop upgrade)

I am also interested in this project.

It seems there is also a SATA connector in the ultrabay aside from the PCIe.  Is there anyway we can add a SATA connection or better, Fit a 2.5" HDD self-made enclosure in the empty space?

Do you plan on adding the hardware mod  too?

If I had the actual PCB file(altium or eagle file) I can add a atmega328 to it so we had the hardware mod built into the PCB.

This can be a good implementation too, I can imagine plugging in egpu on the top of egpu dock (option 1 from swung huang) while another 2.5'' sata drive at side or bottom of the dock. GTX 1650 may be a good option specifically on Y510p as we dont have to add one more psu to it (TDP 75W), saving more bucks and space on the dock.

AND..... There is only 5 more weeks before swung huang is free!!!! Yeah~~~

  4. @Swung Huang, for the second option do you offer multiple sizes/choices of acrylic case where the daughter board is located? Eg. Flex ATX PSU + mini ITX GPU,  SFX PSU + mid length GPU (270mm) or for full length GPU (300mm) etc? Your sample images in page 47 is only suitable for mini ITX GPU. Any price estimation?

  5. Guys, which option do you all prefer?

    1. i7-4700MQ ([email protected]) + GTX 1080TI via eGPU adaptor or

    2. Ryzen 3 2200G ([email protected]) + GTX 1080TI

My laptop y510p at idle is already 50+ degree celcius, if the majority of you guys managed to run things cool after CPU OC while using an eGPU adaptor, then it will be a strong encouragement for me to go with the eGPU adaptor (Hopefully shipping fees is not heavy for my country).

Having the cable replaced and got a new design on laptop side.

    Now running @ PCIe 3.0 x8 stable.

(Will get these things for sale, but not now.

This is the best news and update for me in 2019, a lot thumbs up for this !!!

I think @Gerald talk something about it. I guess eGPU can't get power from Ultrabay (~75W via PCIe slot) and laptop board can't provide such power. SO, ePSU power eGPU from both sides: PCIe slot on adapter and PCIe power connectors.

P.S. I have no information how much power got second GeForce GT 650M via Ultrabay.

Sorry, to make it clear I mean plug in the cables from ePSU to eGPU directly without power pin adaptor. This is because I am planning to use GTX 1080 TI and it needs 8+6 pins, those sample in previous pages only has 8 pins.

Hello, since you are new member i can't send you either pm,  https://ufile.io/z1yg5, the shematics from gerald, also note that you will need ultrabay adapters, (in my case i had ordered them but unfotunatelly the coustoms asked for extra 100euros i am from greecce, so i rejected the package, i had ordered 7 pieces , and thus i abandoned the project, however you're from states as i see so you wont have coustoms. If someone will create those adapters will gladly buy for me). Also you'll need the power pin adapter for power supply, and some transistors, resistors, capacitors, all these can be found if you google the product codes from the schematics, so i wish you good luck.

Why power pin adaptor is needed? Can we just simply connect the power cable from PSU to eGPU?

  9. The only option now is wait for those who are working on their own trial adaptor to successfully fabricate one, then mass pro for sale. Too many uncertainty, hopefully someone succeed in manufacturing, cant wait to buy one to upgrade my 5 year old laptop.

  10. Thanks and good luck to all ultrabay-pcie adaptor makers. Meanwhile waiting for new batch of adaptors or tutorial of how to do so, I just ordered a SilverStone 500W SFX-L PSU and a Cougar QBX m-itx case to be my eGPU enclosure as I dont have the skills to make myself one. Ryzen 3000 chips are coming next month along with AMD new Navi GPUs, guess it is a good time to buy an AMD GPU with same performance as RTX cards at half of the prices as our egpu, if the leaks are real.

  11. @Zakyn If you have plans to fabricate a few more to sell, i think we can nego on the price later.

Good luck on your project too.

Edit: Or maybe you can share a full tutorial on how to fabricate the adaptor ourselves, given that we get the ultrabay connector from the link above.

ok so here is my best result i got about pricing of pci-e x8 ultrabay connector, i contacted alibaba, taobao but they are expensive, here is the best i got here 4.4euros/piece they told me that shipping to europe is doable with shipping cost 18-49$ depending the method. In my opinion it's cheap, i would built myself the adapter but with limited knowledge and experience its very hard, for that i am waiting for the next badge, thanks.

    This ^^

For those skilled enough to manufacture some adaptors, manolis had posted a link for the neccessary component up there. Hopefully we will see the next batch of adaptor soon, even better with a design like Swung Huang, his version is really cool.

  13. I wonder is it possible for me to buy one adaptor before year 2019, or how long I need to wait for the next batch of adaptors...

For the time being, is there anyone who can access to the limited materials, and willing to manufacture a few copies of the adaptor to sell on ebay?

  14. @Swung Huang  @Celestus

TY for replying, some silly questions here too:

    1. Does we have to remove the wifi part etc and use an usb wifi etc to use this adaptor? Just read this somewhere from the internet.

    2. Does the laptop gets powered up by the gpu power supply or we have to use 2 power supply with eGPU setup?

I will probably buy a RTX 2070 to run some deep learning training on GPU once I got the adaptor. The performance of GT 755M is really bad on training data, 50x slower than my classmate's laptop (GTX 1070 TI). Just ran an user benchtest and this is my result on Lenovo Y510P.

    UserBenchmarks: Game 20%, Desk 46%, Work 33%
    CPU: Intel Core i7-4700MQ - 67%
    GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 755M - 12.5%
    HDD: Seagate Momentus 2.5" 1TB - 49.5%
    RAM: Samsung M471B1G73QH0-YK0 1x8GB - 30.9%
    MBD: Lenovo 20217

12.5% for GPU, nearly all PC beats me lol...

To free up the slot which Gerald's adapter plugs into you would, indeed, need to remove the DVD drive, should you have one in your Y510p.

In addition to the adapter itself, you will also need a PSU able to provide your graphics card with sufficient power and, of course, the graphics card itself.

TY for reply, so the current bottleneck of this project is the lack of components to build the adaptor I see... Hopefully some pro guys can still get some to make it for sale, or else rebuilding a new Desktop with good GPU will be too costly.

And I read from the previous page, if I understand it correctly nvdia cards above GTX 1070 (GTX 1070 TI, 1080, 1080 TI, RTX 2070, 2080,2080 TI) has the same performance as 1070 because of CPU bottleneck?

  16. Hi all, I am a new student in AI field with limited EE and computer knowledge. Sorry if my question looks silly, does we simply have to open the computer case, remove the dvd drive (unscrew?) and then plug in this gerald adaptor to complete the hardware installation? Is there someone here who still has a way to buy neccessary component, willing to build a couple adaptors for sale? How much does this adaptor cost? Btw the design of the board + acrylic above is really nice. If someone can manufacture one like the above, i will 100% buy it, if the price isn't too high for me. XD
