Did they alter their physics calculation algorithm or is this a case of bloat? I'd be curious to see what Futuremark says about this.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE:
Ubisoft in celebrating their 30 years of making video games is giving away a new item everyday until December 23rd. Thanks to some sleuths on Reddit, we now know what they will be giving away each day. You can grab these items by having a registered Ubisoft account (we recommend uPlay) and grabbing the items from there. Today (12/7/16) they're giving away Assassins Creed 3 for the PC. After that it is mainly just wallpapers and miscellaneous items until December 15-18 when they give away some nice games including The Crew, Prince of Persia, Rayman Legends and Splinter Cell.

So I currently am using a GDC beast 8.0 with a 220W dell power supply.
My GPU is the GTX 750 ti which does not require its own power.
In 2weeks time I want to upgrade my GPU to the GTX 1060 6gb version. I have 2 questions regarding this.First, how would i power the new card, do i need to use a ATX power supply or can i just connect a pin from the GDC beast to the new GPU. Will the DELL 220W supply be enough for the card?
Second, my CPU is OLD. It is the first gen i5 540m for the 8440p. It only supports gen 1 port, atleast that is what @****** told me. Can i use a brand new card such as the 1060 on this CPU without issues with the EGPU? If you need any more information please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks for reading.

So with AMD's 8 core Zen processor supposedly being released in January 2017, do you think it will keep up with Intel's latest offerings? And what is the max you'd be willing to pay for it? I've read indications it may be priced around $300 and be competitive with Intel Broadwell-E processors so if that is the case, it may be time for AMD to shine again.

Today Nintendo announced it's brand new gaming system dubbed the Switch which will go on sale March 2017. The Switch features a tablet sized screen with detachable controllers called Joy-Cons allowing it to be docked to a unit at home to serve as a traditional console or have the controllers attach to the side of the screen giving gamers the ability to take the system with them on the go.
(image: Polygon)
In addition, the Switch will utilize mini cartridges as a medium for its games although it remains to be seen whether it will have built in storage to accommodate downloadable games and/or content. There are no details yet about online gaming although given the fact that it's 2016 and the emphasis in the trailer (see below) is on social gaming, it would be a huge oversight not to include it.
(image: Polygon)
Unlike Nintendo's previous Wii U console which saw poor partner support, Nintendo today announced a fairly healthy list of developers for their new console which include EA, Activision, Bethesda, Capcom, Sega, Ubisoft, Square Enix, From Software, Warner Brothers, Codemasters and Atlus.
Finally, it was rumored that NVIDIA would be behind the Switch and today it was confirmed that they are indeed the ones that engineered the Switch in conjunction with Nintendo - the full press release by NVIDIA is available at the end of this article.
The Nintendo Switch in action:
NVIDIA press release regarding Nintendo Switch:
QuoteA Console Architecture for the Living Room and Beyond
Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.
The Nintendo Switch’s gaming experience is also supported by fully custom software, including a revamped physics engine, new libraries, advanced game tools and libraries. NVIDIA additionally created new gaming APIs to fully harness this performance. The newest API, NVN, was built specifically to bring lightweight, fast gaming to the masses.
Gameplay is further enhanced by hardware-accelerated video playback and custom software for audio effects and rendering.
We’ve optimized the full suite of hardware and software for gaming and mobile use cases. This includes custom operating system integration with the GPU to increase both performance and efficiency.
NVIDIA gaming technology is integrated into all aspects of the new Nintendo Switch home gaming system, which promises to deliver a great experience to gamers.
The Nintendo Switch will be available in March 2017. More information is available athttps://www.nintendo.com/switch.
Nintendo Switch is a trademark of Nintendo.

well according to my 7970m your wrong and the 7970m of @Khenglish was even better, it outran the 680m whilste beeing 200€ cheaper. it ran pretty hot but that was all.bang 4 the buck whise it was a great card.
ever since then there was nothing new from amd^^ so hello 980m
The 7970m suffered from some pretty bad frame stuttering as a result of it's poor frametimes. I documented this back 4 years ago when it was released for the M18x.

You have to wait a week.

I need to change my name over on this board...I made this in 2011 when I was figuring out 6990M undervolting. This is Raidriar over from NBR
I was going to run RX 480s in all my systems on a matter of not supporting Nvidia's ridiculous consumer atrocities for the past few years. Now it seems the only answer is the 980M in legacy platforms. On a separate note, I find it slightly amusing how the GTX 980M is the final card for these LVDS systems, kinda how the 9800M GTX (similar names) was the final card for MXM 2.1/HE users before MXM 3.0B was introduced.
Send me a request for name change via PM.

No seriously, enjoy the card, even though it doesnt make sense from a financial point of view. Many people would be jealous. At least you can run everything for the next 5 years, so on a yearly basis it is quite cheap?
I'm loving it, it was a good decision for me since i game at 1440p and the 1080 wasn't cutting it. If you're in a similar situation, I'd sell the 1080. I sell all my video cards on hardocp.com forums.

Unfortunately newer engines like UE4 and Unity lack SLI support and given how lazy most developers are, SLI is showing decreased support in newer dx 11 titles as well. In many of those new games, forcing SLI does nothing for scaling. Keep in mind gpu usage and scaling are two very different things and the evidence so far shows little to no benefit with SLI these days in newer titles, especially if you go beyond two GPUs.
And as as I said, dx 12 all but ensures SLI and crossfire are dead. As octiceps pointed out, this is compounded by the fact that AMD silicon dominates consoles and only a tiny handful of games today are PC first and those that are normally don't need more than a single gpu for max settings.
Even nvidia is scaling back SLI support so that should be a wake up call that it is dying out. It's okay (for now) if you chase numbers but most people buy these systems for gaming and with that fact in mind, it's better to skip SLI and get the single most powerful GPU. You get much lower frametimes and 100% scaling with no microstutter.
If I was in the market for a new pascal notebook and an avid gamer, I'd save money and pass on the dual gpu and instead put that money into a bigger and better ssd.
-
Something that future owners of these SLI notebooks should keep in mind is that it is a complete fail so far in dx 12 with virtually no titles supporting it or crossfire since that duty now falls to developers. You will still do fine in most dx 11 titles but with dx 12 taking over, don't get your hopes up about mgpu and SLI support. If you're a benchmark chaser, well carry on
As a regular gamer, I ended up with a single desktop Titan X Pascal for that very reason. It's the first time I skipped SLI in years as its future for now seems questionable outside synthetic benchmark software.
Something worth reading: http://www.babeltechreviews.com/sad-state-crossfire-sli-today/3/
QuoteConclusion:
We are not sure that we can recommend either SLI or CrossFire based on our testing with 25 modern games. And it will be very hard to recommend the next dual GPU Polaris video card for $500 to take on a single GTX 1080 or GTX 1070 based on what we see today. If you play mostly older games, CrossFire and SLI both scale decently, however, many older games do not need the extra performance that multi-GPU scaling provides.
We noted that 8 out of 25 games from Nvidia, and 9 out of 25 games from AMD – about one-third of the games in our benchmark suite, and making up mostly the latest games – either scaled poorly or negatively compared with using a single GPU.

Yesterday after downloading Setup 1.30 I wanted to download the installation instructions, but somehow my download button disappeared :-( I was hoping that it would be fixed by now because maybe some flag was stuck at my account. Now I'm stuck at doing nothing because I have no clue what to do.
Wanted to try the experimental UEFI setup, because my Macbook Pro Retina 2015 is unable to install/load MBR legacy boot.
Open a support ticket and we'll get it resolved.

I wouldn't count on much discounts for Pascal based cards but you might see them for Maxwell. As for the $380 price of the 1070, we may get there at some point but not anytime soon. I think $400ish is the best you will get for now. Besides anything at $380 would have such atrocious cooling that you wouldn't want it regardless.

I never keep cards longer than 18 months soo...

You know, I really hate myself, I do. I swore to myself this time, "don't fall for NVIDIAs shit, you can resist the temptation of Titan X". So I held out, bought a 1080 thinking "ok I got this!". What helped even more was it was constantly out of stock on their website. So tonight I just check it for shits and giggles and what do you know, it's in stock. My finger starts twitching and I'm thinking, "oh fuck no you aren't!" and the next thing I know, I'm at the checkout process w/next day shipping. God damn you NVIDIA! I know in a few months I'll look back on this post and think, "damn I'm an idiot" but what the hell.
Update a day later (today):
It arrived this afternoon and it's definitely an impressive card. My biggest gripe is I have to set the fan to 90% when its boosting to 2 ghz in order to keep it from going above 80c. Since I game with headphones on, that's not a big deal for me. In overwatch with the gtx 1080 @ 2.05 ghz and 1440p max settings I wasn't able to get above 90-95 fps. This card stays in the 130-144 fps range which is perfect for my display.

It could be interesting to know those metrics just for shits and giggles, but I doubt it would change anything regardless of their responses. I think it's probably safe to say people that own machines like these do so because they want to. They value them for what they are and there is no need for further explanation. They want what they want. Period. End of discussion. Freedom of choice is a beautiful thing. Taking whatever slop gets slinged your way as a compromise is a sad situation for anyone to find themselves.
For me it was excessive business travel that originally created the need. I no longer have that as a compelling basis for my need because my travel is infrequent. But, my choice is still the same. I value the mobility whether that means 10 feet or 10 hours away from my desk. After spending a 12 hour day at my desk, I don't have any desire to spend my off-work time in the same place. But, I also don't want to use a turdbook. I don't place any value on something on the basis of it being adequate. Part of my pleasure is derived from the glory of excess. It's really no different than a passion for gun collections, collecting butterflies or stamps, owning monster trucks, muscle cars, street rods, motorcycles, bicycle riding, camping and other things that allow people to enjoy life to its fullest. Try to take those things away from the people that love them and you'll have a raging blood bath on your hands. They don't care about the logic and will tell us to stuff it up our ass if we ask them for a business case to justify their basis for being able to continue to enjoy those things.
Ideally it would be nice if garbage hardware didn't exist but it does. With the market deviating away from discrete solutions to more integrated ones, I think it's inevitable we'll eventually see large and heavy notebooks disappear. In fact, I think the next thing on the chopping block are socketed CPUs for desktops as we'll probably start seeing Intel + motherboard manufacturers colluding to create soldered shit that is sold in expensive price tiers. Hopefully AMD at least gets it act together with Zen on the desktop side and starts giving Intel some pushback. It would also be nice if by some miracle AMD started pushing MXM again and introduced RX480 and above to compete against NVIDIA, at least one can dream but I'm highly skeptical.
